The Issues of Micro‐Nanoplastics in the Oyster and Mussel Aquaculture Sector
International audienceABSTRACT Over 90% of plastic debris in marine environments consists of microplastics smaller than 5 mm. This is a growing global concern, especially given the emerging but largely unquantified presence of nanoplastics. This review synthesizes current knowledge on micro‐ and nanoplastic contamination in coastal areas and its effects on bivalve species, particularly oysters and mussels, whether in aquaculture or the wild. Drawing on 316 references, notably case studies of (micro)plastic waste contamination of surface waters, sediments, and animals in coastal areas, and experimental data on ingestion, fate, and impacts of micro‐nanoplastics on organisms. Microplastic levels range from a few particles per cubic meter of seawater (> 300 μm) to several hundred per kilogram of sediment. Between 60% and 93% of oysters and mussels are contaminated, with concentrations ranging from 0.2 to 2.9 particles per gram of tissue; over 80% of these particles are smaller than 50 μm. After ingestion, most microplastics are excreted, but smaller nanoplastics (< 100 nm) can cross biological membranes and reach internal organs. Even transient exposure in the digestive tract can impair energy uptake, immune function, and reproduction. Plastic additives can also cause endocrine‐like disruptions. Reducing plastic pollution in coastal environments requires coordinated action. Effective actions should include integrated and enforceable strategies, including international regulations on plastic additives, improved waste management, and the promotion of safer alternative materials

Impact of chlordecone pollution on biodiversity: The blind spot of 15 years of public policy in the French West Indies
International audienceFor many years, there has been an unprecedented decline in biodiversity on a global scale, triggered largely by the use of plant protection products. In this context, a collective scientific assessment was conducted to identify current consensus knowledge and further needs regarding the impacts of plant protection products on biodiversity and ecosystem services in France, including its overseas territories. A particular focus was placed on chlordecone, a highly persistent organochlorine insecticide used extensively in the French West Indies (FWI) for more than 20 years (1972-1993) to control the banana root borer, but also in Eastern Europe, the USA, South America and Africa for various uses. The FWI support biodiversity hotspots, with many endemic and endangered species, and include marine and terrestrial protected areas. Such an environmental context is therefore highly relevant for studying the links between chlordecone contamination and potential effects on biodiversity. Thus, the objective of this work was to review the contamination of the FWI environment by chlordecone, its transfer through ecosystems, and its effects on biodiversity and ecosystem services. Literature analysis emphasized valuable knowledge of chlordecone ecodynamics in terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecosystems. A wide diversity of terrestrial and aquatic organisms is chronically exposed to chlordecone. However, despite 15 years of public policy dedicated to developing knowledge on chlordecone’s fate and impacts, the knowledge gap remains critical regarding its effects on biodiversity and on ecosystem services. As the local environment is often contaminated for tens or even hundreds of years, future research is needed to characterize the effects of legacy pollution by chlordecone and its transformation products on organisms and ecosystems
International audienceIn 1997, Christophe Sautière used a light trap to study several insect families in and around the Guadeloupe National Park. At nine sites, Sphingidae (Lepidoptera) and Scarabaeidae (Coleoptera) were surveyed, with precise abundance quantification. In 2021-2022, 25 years later, the survey was repeated at the same locations, to assess any changes that had occurred during this period. Abundance, diversity and community composition were compared between the two periods. For Scarabaeidae, no significant differences are found. For Sphingidae, mean abundance per night is significantly lower in 2021-2022, with a loss of 85% in abundance (Cohen effect size d = - 0.74). Overall diversity across all nine sites and composition did not change significantly. The limitations of this study are discussed, the low number of repetitions of light trapping, the absence of intermediate monitoring and the difference in power of the lamps used between the two periods, 25 years apart.

Assessing the effectiveness of no-take zones on fish populations in the Marine Natural Park of Cap Corse and Agriate, Northwestern Mediterranean Sea
International audienceNo-take zones (NTZs) are expected to rebuild exploited fish populations, yet their performance is rarely assessed with species-level indicators. We quantified the reserve effect of the Nonza–San Fiurenzu NTZ (24.2 km 2 ) inside the Marine Natural Park of Cap Corse and Agriate (north-western Mediterranean) and simultaneously compared the effectiveness of two underwater visual census (UVC). Using 488 underwater visual-census transects (2018–2022) we monitored densities, size structure and biomass of three emblematic predators—the common dentex Dentex dentex , dusky grouper Epinephelus marginatus and brown meagre Sciaena umbra —and compared trends with neighbouring fished sectors. Gaussian GLMs related log-transformed density and biomass to protection status, season, year, sea-surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll- a . Protection was the dominant predictor for E. marginatus and S. umbra : mean densities inside the NTZ were 3–4 times higher than outside, and biomass was enriched by factors of six and four, respectively. For the mobile D. dentex densities did not differ, but biomass was greater in the NTZ, indicating size-selective benefits. SST showed a negative effect on D. dentex and S. umbra ; chlorophyll- a had no detectable influence. Cross-transect surveys (two divers) yielded density estimates comparable to—or higher than—the logistically intensive comb protocol (four to eight divers), suggesting that simpler designs can suffice for long-term monitoring. Our results demonstrate that a well-enforced NTZ embedded in a moderately protected park can rapidly enhance biomass and restore size structure of vulnerable Mediterranean predators
