    No full text
This dissertation explores the spatial practices through which sexual and gender minorities navigate a restrictive legal and social environment to carve out a place within the city of Beirut. It aims to capture the everyday territorialities of these populations across multiple scales, ranging from the urban fabric to neighborhoods, specific sites, and embodied experiences, to unpack the mechanisms that shape a conditional “right to the city”.Methodologically, the research draws on a qualitative approach grounded in eleven months of fieldwork conducted in Beirut between 2021 and 2023. Semi-structured interviews with 95 participants form the core of the study, offering insights into their practices across the city’s diverse spaces. Interviews are complemented by participant observation and mental mapping, fostering a nuanced understanding of everyday dynamics and the affective bonds through which individuals connect with places.By foregrounding the mobilities and spatial strategies of sexual and gender minorities in a Middle Eastern metropolis, this dissertation contributes to renewing our understanding of how access to a normative public space is shaped by intertwined processes of inclusion and exclusion. It challenges certain assumptions in the literature by showing that the agency of these populations unfolds in multiple ways, through the continuous reinvention of practices of appropriation and spatial adaptation to resist the norms they face.

    No full text

Introduction to Special Issue Production, Trade and Governance: A New Definition of Organized Crime

    No full text
International audienceThis introduction presents a novel framework that distinguishes three activities of organized crime (OC): production (creating goods and services), trade (moving products and people), and governance (regulating markets and controlling communities). These activities require different skills and give rise to three different types of OC groups. To illustrate some of the points, I make references to the papers published in this Special Issue, on erotic fiction in China by Wang and Evelyn; on falsified medicines production and trade between Asia and Europe by Hamill; on drugs retail and gang control of a neighbourhood in Marseilles by Rodgers and Jensen; and the cocaine international distribution chain by Feltran

Ancient Genomics Reveals the Origin, Dispersal, and Human Management of East Asian Domestic Pigs

    No full text
International audiencePigs are the most commercially important modern livestock animal in East Asia. Numerous aspects of their domestication history remain unclear, however, including the geographic center of their domestication, their subsequent dispersal routes, and the emergence of phenotypic traits specific to domestic pigs. To address these questions, we generated 21 nuclear genomes and 23 mitogenomes from ancient domestic pigs and wild boar from 5,800 BCE to 1,300 CE across China. Our analyses of newly generated and previously published Eurasian suid genomes confirmed Northern China and eliminated Southwestern China as the domestication origin of modern East Asian pigs. Following their association with people and the first appearance of black coat coloration, Northern Chinese domestic pigs dispersed alongside Yellow River millet farmers to the Yangtze River Basin and Southwestern China, which they admixed with local wild boar. A genome-wide loss of diversity and signatures of inbreeding in ancient Northern pigs may have been the result of intensified human management as early as 3,000 BCE. Our results reveal the geographic and temporal origins and subsequent dispersal and admixture of pigs in China, mirroring human migration and agricultural development history

    No full text

    No full text
The objective of this dissertation is to describe, subsequently to understand and to explain, the evolution of cohabitation among same-sex couples in Europe since the early 2000s, in connection with the legal, social, and demographic changes of recent decades. To this end, it draws on two harmonized European data sources: EU-SILC and EU-LFS. The research is structured around three main axes. The first, primarily descriptive, examines the increase in the proportion of cohabiting same-sex couples across European countries. It aims not only to provide a comprehensive overview but also to address the methodological challenges associated with identifying and measuring these couples. The second axis focuses on the changing sociodemographic characteristics of same-sex couples, particularly exploring the hypothesis of a gradual convergence with the profile of different-sex couples. Finally, the third axis investigates the interplay between legislative contexts, attitudes toward homosexuality, and the likelihood of living in a same-sex couple.

    « The Babylon of Brussels : Visibilisation d'un scandale, 1618-1637 »

    No full text
International audienceIn 1894 and 1898, two publications provided access to the untold history of two of the first exiled convents: the Benedictines of Brussels, the first monastic institution to be re-established after its dissolution, and its affiliate in Ghent. These texts were edited by nuns who were direct descendants of Brussels and Ghent and published by their private presses. It was through these confessional publications that English nuns of the modern period made their first foray into history, before becoming the subject of more scientific academic studies. In these memoirs, the work of the editors helps to shape the image of the communities and construct their version of their memory heritage, which... does not always correspond to the history that we discover when we consult not the manuscripts of the convents but those of the ecclesiastical archives (i.e., of the bishops who are responsible for disciplining them). Making the history of these convents visible involves implementing specific strategies: what should be revealed? And when is it appropriate to do so
