    No full text
Founded on 1 May 1984 by Corsican nationalist activists close to the National Liberation Front of Corsica, the Sindicatu di i travagliadori corsi (Corsican Workers' Union, STC) established itself as the island's leading trade union force in December 2002. Despite this success, the history of this organisation remains largely unknown. Until now, social science research on contemporary Corsican nationalism has focused mainly on clandestine organisations and political parties, almost entirely neglecting the nebulous network of associations and trade unions set up by nationalist activists in the early 1980s. After tracing the emergence of trade union concerns within Corsican nationalism, this thesis examines the origins of the STC and how, between 1984 and 1991, it managed to establish its own legitimacy, both within the nationalist movement and in the island's trade union sphere. The analysis is based on a variety of sources, including trade union archives, press articles, oral testimonies and police sources. It shows how important it is for researchers to give serious consideration to trade union forms of nationalist engagement and also invites them to pay greater attention to the nationalist logic that often discreetly underpins trade union activity.

Glass Production in Sri Lanka : A Report on the 2022 Excavations and Survey at the Pabalugala Archaeological Reserve, Giribawa

International audienceThis article presents the results of the first campaign of archaeological excavations that took place on the glass production site of Pabalugala (Giribawa), Sri Lanka, in 2022. It highlights the importance of the site for the understanding of glass production in Sri Lanka and for glass-making techniques in general. The unique semi-circular shape of the furnaces that were discovered opens a new window into bead-making technology. The type of glass corresponds to the composition of indo-pacific beads but differentiates clearly from South Indian glass. Its identification allows new areas of research concerning the export of Sri Lankan glass, particularly in South-East Asia. Thus, Giribawa constitutes an exceptional discovery and very promising site not only for the knowledge of glass technology but also for trade networks in Asia

Fire and heat, from hearth to charcoal: An experimental approach to temperature in the context of Palaeolithic hearths

    No full text
International audienceWhether one is interested in palaeoeconomics or technical aspects of fire use, or in taphonomy, the concept of temperature plays a central role in charcoal analysis. What does the temperature reveal about the function of the hearths? Can prehistoric hearth temperatures be accurately measured a posteriori, and what information could be gleaned from such measurements? Changing scale, what are the effects of fire temperatures on the residues themselves in terms of taphonomy and what are the consequences for the preservation of isotopic and molecular signatures? To address these questions, we conducted over two hundred experimental standardised combustions under laboratory conditions. Our results, supported by mathematical data processing, provide insight into the properties of wood combustion, including fragmentation processes. We also explored the challenges of measuring temperatures in both the combustion structures and the charcoal itself. Our results show that temperatures in the open-air fireplaces are highly labile, with average temperatures always within the same range regardless of the taxa. We also provide information on the effect of temperature on fragmentation processes but also on the isotopic and molecular signature

    No full text
From the earliest ancient writings to Shakespearean drama, the figure of the “madman” occupies a liminal position, lacking any stable geographical or psychological anchoring. It embodies a form of wandering that Foucault describes in Madness and Civilization. He interprets the seventeenth century as a transitional period during which errant madness becomes progressively institutionalized under the influence of a new social and literary ideal: rationalization. The policy of confining society’s marginal figures—what Foucault famously terms the “Great Confinement”—marks a decisive turning point in literary history. The longstanding tradition of the wandering fool gradually disappears, giving way to an essentialized and contained form of madness characteristic of the Victorian nineteenth century. Neo-Victorian literature revisits these themes, yet reconfigures them: madness is portrayed less as an intrinsic, individual essence than as the product of alienating social structures. Still, a central question remains: do these rewritings truly offer a more modern, even existentialist, vision of madness? This dissertation examines representations of marginality in three neo-Victorian novels: Michel Faber’s The Crimson Petal and the White, John Fowles’s The French Lieutenant’s Woman, and Margaret Atwood’s Alias Grace. Through the trajectories of Agnes, Sarah, and Grace, alongside a Victorian world permeated by subtle forms of irrationality, we explore madness as a space of freedom, as wandering and resistance in the face of Foucault’s “Great Confinement.” The diversity of representations offered by these works allows us to trace an evolution from enclosed madness to liberated madness, approached through psychological, social, and spatial lenses. In parallel with Foucault’s model, we propose to understand the neo-Victorian mode as a literary “great transition,” one that complicates the notion of wandering and foregrounds the liminality of madness.
