Entre Varignon et Grandi : une proposition leibnizienne sur les plus qu’infinis

    No full text
International audienceIn April 1712, Leibniz published a note in the Acta Eruditorum entitled: "Observation on the Fact that Ratios and Proportions Do Not Apply to Quantities Less Than Nothing." This text is famous for having initiated the quarrel with Jean Bernoulli over the logarithms of negative numbers. However, this fame has obscured some important aspects on which I intend to reflect in this study. The last lines of the article inform us that it was initially conceived as an intervention in a controversy that was raging at the time around the "more than infinite". This explains part of the title of Leibniz's article, often omitted when cited, yet significant: "on the true meaning of the infinitesimal method" (de vero sensu Methodi infinitesimalis). Indeed, if we consider his position not in relation to its aftermath, but in relation to its origin, we see that this article directly follows an intervention by Pierre Varignon published in the same journal, which itself responded to a work on the "infinities of infinities" published in 1710 by Guido Grandi

Vulnerability of the reef heritage: reflections from an interdisciplinary thematic school in the Western Indian Ocean

    No full text
International audienceSince 2014, the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD) has hosted three interdisciplinary thematic schools on the vulnerability of the reef heritage (VulPaRe) in the Western Indian Ocean. Taking a sustainability science approach, the schools aimed to build capacity, facilitate knowledge transfer, and foster collaboration among a variety of stakeholders involved in research and the governance of coastal resources. The latest VulPaRe school highlighted 1) the need to strengthen the role of social sciences in interdisciplinary studies, 2) the opportunities and threats of market-based mechanisms integrating conservation and ecological restoration, and 3) concerns of justice on the access to common resources. An improvement of this educational process would be to provide more guidance for dialogues with decision makers in these reef areas

Residential Stress and the Challenges of Care and Proximity: Green spaces in urban renewal

    No full text
International audienceThis article studies two social housing projects undergoing urban renewal, exploring intersections and compatibilities between actors' ideas of proximity: the Cité Émile Dubois -La Maladrerie, a 1980s-era working-class green city neighborhood in Aubervilliers, on the outskirts of Paris, and a residence (2020) with shared green space in the northern fringes of Bourges, a neighborhood with high levels of social housing. Using the notion of care, it gives a domestic spatial analysis to better understand proximity and women's roles as major participants in local associative actions and initiatives, emerging as a response to residential stress sparked by the uncertainties of urban renewal. We thus observe how care-takers occupy key positions and responsibilities in activist spheres, giving them legitimacy in their support functions or their involvement in association networks. We also explore how stakeholders, whether residents' associations or landlords, use the notion of proximity to oppose, take action and repair their situation. The ability to use individual, collective and green spaces at residents' leisure, as well as to create strong social bonds, expresses the search for well-being and a healthier habitat, where residents feel they are taking care of themselves.</div
