This thesis focuses on the effects of metropolisation on the development of urban movements in France. Although metropolises are often regarded as post-political or adhocratic spaces, certain mobilisations against urban projects shift their spatial and political scale by targeting the metropolis as both the focus and framework of their actions. These movements contribute to the production of new metropolitan frameworks and adapt their collective action strategies to the metropolitan context. The study of six mobilisations against urban projects across the metropolises of Nantes, Grenoble, and Bordeaux allows for the identification of the institutional, political, and activist characteristics unique to each metropolis, which either facilitate or constrain the scaling up of these movements. This shift in scale is explained by the existence of a metropolitan activist milieu, as well as metropolitan political opportunity structures that are conducive to the rescaling of these mobilisations. In this way, we demonstrate how the metropolises of Nantes, Grenoble, and Bordeaux provide differentiated conditions for the emergence of the rescaling of the movements under study.
“Idol-houses” or “abodes of God”? Delhi’s non-Muslim places of worship as portrayed in two mid-19th and early-20th-century Urdu works
From the mid-19th century till well into the second quarter of the 20th century, Delhi’s topography underwent a significant metamorphosis, as the ailing Mughal dynasty (1526-1858) finally came to an end and British rule was established over India. Several edifices in the capital Shahjahanabad (Old Delhi), symbols of former imperial authority, were damaged, desecrated, or demolished, and the city’s landscape was steadily dotted with structures of a more utilitarian nature, in keeping with the proclaimed objectives of the colonial government. These changes are evoked in two voluminous Urdu works composed during those years of transition, Syed Ahmad Khan’s Asar al-sanadid and Bashir al-din Ahmad’s Waqiyat-i Dar al-hukumat Dilli. A notable feature of these accounts is their portrayal of non-Muslim religious sites, the historical circumstances in which they came into existence, the legends and beliefs associated with them, and the rituals performed within their precincts. I shall, in my talk, demonstrate how the narrative style and the linguistic elements employed in this discourse differ substantially from those found in some of the official Persian-language court chronicles composed during the heyday of Mughal rule. Unlike the latter, which often summarily censured non-Muslim places of worship as dens of vice and errant behaviour, deserving to be wiped out, the later Urdu works adopt a more deferential attitude while describing Delhi’s temples and churches
International audienceThe Epic, from Nation to World. War and Exile in the Modern and Contemporary Reception of Dante · The Hegelian conception that links the epic to the foundation of nations seems all the more appropriate in the case of the Commedia since it is precisely during the Risorgimento process that this book is invested in Italy with a completely new authority. But the nineteenth century Italian epicization seems to take shape starting from a reduction of the metaphorical and spiritual dimensionof the war in Dante’s poem. On the other hand, the great theme associated with spiritual warfare, the theme of the journey of the soul, is in turn the occasion for a reading that, starting also from the use of Dante’s biography, erects the Commedia as a model of an epic of the exile that inspires not only Italians, but various transnational communities, from the nineteenth century to the present day.anima, è a sua volta occasione di una lettura che, partendo anche dall'uso della biografia di Dante, erige la Commedia a modello di un'epica dell'esilio che ispira non solo gli italiani, ma diverse comunità transnazionali, dall'Ottocento fino ai nostri giorni.</div
Certain words spoken in class or teachers' attitudes can lastingly harm students without necessarily being perceived as violence. Researchers examine this blind spot of the educational institution, which questions classroom management practices and teacher training. This article analyses the phenomenon of ordinary educational micro-violence, its mechanisms of normalisation, and proposes, as a counterpoint, the development of educational micro-attentions that foster social bonds and academic success.
International audienceThis article aims to provide an overview, through the journal Pratiques, of the practices and theories that have transformed French language teaching of the past 50 years. It traces and analyzes the evolution of the discipline’s components. It focuses particularly on the teaching of literature and literary reading, as well as on the teaching and learning of writing, and briefly addresses grammar, oral and vocabulary. The study also examines the emergence of didactics in relation to pedagogy and the main concepts debated within french language didactics in connection with other didactics disciplines.

Scrap metal dealers and the formation of a guild-like organization in Lagos, Nigeria
This article looks at the formation of structures of collective organizing among Lagos’ metal scrap dealers since the early 2010s. While the development of their activities from the 1990s has been premised on the commodification of labor and secondary metals, scrap dealers have attempted to develop means to control labor competition, limit market volatility, and protect themselves from corporate (as well as public) encroachments. At the same time, the efforts at developing a monopoly over the trade have served the stabilization and intensification of inter-worker exploitation, reflecting the broader heterogenization of living conditions among Lagos’ popular classes. Rather than as a union, I argue the organization developed by metal scrap dealers is better accounted for as a guild-like organization. Indeed, at the same time as it integrates elements of union culture, its core features align with the historical forms of guilds in urban Nigeria, which dominated labor organizing until the mid-20th century. By tracing the history of Nigerian guilds, the article highlights their enduring relevance as an institutional repertoire from which urban workers borrow to counter pressing problems related to labor competition, capitalist encroachments and volatile commodity markets. Within a complexifying landscape of labor mobilization and industrial relations, guild-like institutions offer analytical leverage in accounting for the specific forms taken by worker organizing in contexts marked by high urbanization and long histories of municipal involvement in labor regulation
The Sociological Evolution of International Arbitration
International audienceThis chapter analyses the transformation of international arbitration from a discreet practice into a specialised field that has come to play a central role in the resolution of international business disputes. Adopting a sociological perspective, it argues that international arbitration has emerged as a credible alternative to national and international courts, and examines the roles of key figures and organisations in this evolution. The chapter analyses the division of labour among actors within the field, with specialised professionals whose involvement has grown and progressively replaced, albeit not completely, versatile actors. Additionally, it discusses the development of a 'culture of arbitration', rooted in institutional myths, such as party autonomy and neutrality, and highlights how the field integrates newcomers. By drawing attention to the interplay between traditional actors and new entrants, the chapter underscores the complex social dynamics that have shaped the global arbitration landscape over the past hundred years
