    No full text
International audienceThe objective of this work is to study genericity as expressed by passive verbs and deverbals in institutional discourse. This research is based on a corpus of data collected from the University Hospital Center of Orleans (CHU-d’O). We will demonstrate how the use of the passive voice in different forms contributes to making communication addressed to users of this public space more impersonal and detached.

Entrevista

    No full text
Ela é a cineasta militante do século XX?

    No full text
National audienceThe film "Le Tour de la France par deux enfants", inspired by G. Bruno's famous textbook of the same name and directed by Louis de Carbonnat, was produced by Pathé Consortium Cinéma in 1923. The map, animated or still, allows the viewer to follow the journey of the two young people from Lorraine. Highlighting French landscapes and trades, the film has a precise documentary and educational framework, with maps serving as the main plot thread. Some of the open-air, industrial, craft and everyday scenes recorded by Pathé before 1920 are reused in this fictional film, offering another cartography, that of the circulation of these images.

Wrangling words in Wallacea: Assumptions and fallacies in the linguistic history of eastern Indonesia

    No full text
International audienceKeynote speech held at 17th Conference on Austronesian and Papuan Languages and Linguistics, Cologne, 23 July 2025. This talk examines, and questions, some persistent traditions in the study of the linguistic history of Wallacea. Over several thousand years, Wallacea―the area of eastern Indonesia and western New Guinea―has been a zone of intense contact and exchange between groups of different linguistic affiliations, fuelled by trade and migration. Nonetheless, many of the ideas about the linguistic history of Wallacea have been formed in isolation from other disciplines concerned with the human past, such as history, archaeology and genetics, and are discordant with them. In this talk, I present the results of recent work into loanwords across Linguistic Wallacea and examine how these impact our understanding of the region

L’Epistola ad Kolybam di Isacco Argiro. Un’edizione critica

    No full text
International audienceThe article contains a critical edition, with an annotated translation, of Isaak Argyros’ Epistola ad Kolybam, a short text of geometric metrology characterised by a complex textual tradition. The edition is preceded by an outline of the context in which the work was written. Two appendixes contain the metrological excerpts that follow the Epistola ad Kolybam in one of the two branches of the manuscript tradition and the diagrams associated with the work in representative witnesses of these two branches.L’articolo presenta un’edizione critica dell’Epistola ad Kolybam di Isacco Argiro, un breve scritto di metrologia geometrica dalla tradizione manoscritta complessa.

    No full text
International audienceThis contribution offers a heuristic and reflexive look at the joint preparation, on a self-funded basis, of two diplomas with apparently opposed but strong symbolic values: a vocational aptitude certificate in cookery and a doctoral thesis in political science. In some ways, the two practices are related worlds, with strong norms and symbols, powerful imaginary worlds and patronising figures; they also reflect intimate issues and a particular social position. By building bridges between training in social science research practices and cooking, this article also highlights what these practices say about the self - or at least what is shown about it - and makes a modest contribution to the sociology of the entanglements between professional and personal worlds.

An Austronesian-type voice system in an Amazonian isolate? Comparing Movima and Tagalog

    No full text
International audienceThe paper discusses some typologically rare structural similarities between Movima, a South American isolate, and the Austronesian language Tagalog. Both languages have a symmetrical voice system, and in both languages verbs and nouns are syntactically nearly equivalent. For Tagalog, it has been argued that the system is due to a basically equational sentence pattern with a nominal predicate (the "nominalist hypothesis"), and this explanation is also plausible for Movima. However, in contrast to some accounts of Austronesian languages, there is no evidence of a nominalizing origin of the Movima voice markers, which would help to explain the use of verbs in nominal domains. The article shows that the description of small, understudied, and even isolate languages is necessary to realize that some grammatical patterns may not be as uncommon as one may think, and can help to refine the ideas conceived about the better-known linguistic systems.

    No full text
International audienceThe most ancient Germanie findings on the southern coast of Crimea are dated back to the late Roman period (the necropoleis of Ay-Todor and Chatyr-Dag). However, the Goths are attested by written sources only from the sixth century. We know that, at the time of Justinian, these Goths were allied with the Eastern Roman Empire andwere Orthodox Christians. We know, thanks to Procopius of Caesarea, that the empire erected two fortresses on the coast, as strongholds of Byzantine power: this same Gorzuvites and Alouston ( today's Gurzuf and Alushta). Recent salvage excavations carried out by the Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the first of these sites have revealed a medieval settlement ( with a church and a necropolis) of the seventh-thirteenthcenturies. This site has all the typical features of the Byzantine civilization, in its material culture, its funerary customs, and its architecture. This testifies to the 'Byzantinization' and deep Christianization of the Goths in Crimea during the seventh and eighth centuries.
