Get PDFSurabaya Green and Clean (SGC) began in 2001 and it aimed at realizing a more effective and efficient green space (Ruang Terbuka Hijau) to fulfill the needs of green space in Surabaya city. SGC program is originally motivated by the closure of garbage disposal (TPA) Keputih in 2005 which resulted in the emergence of waste management's problem in Surabaya. Therefore, the government finds the solution through the SGC and it needs the anticipation and awareness from the inhabitants. Peneleh is one of the eldest and original kampung in Surabaya center. There are many cultural heritages in Peneleh which still exist although there are some buildings that are slightly damaged and dirty. From their participation in the SGC, the question that may be
raised is how the program influences the sense of belonging to the city of Surabaya. In the discussion, the writer use Cliff Hague and Paul Jenkins: Place Identity. Participation and Planning. This study will take data of interviews from the informants which participate in the SGC. The selfnarrative theory by McAdams is used to analyze the interviews of the informants. A questionnaire technique was employed to collect data needed for the study. Questionnaires containing seventeen items or questions were distributed to fifty respondents. Upon collecting them, only 38 were considered to be reliable and qualified for the study. THE EFFECT OF CHARACTER AND SETTING TOWARDS THE CONFLICT OF THE MAIN CHARACTER IN CORMAC MCCARTHY'STHEROAD
Get PDFIn literature, conflict is defined as the inherent incompatibility between the objectives of two or more characters or forces. The nature of conflict is unstable. One side must always win and one side must always lose in the end. This study is aimed to examine how setting and characters affect the conflict of the main character in The Road by Cormac McCarty. The qualitative approach was used in this study. In this study, the writer chose intrinsic approach as the main tool for analysis. From the discussion, it is concluded that the setting does not really affect the conflict of the main character. The major reason is that because the setting is not really explored by the author and only limited to the setting of place and time. On the other hand, the character of the main character affects most of the conflict happening to his life. There are some characters which can make the Man able to survive and bring his Son further to the South: strong, hard-heart, firm, and unyielding. This affects most of his conflicts of life and also the way to face and finally deal with those conflicts. Even though at one point he is proven also to be weak, his strong, bard-hearted, finn, and unyielding characters win over and finally save him of being lost, beaten, and dead (regardless the fact that he is told to be dead at the end of the story)
