IsoFresh: A global stable isotope database of freshwater food webs

    No full text
International audienceEcologists seek to understand the ways that human activities are altering the structures and processes that support biodiversity and nature's contributions to people. Food web research at the interface of community and ecosystem ecology is promising in this regard. An industry of studies has utilized stable isotopes in recent decades to rapidly characterize energy and material transfer among organisms in freshwater food webs. Nevertheless, these efforts have been somewhat siloed and mainly locally-based, and lack of a centralized database has limited efforts to tackle questions about food web change using isotopes at a global scale. Here we present IsoFresh, a freshwater food web database that contains species-level carbon (δ 13 C) and nitrogen (δ 15 N) stable isotope values for 15343 organisms, representing 1001 food webs and including > 1600 fish species and associated potential prey, from 65 countries around the globe. Our hope is that IsoFresh is used to explore fundamental and applied food web questions, contributing new knowledge about global environmental change so that human societies can better conserve and manage freshwater ecosystems along desirable future trajectories

Co-occurrence patterns of introduced terrestrial flatworms in metropolitan France revealed by citizen science

    No full text
International audienceTerrestrial flatworms are a group of successful carnivorous invaders that have been introduced to many regions outside their native range. In France, six different species have been recorded in significant numbers over the past 20 years, with a recent increase in observations. These include predators of earthworms, gastropods and soil arthropods. Their presence raises concerns about their potential to disturb communities of soil-dwelling organisms. Here, we aimed to describe patterns of co-occurrence between these species in France, using a national inventory of alien flatworms coupled with estimates of potential co-occurrence derived from ecological niche models trained at the global scale. We showed that, although alien predatory flatworms are relatively widespread in France, they co-occur less frequently than expected simply based on each species’ respective environmental suitability, i.e., they tend to be found alone and not in association with other alien flatworm species. However, ecological niche models indicate a high potential for more frequent co-occurrences in the future. We hypothesize that their limited dispersal ability and their relatively recent introduction has confined most species close to their introduction sites. However, if they eventually fill out their potential range, predators of different taxonomic groups will co-occur more frequently, leading to greater predation pressure in invaded ecosystems. Our conclusions shed light on the current and future co-occurrence patterns of alien predatory flatworms in France. Understanding how they translate in the field in terms of predation and competitive interactions will be crucial for predicting the impact of flatworm invasion on soil ecosystems

    No full text

Cryptic Diversity and Genetic Differentiation of Mesophotic Hydroids in the Southwestern Indian Ocean

    No full text
International audienceThe western Indian Ocean (WIO) is recognized as a marine biodiversity hotspot with complex oceanographic circulation resulting in limited connectivity between remote islands. This ocean region comprises several subregions of varying biodiversity, with the northern Mozambique Channel standing out as the core of this hotspot. Although the hydroids in this region are known to include cryptic species and show contrasting connectivity patterns, the mesophotic depths remain largely unexplored. The Deep Reef Refuge Hypothesis suggests that mesophotic coral ecosystems may act as refuges. However, this hypothesis is based on several prerequisites that could be affected by the presence of cryptic species. We investigated the genetic diversity and connectivity of seven hydroid species by collecting samples at euphotic and mesophotic depths around the islands of Mayotte and Reunion. Population genetic patterns were investigated using multivariate analyses and Bayesian clustering, with 8-18 microsatellite markers per species. The results revealed greater genetic diversity in Mayotte than in Reunion, even though fewer samples were collected there. This is in line with the location of the heart of the hotspot in the northern part of the WIO. In addition, all species exhibited strong genetic differentiation between samples from the two islands, supporting the "one island, one species" hypothesis previously proposed for hydroids in the region. However, contrasting values were obtained among depths depending on the species and the island, demonstrating the importance of a multi-species approach. The inclusion of mesophotic samples from the Taxella eximia/gracilicaulis and Macrorhynchia phoenicea species complexes provides new insights into the true biodiversity of these genera, revealing additional cryptic species and putative hybridization. Furthermore, the genetic connectivity estimation performed here among depths highlights several species that could be evaluated in terms of the vertical connectivity prerequisite of the Deep Reef Refuge Hypothesis in Mayotte and Reunion

Development of SNP markers for monitoring the genetic diversity and hybridization between the introduced Ruddy Duck and the native White-headed Duck in Europe

    No full text
International audienceSince its introduction to Europe in the mid-20th century, the hybridization of the ruddy duck (Oxyura jamaicensis) with its native relative, the white-headed duck (Oxyura leucocephala), has been one of the main concerns for the conservation of the latter. Following the detection of several hybridization events at the northern edge of the white-headed duck’s range, the presence of the ruddy duck in the Western Palearctic has been recognized as the primary threat to the long-term survival of the species. Therefore, monitoring the extent of hybridization between the two species is of great importance. Here, we describe 548 new SNP markers, including 292 SNPs to study genetic diversity within the ruddy duck and 161 SNPs to detect hybridization events. These markers were tested on a dataset of 198 samples collected in France and identified as ruddy ducks, and enabled the detection of one hybrid. These new markers also include 95 SNPs to study the genetic diversity within the white-headed duck, which should be validated on a higher number of samples

    No full text

In 2001, deer were detected infected with M. bovis in the Brotonne and Mauny forests in Normandy. Bovine tuberculosis has also been detected in the wild boar population and in neighbouring cattle farms. The first measures in wildlife were initially aimed at reducing deer and wild boar populations and setting up/strengthening various biosecurity measures. But the results of the surveillance program led to the choice in 2005-2006 of an eradication of the deer population (main maintenance host of infection). Between 2006 and 2022, the sentinel role of wild boars was used for monitoring the circulation of M. bovis in these forest areas. A significant decrease in the apparent proportion of infected was thus observed, with however the existence of low-level infection circulation. Different hypotheses have been formulated to explain this persistence. Since 2019, a reduction in wildlife surveillance has been proposed as part of the national monitoring group for the Sylvatub program. In 2025, the assessment of the last years of surveillance made it possible to state that the infection was now under control and probably eradicated from this area, allowing the lifting of the decree declaring infection in wildlife, almost 25 years after the discovery of the first cases of infection in wildlife.
