International audienceUniversity educational collections need to be integrated to ensure their long-term survival. Often reduced to their heritage value, we must preserve their educational role by opening up to new audiences to include training and debate on current issues. This text is both a historical study and a review of experience, presenting the case of Sorbonne University’s zoology collection. The aim is to show how the study of objects, archives and spaces sheds light on the processes of transmission, transformation and reconfiguration of the university heritage. The analysis will be punctuated by three photographs of the collection taken at different times in its existence. This contribution seeks to serve as a useful testi- mony for others engaged in similar processes.

In 1379, when the King of France took control of the Mouzon region, Sedan was still just a small, anonymous village wedged between the Meuse and the foothills of the Ardennes. In 1424, the arrival of the La Marck lords was a major upheaval. Supported by a fortified castle, and taking advantage of their border position, they soon set out to establish sovereign power, despite what the law decreed. In the last quarter of the 16th century, their quest became a reality, as they embraced the Calvinist Reformation - at first risky, but ultimately beneficial in many ways. The principality of Sedan became at once a renowned stronghold useful to France, a refuge in the midst of the Wars of Religion, watched with abomination or fascination, and a bastion of Calvinism of which the princes were proud. In the early 17th century, the construction of a Protestant Academy, in addition to a humanities college and small schools, contributed to Sedan's Calvinist heyday. Professors and students from all over France and Europe flocked to Sedan, giving the town an international reputation that the Prince endeavored to strengthen. At the turn of the 1630s and 1640s, the abjuration of the La Tour d'Auvergne family, combined with France's takeover of the principality, heralded a return to a situation more in line with royal policy. Sedan's distinctive character was about to be shattered even if Governor Fabert initially opted for gentleness. From 1681 onwards, increasingly violent attacks on the Protestant churches and their offshoots, including the Academic College, sealed the fate of “Little Geneva”. Now underground, the Protestants of the Sedan region had to contend with increasing violence, while at the same time organizing themselves for survival. Taking to the road to escape or resisting were possibilities, while the relative proximity of Maastricht, Olne and above all Namur, where a Protestant church was built in 1713, enabled them to maintain their faith as well as their hope for a better future that had become realistic only half a century later.
Comparing efficacy of IPA vs Pinyin romanisation transcriptions for complex tonal languages: A case study in Baima
International audienceHow is automated tone transcription affected by the choice of transcription orthography? In this paper we present a range of experiments that indicate that, even when the tonal representations are kept the same, the way vowels and consonants are transcribed can affect tonal character outputs. Our results also indicate that using a Language Model (LM) for decoding can mitigate problems with tonal outputs, but tones remain the most difficult part of the transcription. In doing this we also present the first Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) models for the Baima language, spoken in Sichuan and Gansu, China. We hope to use these models to contribute to ongoing documentation efforts.</div
Nazret, Tigray, the Metropolitan Seat of the Church of Ethiopia from the Twelfth to the Fourteenth Century: Material and Written Evidence
International audienceThis article challenges the widely held belief that the seat of the Christian metropolitan bishopric in Ethiopia remained in Aksum (the ancient capital) or Lalibela (the hypothetical medieval capital) following the seventh century collapse of the Aksumite kingdom. To the contrary, our article, based on two seasons of archaeological fieldwork as well as a reassessment of the documentary evidence, suggests that the metropolitan seat was the now ruined place of Nāzret in southern Tǝgrāy. Evidence from the remains of two churches there (Māyām [Mary] and Golǝgotā [Golgotha]), as well as fresh readings of scattered sources, argues in favor of Nāzret as the seat of the Ethiopian metropolitan from the early twelfth century (at the latest) until the fourteenth century (at the earliest). By examining the material and documentary evidence, the ruined church of Nāzret reveals a new history, reorienting not only current narratives of medieval Christian Ethiopia but also its relationship with Coptic and Islamic Egypt. Moreover, the profoundly cosmopolitan archaeological context of the church ruins suggests broad implications for medieval Christian and Islamic exchange
SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES IN LORALAI DISTRICT, BALOCHISTAN, PAKISTAN BASED ON GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM (GIS)
International audienceLoralai hosts a number of archaeological sites and is considered an important area, where a concentration of prehistoric archaeological sites was noted in previous research. For this purpose, the GIS spatial analysis methods, such as Buffer, K-means clustering and heat map, were used to understand the distribution of archaeological sites in the landscape. The initial result obtained from GIS and ground surveys in 2020, 2021, and 2022 indicated that the prehistoric people wisely resided in those places of the landscape where they found water and fertile land. The paper shows that natural factors were the reason behind the distribution of archaeological sites in the study area.</div
