    Community dynamics and knowledge production: forty years of research in quantum computing

    International audiencePurpose This study aims to explore the interplay between community dynamics and knowledge production using the quantum computing research field as a case study. Quantum computing holds the promise of dramatically increasing computation speed and solving problems that are currently unsolvable in a short space of time. In this highly dynamic area of innovation, computer companies, research laboratories and governments are racing to develop the field. Design/methodology/approach After constructing temporal co-authorship networks, the authors identify seven different events affecting communities of researchers, which they label: forming, growing, splitting, shrinking, continuing, merging, dissolving. The authors then extract keywords from the titles and abstracts of their contributions to characterize the dynamics of knowledge production and examine the relationship between community events and knowledge production over time. Findings The findings show that forming and splitting are associated with retaining in memory what is currently known, merging and growing with the creation of new knowledge and splitting, shrinking and dissolving with the curation of knowledge. Originality/value Although the link between communities and knowledge has long been established, much less is known about the relationship between the dynamics of communities and their link with collective cognitive processes. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the present contribution is one of the first to shed light on this dynamic aspect of community knowledge production

    Collaborative robots in manufacturing and assembly systems: literature review and future research agenda

    International audienceNowadays, considering the constant changes in customers’ demands, manufacturing systems tend to move more and more towards customization while ensuring the expected reactivity. In addition, more attention is given to the human factors to, on the one hand, create opportunities for improving the work conditions such as safety and, on the other hand, reduce the risks brought by new technologies such as job cannibalization. Meanwhile, Industry 4.0 offers new ways to facilitate this change by enhancing human–machine interactions using Collaborative Robots (Cobots). Recent research studies have shown that cobots may bring numerous advantages to manufacturing systems, especially by improving their flexibility. This research investigates the impacts of the integration of cobots in the context of assembly and disassembly lines. For this purpose, a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) is performed. The existing contributions are classified on the basis of the subject of study, methodology, methodology, performance criteria, and type of Human-Cobot collaboration. Managerial insights are provided, and research perspectives are discussed

Scenario-based methods use real-life situations to collect data or measure context-sensitive constructs. This study includes the development of a scenario and five behavioral answers using a five-step process and rigorous data collection. Based on multiple interviews and a final sample of decision-makers from 149 French small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the measurement tool's internal and external validity meets the criteria of scale development. The tool enables the study of internationalization decision-making from new perspectives-for instance, through more rigorous contextual research or exploration of sensitive topics such as cognitive factors, motives, and behaviors in international business research.</div

    Toward an Evolutionary Theory of Shadow Options: Emergent Functions of Corning’s Glass-Based Innovations

    International audienceBy integrating Herbert Simon’s theory of artifact and Brian Arthur’s concept of functionality in technology, we propose a novel conceptual framework for analyzing the process by which shadow options embedded in a firm’s existing technologies emerge and are converted into real options. We apply this framework to examine the shadow options of Corning’s photosensitive glass technologies. The core of our model is that technologies subsume options, most of which are shadow because they refer to functions of those resources that were unknown when they were originally acquired or created. Shadow options are hidden in functionalities. Functionalities and functions are relational entities that exist at the interface between an artifact’s inner and outer environments. The transfor-mation of shadow into real options occurs along a continuum, with two distinct types represented at its extremes: the Schumpeterian and Kirznerian types. We examine organi-zational attributes that enable Schumpeterian and Kirznerian shadow options and explain how firms can systematically pursue an innovation strategy that exploits the shadow options embedded in their technologie

The chosen approach is based on the principles of “Physics of Decision”, which considers the performance of a system as a physical trajectory within the boundaries of its performance indicators that might be deviated through variation of system parameters. According to the overall premise of employing the state-space method to simulate physical systems, this work presents a decision aggregation method in dynamic systems. The core contribution is to propose a multi-criteria performance framework to manage multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) system performance with a combination of affordable decisions.     Simultaneous Pickup-and-Delivery Production-Routing Problem in closed-loop supply chain with remanufacturing and disassembly consideration

    International audienceIn a context of Closed-Loop Supply Chain, Production-Routing Problem with Pickup and Delivery is presented. In its basic form, Production-Routing Problem (PRP) attempts to solve jointly Dynamical Lot-Sizing and Inventory-Routing Problems. In this paper, a novel PRP model seeking to minimize the total cost of manufacturing, remanufacturing, disassembly, inventory, and routing by taking into account the remanufacturing and disassembly processes of End-of-Life returned products is provided. Novel hybrid heuristics based on Two-Phase Iterative and Relax-and-Fix heuristics were developed and outperform Branch-and-Cut algorithm for large size instances with a small vehicle capacity. Main insights derived from sensitivity analyses are (i) managers can use the model to trade off the cost saving resulting from the integration of forward and reverse flows, on the one hand, and any additional cost incurred by the organizational changes related to the integration, on the other hand, (ii) a high level of remanufacturing rate for returned products is not necessarily profitable, and managers should develop a return policy that leads to the appropriate level of remanufacturing rate, and (iii) investing in expanding the remanufacturing or the disassembly capacities can significantly reduce the total cost until a threshold level, beyond which any further investment is not beneficial
