Perspectives on the typology of linguistic numerations
No full textTo describe linguistic numerations and classify their types, we need to clarify the properties of two sets of words within number names: digit cycles and pivots. These are defined in relation to a morphosyntax-that is, a set of tools used to combine them. Furthermore, the flexibility of this morphosyntax-within pragmatic or cognitive boundaries-can be understood through the concept of languaging: the dynamic use of language to create and mediate meaning rather than viewing language as a fixed system. This concept encompasses processes such as on-the-spot creativity, cultural development and language planning-all of which play a role in the linguistic expressions of numbers

No full textThis research focuses on a specific memorialization process. It encompasses the long twentieth century since 1911. It questions the rhythms and forms of its temporal and territorial circulation, between the American continent and Europe. It observes the discourses, uses, cultural productions and evolutions both in the forms of the memory of the accident and in its transmission. It focuses on the various entrepreneurs of memory (institutional or associative, collective or individual) as well as the “nodes of memory” they have helped to create. It reveals the political, cultural and social complexity of this memory. It highlights the long absence of an “official” memory. Its permanent physical inscription is one of the illustrations of the evolution of this relationship between the nation and the event, as are the transformations of commemorative phenomena. They reflect the difficulty of constructing a shared narrative and renewed mobilization on behalf of the victims. Belonging to a memorial base shared by the American nation comes after the ongoing mobilization of a textile garment industry union, the ILGWU, to have this industrial accident recognized, and to oppose the violence done to those who are almost forgotten: mostly young, migrant women from Eastern and Southern Europe, who were unskilled workers at the time. The didactic and pedagogical dimensions of the tragedy were transmitted through memorial productions rooted in the culture of the New York Jewish communities to which most of the victims and members of the ILGWU belonged, and which went beyond it. This memory is rooted in mourning, but above all in the ongoing struggle for equal political and social rights, and for better protection of the most vulnerable members of the working class.Cette recherche porte sur un processus de mémorialisation spécifique. Elle se focalise sur un long vingtième siècle depuis 1911. Elle questionne les rythmes et les formes de sa circulation temporelle et territoriale, entre le continent américain et l’Europe. Elle en observe les discours, les usages, les productions culturelles, les évolutions tant dans les formes de la mémoire du drame que dans sa transmission. Elle s’attache aux différents entrepreneurs de mémoire (institutionnels ou associatifs, collectifs ou individuels) ainsi qu’aux « nœuds de mémoires » qu’ils ont contribué à constituer. Elle fait apparaître la complexité politique, culturelle et sociale de cette mémoire. Elle souligne la longue absence d’une mémoire « officielle ». Son inscription physique pérenne est l’une des illustrations de l’évolution de ce rapport entre la nation et l’événement, tout comme les transformations des phénomènes commémoratifs. Ils rendent compte de la difficile construction d’un récit partagé et d’une mobilisation renouvelée en faveur des victimes. L’appartenance à un socle mémoriel commun à la nation américaine intervient après la mobilisation continue d’un syndicat de l’industrie de la confection textile, l’ILGWU, pour faire reconnaître cet accident industriel, pour s’opposer à la violence faite à celles et ceux qui sont presque oubliés : des femmes majoritairement, jeunes, migrantes venues d’Europe de l’Est et du Sud, ouvrières alors sans qualification. Des dimensions didactique et pédagogique du drame dont la transmission a pu prendre appui sur des productions mémorielles qui s’enracinent dans la culture des communautés juives new-yorkaises auxquelles appartiennent la majorité de victimes et des membres de l’ILGWU., puis la dépasse. Cette mémoire s’ancre dans le deuil mais surtout dans le combat, toujours d’actualité, pour obtenir une égalité de droits politiques et sociaux, pour parvenir à une meilleure protection des plus vulnérables de la classe ouvrière
L'équivocité du tournant citoyenniste de l'UE : Des conceptions multiples de la délibération citoyenne
No full textInternational audienceEuropean institutions have promoted and implemented a citizen turn since the beginning of the 2000s, with the use of mini‐publics where randomly selected citizens deliberate on European policies. Even if citizen deliberation can nowadays be considered as a consensual narrative of European Union (EU) legitimization, the article contends that it remains an interesting proxy through which to understand and evaluate power struggles among several EU actors. Notably, not all the actors involved in designing and implementing citizen procedures at the EU level do so for the same interests and with shared conceptions. Based on documentary analysis, interviews, and the observation of three EU citizen randomly selected procedures, this article identifies several conceptions of citizen deliberation: the civic conception, the identity‐building conception, the neo‐managerial conception, and the political instrumentalization conception. Such equivocality of citizen deliberation at the EU level enriches academic analyses focusing on the institutional lockdown of citizen deliberative experiments.Las instituciones europeas han promovido e implementado el turno ciudadano desde principios de la década de 2000, mediante el uso de minipúblicos donde ciudadanos seleccionados aleatoriamente deliberan sobre políticas europeas. Si bien la deliberación ciudadana puede considerarse hoy en día una narrativa consensuada de la legitimación de la Unión Europea (UE), el artículo sostiene que sigue siendo un indicador interesante para comprender y evaluar las luchas de poder entre diversos actores de la UE. Cabe destacar que no todos los actores involucrados en el diseño e implementación de procedimientos ciudadanos a nivel de la UE lo hacen por los mismos intereses y con concepciones compartidas. A partir del análisis documental, entrevistas y la observación de tres procedimientos ciudadanos de la UE seleccionados aleatoriamente, este artículo identifica varias concepciones de la deliberación ciudadana: la concepción cívica, la concepción de construcción de identidad, la concepción neogerencial y la concepción de instrumentalización política. Esta ambigüedad de la deliberación ciudadana a nivel de la UE enriquece los análisis académicos centrados en el bloqueo institucional de los experimentos deliberativos ciudadanos
