The Rakhains are an ethnic group of diasporic peoples currently living in different parts of Bangladesh. Following their exodus in 1784, they formed enclaves of settlements in Cox’s Bazar, Chittagong Hill-tracts, Noakhali, Patuakhali and Barguna. This paper scrutinizes how cultural assimilation has impacted on the lifestyles of the diasporic Rakhain communities living in Patuakhali, a district in the Southern region of Bangladesh; and it also demonstrates how this assimilation has brought in internal cultural changes among the Rakhain peoples. Methods of analyses of this research include conducting interviews of Rakhain headsmen, conducting library based research and analyzing news articles and relevant audio-visual discourses. Results of data and analyses show that the Rakhain peoples have faced difficulties in retaining cultural integrity despite their deliberate attempts, and they have undergone a degree of cultural changes in the recent decades. This paper finds that unwelcoming neighborhoods, lack of education, financial insolvency and disproportionately low representation in the local government are the principal reasons behind these changes

PROBLEM OF PLACE, SPACE AND PARTITION IN BHISHAM SAHNI’S NOVEL TAMAS

    Get PDF
Human beings adapt themselves according to the environment they live in and create their own space among others for better survival in society. The geographical and societal space they acquire gives them a sense of security and a sense of belongingness. If this space is taken away by dislocating them, it leads to mental and physical vacuum which is experienced across generations. A similar problem of space can be traced back in the history of India, when the partition of the country into India and Pakistan took place. People who were living in one town from many generations were dislocated on the basis of religion they belonged to. Feeling of security and belongingness they once enjoyed was snatched from them and they became an outsider in their own country. They were forced to migrate from one place to another and were left with only alternative, to readapt themselves to create their new identity. Real accounts of such vacuums caused by partition can be seen in Bhisham Sahni’s novel Tamas. Hindu and Sikh families of Small-Town province were caught in the fury of political turmoil of Partition due to religious riots that broke out leading to massacre, suicide, abduction and rape. Peace loving people who enjoyed space in their homeland were dislocated in the name of religion. Hindus and Muslims of one town who were friends and neighbors all their life turned into enemies and fought with one another to destroy the space and identity of people on the basis of petty issues. In the proposed paper the researcher aims to analyze the effect of partition in deconstruction and reconstruction of space and the strategies adopted by characters to relocate themselves in alien environments and geographical space

DISPLACEMENT, NOSTALGIA AND EXPERIENCE OF RETURN: READING MOURID BARGHOUTI’S I SAW RAMALLAH

    Get PDF
As Boym writes, "Nostalgia is an ache of temporal distance and displacement", and restorative nostalgia takes care of both of these symptoms. Distance is compensated by intimate experience and the availability of the desired object. Displacement is cured by a 'return home' (44). In this article, I study I Saw Ramallah by Mourid Barghouti and examine how this return becomes very important for the displaced. I expand on the analysis of nostalgia as a means of creating identity continuity, in the face of displacement, by adding an explicit focus on the experience of return. Set at the borders of Israel and Palestine, I Saw Ramallah, engages with Barghouti's lifelong struggle with his absence from his home. More specifically a memoir than a life narrative, it is an important walk through an individual's construction of his self in the moment he returns to the land which has brought him so much joy, and pain

Corporate Social Responsibility of private universities is a commitment to ethical conduct for economic development contribution as well as improving the quality of academic, spiritual, and material life for related members. Through implementing CSR strategies, higher education institutions are now using this approach as a part of their competitive strategy. SAY ‘NO’ RACISM TOWARDS ROHINGYA REFUGEE

    Get PDF
Racism is a global question. It is now happening in many countries of the world. Many poor and needy people are now getting tormented and conflicted due to racism and military conflicts. In this individual proposal, I would like to talk about a racial conflict currently happening at Rakhine and Arakan States in Myanmar. I would argue that the Rohingya Refugee Crisis should be banned at any cost by the influential global leaders since it is a big challenge for two neighboring countries, like Bangladesh and Myanmar. According to the United Nations, the Rohingyas are the most persecuted minority groups in the globe. From 2012 to the present, the whole world has witnessed Myanmar’s renewed waves of full-fledged genocide campaign, hate crimes, and ostracizing against the most vulnerable and unarmed Rohingya population in the name of national security. Myanmar is responsible for the worst sufferings of the Rohingya. Consequently, it has failed to perform its obligation under the International Law to protect its citizens, which amounts to internationally wrongful acts. According to Articles 31 and 41 of the UN Draft Articles on Responsibility of States for Internationally Wrongful Acts, the responsible state is under an obligation to make full-repairation for the injury caused by its internationally wrongful acts. Are the Rohingya Refugees not the nations of the states? Don't they have Human Rights? How long will the tormented and downtrodden communities tolerate such cruelty and injustice? What sorts of role will International Law and the UN play for the Rohingya refugees? For this purpose, I would like to motivate the world's intellectual figures so that the Rohingya Refugee crisis must be protected through an everlasting solution. No people of the world must be neglected like the Rohingya refugees. All human beings are equal in the eye of the law; they have the same blood and same body. Anyway, the light talk aims to focus on the conflicting senses of the minority groups in the light of Racism and taking precautionary steps
