A sustainable on-demand urban delivery service enabled by synchromodality and synergy in passenger and freight mobility
International audienceThis paper investigates the opportunity to plan for a novel on-demand freight delivery service in urban areas with tight service and sustainability requirements. This contribution first attempts to focus on the feasibility of connecting people and freight mobility through the joint usage of transportation options. It builds on the hyperconnectivity principles enabled by the Physical Internet (PI) manifesto for city logistics, referred to as HCL (Hyperconnected City Logistics). To this end, this paper proposes a model-based decision support approach that seeks to produce effective delivery solutions for an on-demand multimodal transshipment problem. The approach considers multiple mobility options such as on-demand urban delivery services, cargo bikes, tramways, and buses to transship goods from one urban logistic hub to another. This novel short- term response planning problem complements the well-known day-before planning problem. The objective function aims to minimize the impact of freight moves in the time and space of urban transport networks. The proposed solution aims to increase the sustainability of cities by reducing congestion levels, the impact of logistics moves, as well as carbon emissions in urban areas. An illustrative case is provided to demonstrate how the novel multi-mode transportation system could operate and to provide an evaluation of the economic and sustainability benefits of such a system in an urban context. For a hyperconnected network, the impact of freight movements on the time and space of urban transport networks can be reduced by 91%. The results demonstrate the potential of urban synchromodality in improving economic efficiency, service capability, and sustainability
Linkage between Digital Supply Chain, Supply Chain Innovation and Supply Chain Dynamic Capabilities: An Empirical Study
International audienceThere has been limited research that has explored the connection between digital supply chain (DSC) and SC innovation and SC dynamic capabilities. This paper aims to examine the mediating effect of SC innovation on the relationship between DSC and SC dynamic capabilities
Exploring Barriers and Motivations in the Adoption of Food Waste Mobile Applications
International audienceFood waste is a serious global problem obstructing the path toward Sustainable Development Goal 2 (Zero Hunger). Several food waste mobile applications (FWMAs) have been launched in recent years, offering a technological means of connecting food businesses with consumers to redistribute leftover food. Food businesses, as the suppliers, provide leftover food on an FWMA platform, and the acceptance of that leftover food determines the quantity of food saved through this method. This paper aims to identify the barriers and motivations (B&Ms) underlying the decisions of food businesses regarding whether to participate in FWMA projects. PESTLE analysis is used to categorize potential B&Ms along six dimensions: political, economic, social, technological, legal, and environmental. Experts in FWMA, suppliers and operators, are then invited to respond to questions along a five-point Likert scale as part of the Delphi method. The questions ask about the participants’ level of agreement. Finally, the voting analytical hierarchy process is used to determine the relative importance of each B&M to the industry at large. Economic considerations constitute the biggest source of both motivation and barriers. The same goes for technological factors, though to a lesser degree. Notably, however, FWMA operators point to political factors as the biggest source of barriers. This pioneering study examines FWMA acceptance from the supply side. Despite its brief history, FWMAs excel in the market. Challenges in the B2C model hint at both motivations and barriers. Existing literature lacks comprehensive insights, mainly focusing on consumer perspectives
From waste to wealth: Policies to promote the circular economy
International audienceThis policy article addresses the urgent need for a comprehensive policy framework to advance the circular economy, a crucial strategy in mitigating the global waste and pollution crisis. It seeks to bridge the research gap by evaluating and structuring circular economy policies across various governance levels, employing an ecological economics perspective. Through a synthesis of literature and case studies, the article examines the effectiveness of regulatory policies, economic incentives, and voluntary measures, and confronts the cultural, behavioral, economic, regulatory, technical, and logistical barriers to implementation. The findings underscore the importance of integrated policy approaches, such as extended producer responsibility, environmental taxes, and corporate sustainability practices, offering actionable insights for stakeholders. This contribution is significant for its strategic recommendations, which are vital for transitioning towards sustainable development and operationalizing the circular economy in practice
Utility foundation of a Cobb-Douglas demand function with more than two attributes, consumer surplus and social welfare computation
International audienceThe utility foundation of the Cobb-Douglas demand function is known for the one and two attributes cases. It is unknown in the case of three or more attributes, a regular need for modellers. In this article, we contribute by founding from a programme of (quasi-linear) utility maximization a Cobb-Douglas demand function of an arbitrary large number of attributes. We also contribute by providing simple formulas for consumer surplus and social welfare. By generalizing previous results, our research offers a normative foundation to a larger class of demand functions
In Persuit of Impact: How Psychological Contract Research Can Make the Work-World a Better Place
International audienceThis paper is the result of the collective work undertaken by a group ofPsychological Contract (PC) and Sustainability scholars from around theworld, following the 2023 Bi-Annual PC Small Group Conference (KedgeBusiness School, Bordeaux, France). As part of the conference, scholarsengaged in a workshop designed to generate expert guidance on how to aidthe PC field to be better aligned with the needs of practice, and thus, impactthe creation and maintenance of high-quality and sustainable exchangeprocesses at work. In accordance with accreditation bodies for higher education, research impact is not limited to academic papers alone but alsoincludes practitioners, policymakers, and students in its scope. This papertherefore incorporates elements from an impact measurement tool for highereducation in management so as to explore how PC scholars can bolster thebeneficial influence of PC knowledge on employment relationships throughdifferent stakeholders and means. Accordingly, our proposals for the pursuitof PC impact are organized in three parts: (1) research, (2) practice andsociety, and (3) students. Further, this paper contributes to the emergingdebate on sustainable PCs by developing a construct definition and integratingPCs with an ‘ethics of care’ perspective
Constitutional enshrinement as a way of safeguarding abortion rights: The case of France
International audienceFrance's landmark constitutional amendment in 2024 enshrines abortion freedom in its supreme legal framework, representing a profound milestone against the backdrop of shifting global political and social attitudes toward abortion. This decision, influenced by disruptive events such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the overturning of constitutional abortion rights in the United States, places France to the forefront of protecting abortion access. Despite ongoing challenges in accessing services in certain areas and circumstances, this amendment sets a precedent for other nations considering similar protections. We offer key insights into this case and reflect on how it can potentially shape legislative trends in abortion rights worldwide
