A curated global dataset of social contact between diverse language communities
International audienceThe GramAdapt Social Contact Dataset is a curated dataset of 34 language pairs with qualitative and quantifiable data on social interaction and aspects of societal multilingualism. The language pairs were sampled globally to represent the world’s linguistic diversity. The dataset can be used to interrogate the social dimensions of language contact independently or in conjunction with appropriate linguistic data. The data were collected by distributing a questionnaire to experts who have experience with either one or both of the language communities of a pair. The data represent subjective expert assessments based on choices from predetermined answers which can be quantified. Authors 1, 2 and 3 manually checked the response to identify possible misjudgments or misunderstandings. This results in a dataset containing 13,493 data points. This dataset is a first of its kind in the field of linguistics, built upon wide findings from sociolinguistics, historical linguistics, psycholinguistics, and linguistic anthropology
A New Approach to Radiocarbon Summarisation: Rigorous Identification of Variations/Changepoints in the Occurrence Rate of Radiocarbon Samples using a Poisson Process
International audienceA commonly-used paradigm to estimate changes in the frequency of past events or the size of populations is to consider the occurrence rate of archaeological/environmental samples found at a site over time. The reliability of such a "dates-as-data" approach is highly dependent upon how the occurrence rates are estimated from the underlying samples, particularly when calendar age information for the samples is obtained from radiocarbon (14C). The most frequently used "14C-dates-as-data" approach of creating Summed Probability Distributions (SPDs) is not statistically valid, or coherent, and can provide highly misleading inference. Here, we provide an alternative method with a rigorous statistical underpinning that also provides valuable additional information on potential changepoints in the rate of events. Furthermore, unlike current SPD alternatives, our summarisation approach does not restrict users to pre-specified, rigid, summary formats (e.g., exponential or logistic growth) but instead flexibly adapts to the dates themselves. Our methodology ensures more reliable "14C-dates-as-data" analyses, allowing us to better assess and identify potential signals present. We model the occurrence of events, each assumed to leave a radiocarbon sample in the archaeological/environmental record, as an inhomogeneous Poisson process. The varying rate of samples over time is then estimated within a fully-Bayesian framework using reversible-jump Markov Chain Monte Carlo (RJ-MCMC). Given a set of radiocarbon samples, we reconstruct how their occurrence rate varies over calendar time and identify if that rate contains statistically-significant changes, i.e., specific times at which the rate of events abruptly changes. We illustrate our method with both a simulation study and a practical example concerning late-Pleistocene megafaunal population changes in Alaska and Yukon
The earliest documents in Old Javanese
International audienceThis short contribution presents two recently discovered inscriptions from Central Java that are among the oldest documents in the Old Javanese language, namely a dated stone from Kesongo (685 Śaka/743 CE) and the Disunuh inscription (709 Śaka/787 CE). These two artefacts constitute new evidence that Old Javanese had become a written language in this part of Java already in the eighth century CE. Previously, the period of use of Old Javanese in epigraphy was reckoned to have begun in the ninth century, and in East Java, based on the Harinjing A inscription from Kediri, assumed to date to 726 Śaka/804 CE. The new discoveries require a revision of the chronology of the emergence of vernacular epigraphy on the island of Java
Admiración, indignación, invención. Javier Krahe tras Georges Brassens
International audienceBa Na Hills is a leisure park located in the mountainous region of Central Vietnam managed by Sun Group, one of the largest tourism operator in the country. During the colonial era, a hill station was built on the same spot. Although nothing remains of the historical site, Bana Hills thrives on the narrative of French thematization. In this regard, Ba Na Hills is an original trajectory of complete reappropriation, the Vietnamese tourists forming the bulk of the frequentation. Rather than a standardized application of a globalized model, the park is tuned to local practices, particularly the spiritual dimension given to the mountain, with a vast array of pagodas. By contrasting archives, semi-participant observations, photographic material and surveys carried out in 2007, 2016 and 2022, we will show that the place’s enchantment paradoxically rests on a certain continuity between both the colonial hill station and the contemporary leisure park, two enclaves of tourist globalization. Indeed, Ba Na Hills embodies a form of modern heterotopia that make it stand out. In some ways, this results in a break with its immediate environment, which is now subject to criticism.
Stigma and structural violence in health care during trans People’s transitions in México City: a qualitative study
International audienceBackground: Trans people in Mexico City encounter stigma and structural violence throughout social, medical, and legal transitions, leading to poorer health and secondary disabilities. Yet these processes are not sufficiently documented, and community-based recommendations are rare. Methods: Multisite ethnographic study (Sept 2021-May 2024) with participant/nonparticipant observation and 20 semi-structured interviews (18 trans participants, two providers). Results: Discrimination, administrative hurdles, and inaccessible services drive (self-)exclusion from care. Conclusion: Propose inclusive, respectful, and empathetic care models coupled with community-led training for health professionals
Comparing the Machineries of Extradition: Between Functional and Cultural Approaches
International audienceThis Article aims to provide a comparison of three surrender schemes, namely international extradition, interstate rendition in the United States, and the European arrest warrant (EAW). If these three regimes fulfill the same function, they do so differently, using distinct terminology, relying on different legal sources, establishing separate procedures, and prioritizing the rights and powers of the actors involved along contrasting lines. A close survey of these variations highlights the existing gulf between these apparently similar techniques. It also provides a key to understanding these differences in light of the historical and political contexts in which extradition schemes are embedded. The comparison of extradition regimes opens a windo w onto the broader landscape, revealing competing ideologies and structural shifts at play in crime control policies. The evolution of surrender regimes illustrates the project of increased cooperation by which sovereigns, be they component states of a national federation or sovereign states in a transnational community, find ways to project their law enforcement power beyond their borders. It is noticeable in this respect that the EAW fits within a larger narrative traceable both in the United States and in the international community, which emphasizes the need for more intensive interactions between criminal justice systems to tackle the mobility of criminals and the growth of cross-border crime. This widely shared project, which ties together the local, the regional, and the transnational in the fight against criminality, confirms that the focus on state-based legal orders which dominates mainstream comparative law may not be enough to grasp the current legal evolutions. With the decline of the significance of traditional geopolitical divisions, it is now also necessary to compare institutions belonging to legal systems of different levels (national, regional, international) and extradition regimes stand as perfect candidates for such an academic enterprise
International audienceThis article reconstructs the steps and the circumstances that led to the dissolution of the Portuguese Israelite Community, established in 1710 by a group of Sephardic Jews settled in Tunis between the 17th and 18th centuries. The creation of this community officially sanctioned an institutional division between these Jews (coming from the port of Livorno and therefore called Livornese or Grana) and the local Jews (also called Twansa). With the establishment of the French protectorate in 1881, this institutional duality was contested both by the new colonial authorities and by part of the Tunisian Jewish population, while the Grana engaged a fiery resistance to any strategy of absorption. This article aims to follow the steps and the flaws of the rapprochement between the two communities, focusing on the public debate about the reunification. At the same time, it analyses the identity issues and the cultural strategies developed by the Jews of the Portuguese Community to legitimize its existence.
