"He will bless those who fear Hashem, small and great alike (Ps 115,13)": Righteous and Wise Jewish Children in Josephus, Rabbinic Sources and Inscriptions from Rome

    No full text
International audienceTraditionally, children are not associated with wisdom in Jewish thought like in other ancient cultures. This idea is best expressed in the famous verse of Qohelet: childhood and youth are vanity (Qohelet 11,10). As a matter of fact, wisdom belongs to mature people and implies the knowledge of the Law, something that is not required from a child. In contrast with this, children are described as being heḇel (הבל), which means ‘breath’ but also ‘vanity, something that is insignificant and foolish’. Nevertheless, at the same time, the Talmud Bavli (bSanh 119b) quotes the opinion of Resh Lakish after Rabbi Yehuda haNasi according to which it is precisely only because of the hāb̲el of schoolchildren that the world exists. This statement shows the ambivalent role of children in Jewish society while emphasising children’s innocence and the idea as well that children symbolise the future of the Jewish people, for they shall inherit its legacy and keep going on holding tight on Jewish values. In the same spirit of Resh Lakish’s opinion, in some peculiar cases, ranging from the Second Temple period to Late Antiquity, we find children who prove to be individuals, almost exclusively boys, impressively gifted for their young age, thus depicted as mature and wise like adults and recognised as ṣaddîqîm ( צדיקים )

The island of Corsica underwent important socio-economical upheavals between the Bronze and the Iron Age (2000-200 BCE), including the appearance of fortified habitats, the evolution of megalithism, the development of metallurgy and the intensification of trade in the Mediterranean. In a context of demographic growth, these dynamics reflect the increasing complexity of Corsican agro-pastoral societies and the resulting environmental implications, which remain scarcely documented due to the shortage of archaeobotanical data. The analysis of plant macroremains (charcoal, seeds and fruits) from five archaeological sites, occupied between c.1600 and 100 BCE allows us to propose an image of the subsistence economy of human communities and their social-environmental interactions during this period. In addition to the classic anthracological and carpological analyses, we have also applied and developed a quantitative eco-anatomical approach to the wood of the strawberry-tree in order to recreate the physiognomy of plant communities and the impact human activities had on their structure. Results obtained reveal the existence of forest formations dominated by ericaceous species, during the Neolithic (around 5700 BCE); during the Bronze Age, these are replaced by the maquis and evergreen oaks, as a result of human activities, while in the highlands, less human pressure results in the predominance of deciduous oaks. Agriculture remains based on polyculture, including cereals, legumes and flax, associated with the gathering of wild fruits, particularly acorns. New plants are introduced during the Bronze Age (common millet) and the Second Iron Age (domesticated grapevine), testifying to the integration of the island in the Mediterranean economic networks; however, the island keeps its own agricultural model, different from that of the neighboring Tyrrhenian regions. Archaeobotanical data reveal a mixed economy, based on a flexible and resilient agro-silvo-pastoral system, profiting from all available resources, which reflects the long lasting adaptability of local protohistoric populations to the environmental constraints of the island.

    No full text
International audienceTerritorial sovereignty and cartography are closely linked. Historically, mapmaking has accompanied, and even anticipated, the construction of nation states. However, recent developments, combined with the digital revolution, are profoundly changing this relationship. Access to new sensors (GPS) and new data (satellite imagery), the involvement of new players (tech giants), and the emergence of new tools (virtual globes) are complicating the situation. A double deregulation is now underway: from the bottom up, through community initiatives that are attempting to draw up their own maps, and from the top down, notably through multinational companies that are actively engaged in this field of activity. This dual movement seems to be paving the way for a form of cartographic post-sovereignty. We propose to analyze the underlying political mechanisms.

    No full text
International audienceMusicians have long been associated with the myth of the “tortured genius”, but their psychological suffering is now being analysed in the context of overwork, precariousness and stage pressure. With factors such as performance stress, alcohol or psychotropic drug use, gruelling tour schedules and overexposure on social media, their mental health appears fragile. Although awareness is growing, implementing effective prevention and support measures is crucial to ensuring sustainable careers.

    No full text

The short-lived national-socialist Arrow-Cross government in Hungary.: Imported fascism vs. local conservatism?

International audienceThe short-lived national-socialist Arrow-Cross government in Hungary Imported fascism vs. local conservatism? The short-lived national-socialist Arrow-Cross government in Hungary Building Dictatorships under Axis Rule CatherineHorel Thischapter examines the context of the German occupation of Hungary. The first period, from 19 March to 15 October 1944, is characterized by an illusory attempt of the ruling elite, at the top of which stands Admiral Horthy, to prevent the Nazis from interfering too much in the internal affairs. This leads to the deportation of the majority of the Jews from the provinces at the hands of the local authorities. In the meantime, the fascist ideology already present in military circles gains ground while Horthy and his government seek a way out of the war (kiugrás) and ask for an armistice with the Soviet Union. This move provokes the intervention of the Germans and the rise to power of the Arrow Cross fascist party that rules the country until 4 April 1945; its leader Ferenc Szálasi becomes Prime Minister of an occupied country that is disintegrating as the Red Army enters it. The paper deals with the question of the nature of the Horthy regime and its relations to fascism as well as to the German occupation, a topic that is still problematic today for Hungary, which is still in need of Vergangenheitsbewältigung.</p

Des enjeux contemporains de la cohabitation culturelle. L’incommunication en question

    No full text
International audienceCultural cohabitation, a global and political issue, remains little explored by the scientific community, particularly in information and communication sciences. This contribution proposes to update the questions linked to this notion, by integrating the notion of incommunication, considered not as a fail but as an essential object for understanding the dynamics at work in intercultural interactions. Using an ethnographic approach, this research enhances the definition of cultural cohabitation as a process of incommunication, in which people from different cultures meet and interact, while recognizing and respecting their different ways of being sensitive to the world.

    No full text
International audienceThe translation of the noun ἑταίρα, whose originalmeaning is ‘female companion’ or ‘female friend’,varies enormously. There are more than a dozenFrench translations of the term, which is often automaticallytranslated as ‘courtesan’, in addition to theuse of the transliteration hetaira or the adaptation ofthe French word, hétaïre. If we take a look outside ofacademic usage, we can find other terms similar to‘girlfriend’: copine, petite amie, chérie, etc. However, none of these solutions is satisfactory, nor does itreflect the wealth of uses of the word in the sourceliterature. The aim here is to identify the most commonly-used terms and to examine their relevancein the light of the Greek sourcesand their context. While it is usuallynecessary to go beyond transliteration, especially at a time whenancient texts are being read lessand less in their original language, there is a risk of failing to grasp thenuances needed to understand theconcept, and sometimes tendingtowards caricature.

    No full text
International audienceTraditional qualitative methods in geography offer a wide range of tools for conducting empirical research. However, they are not always well suited to the roughness of the field, which may stem from a specific socio-political and security context, as well as from the situations and expectations of the populations under study. Researchers may therefore encounter methodological, scientific, and ethical constraints. Drawing on photographic methods - namely photovoice and photo-elicitation - this article examines how the methodological hybridisation implemented in Bogotá makes it possible to reconcile ethical concerns with scientific rigour in fieldwork.
