« A Dream of the [South] » : conceptions du Sud des États-Unis dans les nouvelles de William Gilmore Simms (1806-1870)

    No full text
William Gilmore Simms (1806-1870) is a prolific writer from South Carolina, whose staunch defense of slavery and hostility to the principles of democracy challenge the parameters of the U.S. literary canon. Up to this point, scholarship on Simms has focused on his longer fiction - some twenty historical romances -, as a way to study the writing of history, and to understand the shift between Romanticism and Realism which takes place on the U.S. literary market over the nineteenth century. Departing from this critical tradition, this dissertation resorts to tools from humanistic geography and geocriticism, theories spawned after the spatial turn, to examine Simms's short fiction. Inspired by one of his early stories, the phrase “A Dream of the [South]” aims to grasp the ambitions and illusions of texts which conceive - understood both as “thinking” and “generating” - (of) Southern spaces and places. These, as this dissertation contends, are subject to (re)configurations in the texts, rather than being preconceived. On account of their sheer number and generic variety, Simms's short stories set in motion the lines that form the cultural territorialization of the Antebellum South, testing such regional clichés as impenetrable swamps and stagnant idylls. Besides, due to their national circulation in journals and (sometimes multiple) republications in collections, his stories invite reappraisal alongside the fiction of his Southern and Northern contemporaries. From the familiar crossroads of slave plantations and Frontier to more elusive constructs such as the natural environment and the spectral spaces of Gothicism, the texts under consideration unsettle the real-and-imagined contours of Simms's South. Their ample reach, however, does not translate into an equal or comprehensive treatment of their object. Extravagant stories that transgress the prescribed limits of the South thus coexist with stories that erect or cement those same limits, or indeed redraw them in favor of the few and to the detriment of the many. In short, this “Dream of the [South]” is partial - incomplete and biased - and everywhere haunted by nightmarish reflections of its own making.

    No full text
International audienceThis article explores the transformations of cultural approaches in the didactics of French as a foreign language (DFLE) in France that took place in the last third of the 20th century, adopting a didactic, historical, and sociological perspective. It highlights a process of redefining the concept of culture and diversifying pedagogical methods. The article also emphasizes the transition from knowledge transmission-focused teaching to an approach centered on the interpretation and interaction with culture, notably through the inclusion of subjectivity in cultural data analysis, the adoption of reflective approaches, and an increasing focus on otherness. The second part of the article connects these paradigm shifts with the pedagogy of multiliteracies proposed by the New London Group in 1996. By integrating multimodality, multilingualism, and multiculturalism, this approach aims to adapt teaching to learners’ realities. Finally, the article illustrates these transformations through an educational framework that fosters intercultural awareness via image-based rewriting, demonstrating the potential of multiliteracies to enhance the learning of French as a foreign language.

    No full text
International audienceThis article deals with on a completely unknown manuscript, the Descripción general del nuevo orbe de las Indias, written in Bogotá in 1652 by the judge Pedro González Güemes de la Mora (1595-1669). By retracing his career, examining the other texts he left behind and the relationship he had with books, I try to understand the type of power that was assigned to writing in the early modern Hispanic world. More specifically, the article proposes to rethink the way in which the order of books and the order of information were organized between the Iberian Peninsula and the Americas. The interest of Güemes’ case is that it shows both how the control of information could restrict the circulation and publication of books; and how, in the opposite sense, this control of infor- mation, through the keeping of administrative records and the policy of inquiries, motivated various writing practices covering natural history, moral history, religious history and law. In this respect, the manuscript book of Pedro Güemes bears witness to the permanence, in the middle of the 17th century, of the model of the “description of the Indies” devel- oped in the previous century and in which colonization gave priority to the pen rather than the blade.

On Islands and Deserts: Algerian Appropriations of the World

    No full text
International audienceThis essay revolves around three post-colonial Algerian novelists: the bilingual Rachid Boudjedra, the Arabophone Tahar Ouettar, and the Francophone Tahar Djaout. These writers embody the plurilingualism of the Algerian literary field, and although they are usually studied separately, like self-contained islands, they were actually good mutual acquaintances in Algiers. While the unequal structure of the literary world impacts peripheral writers, I argue, they appropriate the world through the lens of their own significant geographies, which are here studied at regional and local scales. I demonstrate that literary forms that could be said to be directly imported from Paris are in fact sometimes mediated by their circulation in the Arab world, and they are always used in very specific ways within the competitive literary field. With two consequences. First, they become not just slogans of “modernity” but genuine literary practices enabling the writers to subvert local hierarchies. Second, the linguistic inequalities structuring relations between the writers of the same field may be alleviated and give way to a surprising circulation, in particular from the Arabophone to the Francophone side of the field. Finally, I argue that these writers appropriate the world in their own desert novels by defining their own transnational audiences, and challenge Algerian national identity by inscribing it in a transnational geography
