Optimal pricing strategy of an on-demand platform with cross-regional passengers

    No full text
International audienceRecent years have witnessed the emergence and prosperity of online ride-hailing, which empowers the traditional taxi industry with information technology. However, the ride-hailing platform has no direct control over drivers, one of the biggest challenges for the platform is how to balance the supply and the demand. Considering the cross-regional demand and the surge demand, this paper focuses on the pricing strategy of the ride-hailing platform, and further introduces strategies such as bonus incentive and information sharing. We find that when facing demand surging and supply shortage in one region, the platform can adopt surge pricing or bonus incentive in the adjacent region before the demand surges to balance the supply and the demand. Specially, the surge pricing strategy benefits the platform when the surge demand is high or the cross-regional demand is low, but the bonus incentive strategy has the opposite effect. The existence of cross-regional demand improves the performance of the bonus incentive strategy but reduces that of the surge pricing strategy. We further show that the platform prefers bonus incentive to surge pricing when only a small number of drivers are required to move. But bonus incentive always improves social welfare better than surge pricing. Extending to information asymmetry, information sharing can also encourage more drivers to move. However, the effect is limited such that the proportion of drivers who move will not exceed a threshold. The platform also has the incentive to share false information, which makes drivers question the credibility of the shared information. In this case, the surge pricing strategy can be used as a costly signal to verify the credibility of the information

Exploring the impact of social media content on travel envy and intention to visit destination: moderating role of narcissist admiration and rivalry

    No full text
International audienceSocial networking sites significantly influence the behavioralintentions of travelers. Considering this as an avenue of futureresearch, the current study explores how social media elementsinduce travel envy using multi-study approaches. Study 1 (N =338) is an experimental study aimed at investigating the impactof post type (emotional vs. rational) and post content (luxury vs.non-luxury) on travel envy and intention to visit a destination(IVTD). Study 2 (N = 190) is a survey-based study that explores themoderating role of narcissism between travel envy and IVTD byconsidering both post content and type. Study 3 (N = 289) teststhe composite model using survey-based and experimental-basedresearch designs. The findings reveal the robust impact of posttype and content in triggering travel envy and intentionsamongst recipients of particular social media posts. Theemotional-luxury post category has a relatively stronger influenceon travel envy and travel intentions than the rational-non-luxurypost type. Narcissism is found to play a moderating role in therelationship between travel envy and IVTD

Financial literacy, confidence and well-being: The mediating role of financial behavior

    No full text
International audienceThis study aims to investigate the impact of financial literacy and confidence on the financial well-being of US households and to explore the mediating role of financial behaviors in this relationship. To do this, we analyzed a large dataset from the two most recent waves of the state-by-state National Financial Capability Study (NFCS), covering a representative sample of US adults (n = 43,104). Results from multiple regression and mediation analyses, adjusted for relevant controls, show that financial literacy influences financial well-being directly and indirectly (mediated) through financial behaviors. Our analyses further indicate that financial confidence has a positive impact, directly and indirectly through financial behaviors, on financial well-being. Overall, our results suggest that higher levels of financial literacy and confidence lead to more responsible financial behavior, which, in turn, influences financial well-being. The findings of this study provide a valuable addition to the literature and directions for future research

Wining and dining out: on understanding restaurant wine lists

    No full text
International audienceAnalysis of the cultural role of meals has a long history, and dining out is significant in that history as perhaps their most public and observable example. This paper examines a neglected feature of dining out – the production and provision of wine lists. Adding wine to a meal can elevate it to a social event that reflects taste, status, and social distinction in ways that vary culturally. Whether to add wine choices to food choices offered as a transaction suggests an array of questions related to wine’s impact on the public dining experience. Drawing on a review of the literature, anecdotal evidence, and some recent data, this paper explores the role of wine in dining out, with a focus on wine list content and wine service

Ecological money and finance. Introducing sustainable monetary diversity

    No full text
International audienceThis paper introduces a sustainability policy prototype introducing sustainable monetary diversity to attain the Sustainable Development Goals. It first presents a new monetary policy framework to endogenize the creation, circulation, and destruction of complementary currencies. It then analyzes the implications of this new policy setting on a battery of eco-systemic, economic, monetary, and financial variables using Philia 1.0, a new ecological stock-flow consistent model. Simulations report an enhanced capacity for evolution, resilience, and fitness for evolution, lower carbon, energy, and material footprint, and improved financial stability. These findings call for further research on sustainable policy prototypes, and open fresh perspectives for global sustainability policies

From top gun to the daily grind: Contextualizing psychological contract breach for military pilots

    No full text
International audienceThis study expands our understanding of employee reactions to psychological contract (PC) breach by contextualizing the relationship between PC breach and feelings of violation in a European military setting through the study of strong commitment to specific career goals, high managerial turnover, lack of clarity about the perceived responsibility and controllability of PC breach, as well as aviation restrictions. Based on interviews with 41 pilots, we found that two factors—passion for job and professional commitment—which have not been a strong focus in extant research, play critical roles in the processes involved in employee PC breach reactions. We further contribute to the literature by demonstrating when, why, and where perceptions of PC breach influence exit, loyalty, voice, and neglect reactions in a military setting (e.g., we found that certain reactions, such as neglect, are restricted due to the potential safety consequences of said reactions). This research charts new directions for psychological contract research in which more attention is placed on the context within which psychological contract processes develop and change. We provide insights to practitioners and discuss implications, limitations, and future research directions

Taking maritime shipping agreements out of the box

    No full text
International audienceSince its beginnings in the 19th century, the liner shipping industry has shown specific peculiarities characterized by close collaboration between sea carriers. This cooperation has materialized through various types of inter-firm agreements that have been exempted from the key principles of competition law. Recently, strong criticism has emerged against strategic alliances and related agreements that rule a concentrated market where operators are strongly interrelated and increasingly integrated. However, the maritime management literature so far has given little attention to the concrete provisions of these agreements, which still appear as ‘black boxes.’ To fill this gap, we collected 61 enforced cooperative agreements registered with the U.S. Federal Maritime Commission from 1973 to 2020 using a three-way comparison through legal, linguistic, and business lenses of the differences between older and newer types of agreements. We underline the key temporal evolutions of these contracts and show how ocean carriers have incorporated new legal constraints and strategic needs driven by structural market changes toward greater logistics integration