For a Semiotic Approach to Generative Image AI: On Compositional Criteria
No full textInternational audienceThis article analyzes the semiotic functioning of Midjourney and DALL•E, two generative AI models capable of producing images out of natural language prompts. The theoretical assumption of this article is that the images produced by these AIs are the results of a particular intersemiotic translation, realized through the collaboration of human and computational operators. Our research will show the specificity of the intersemiotic translation realized by AIs vis-à-vis more classical kinds of translation (e.g., from a novel to a movie) and will also analyze the different kinds of "visual reasoning" characterizing Midjourney and DALL•E. Our article has two goals: first, to study how these models perform intersemiotic translations; namely, what choices they make in order to translate the generality of the symbolic (and indexical) signs of verbal languages into the specificity of the visual composition. Second, we intend to verify the degree of control that one can have over the visual composition. Following this, we present the results of the tests carried out on Midjourney and DALL•E pertaining to two semiotic macro-criteria: plastic categories (eidetic, chromatic, and topological) and visual enunciation (gaze relations, visual translation of verbalized actions, temporality, and aspectuality). These criteria were developed by Paris School semiotics in order to analyze artistic images. Here, they will be used as principles of composition and parameters for controlling the results. At the end, we demonstrate that through this experimentation with elementary parameters of visual composition, semiotics can provide an epistemological and analytical framework for understanding and assessing the intersemiotic translations realized through generative AIs. Reciprocally, these tests on AIs aid our understanding of the two semiotic macro-criteria used, notably leading to a multiplication of enunciative instances in image production. No full textInternational audienceLes montants colossaux de l’aide publique aux entreprises, entre 200 et 250 Mrds € en 2024, ne souffrent aucune discussion publique. Face à cette situation critique, l’article propose l’institution d’une sécurité sociale industrielle. En effet, la multiplication actuelle des plans de licenciement qui touchent en premier lieu des sites industriels conduit à envisager une intervention des représentants des salariés à travers l’élaboration de contrepropositions à ces projets de licenciement en se fondant sur des investissements financés par ces aides publiques. Il reviendrait à des organismes paritaires de branche de contrôler la pertinence de ces contrepropositions, en se voyant confier la gestion des actifs publics résultant de ces investissements consolidés dans le capital des entreprises. Sortant de la logique exclusivement bancaire de BpiFrance, la gestion sociale de ces actifs publics pourrait amplifier le cette démocratisation industrielle, à travers les retours financiers de ces actifs et le droit de regard qui en résulte sur la gestion des entreprises concernées
Broadband polarized radio emission detected from Starlink satellites below 100 MHz with NenuFAR
No full textInternational audienceAims. We evaluate the impact of Starlink satellites on low-frequency radio astronomy below 100 MHz. We focus on challenges of the data processing and on scientific goals.Methods. We conducted 40 hours of imaging observations using NenuFAR in the 30.8–78.3 MHz range. Observations included both the targeted tracking of specific satellites based on orbital predictions and the untargeted searches focused on high-elevation regions of the sky. Images in total intensity and polarimetry were obtained, and full Stokes dynamic spectra were generated for several hundred directions within the field of view. The detected signals were cross-matched with satellite orbital data to confirm the satellite associations. We performed detailed analyses of the observed spectra, polarization, and temporal characteristics to investigate the origin and properties of the detected emissions.Results. We detected broadband emissions from Starlink satellites, predominantly between 54–66 MHz, with flux densities exceeding 500 Jy. These signals are highly polarized and unlikely to originate from ground-based radio frequency interference or reflected astronomical sources. Instead, they are likely intrinsic to the satellites, and distinct differences in the emission properties are observed for the different satellite generations. These findings highlight significant challenges to the data processing and scientific discoveries at these low frequencies and emphasize the need for effective mitigation strategies, in particular, through collaboration between astronomers and satellite operators

No full textCERI/LabLe cinéclub du CERI a clôturé l'année universitaire par la projection du film Dahomey de la réalisatrice franco-sénégalaise Mati Diop, toujours chez notre partenaire L'Entrepôt. Pour cette sixième séance d'un rendez-vous que nous espérons deviendra vite incontournable pour qui veut penser le monde au travers du dialogue entre cinéma et sciences sociales, nous avons convié Androula Michael, historienne de l'art en résidence au CERI cette année, et Jean-Michel Frodon, professeur associé à Sciences Po, et grand spécialiste du cinéma s'il en est. Tous deux nous ont livré une analyse fine et stimulante d'un film qui ouvre à la réflexion de nombreuses questions historiques, internationales, cinématographiques. Androula Michael et Jean-Michel Frodon nous proposent ici quelques éléments de réflexion supplémentaires
