Color terminologies in Japhug and other Rgyalrongic languages

    No full text
International audienceThis paper deals with the expression of colors in Japhug and other Rgyalrongic languages. It shows that Rgyalrongic languages share a set of six basic color stative verbs, which are cognate in all subbranches of this subgroup. In order to express more specific colorations, derivation and compounding of basic color verbs can be used. Alternatively, color nouns borrowed from Tibetan and denominal stative verbs derived from them can serve to express some colors. Finally, ideophones and deideophonic verbs can convey intricate meanings related to hues and brightness, in combination with the basic stative verbs

Edisi Diplomatis Falak Budha: Sebuah Naskah Sunda Kuno Koleksi Royal Asiatic Society di London (Raffles Java 1)

    No full text
International audienceThis book reveals one of the thus far neglected intellectual heirlooms of the Old Sundanese tradition, namely the Falak Budha text preserved in the Royal Asiatic Society collection in London (RAS Raffles Java 01). This 317-page manuscript, donated by Lady Raffles in 1830, is a unique compilation of various languages and scripts from the Indonesian archipelago. Our focus is on the section of the text written in Old Sundanese mixed with Old Javanese, using a West Javanese style of Kawi script, and originating from Talaga (Majalengka, Cirebon). Although this manuscript was briefly mentioned by Thomas Stamford Raffles himself in the early 19th century—particularly the section discussing the twelve constellations, the positions of the dragons, and the good and bad qualities of the moon—its contents have never been studied in detail. Given its high cultural and historical value, as well as the limited attention it has received in research over the centuries, this book presents a complete transliteration of the Falak Budha text into Latin script. This is a crucial step to help preserve the Old Sundanese writing tradition and make this important text more accessible to a wider audience. The presentation of the Falak Budha not only expands the archipelago's philological database, but also opens the door to interdisciplinary studies, such as intellectual history, cultural history, and history of traditional sciences, with the hope of connecting the knowledge contained in this manuscript with similar traditions elsewhere in Java and in Bali.

THE TRANSLOCAL SHERPA FROM EVEREST MOUNTAIN REGION TO NEW YORK CITY: Senses of Belonging and Connecting in Migration

    No full text
International audienceThis chapter explores the translocal connectivity of the Sherpa community from the Everest region to Kathmandu in Nepal until New York City in the United States. Grounded in geography, the research is based on in-depth interviews and multi-sited fieldwork to examine Sherpas' transmigration and its impact on the environment and development of their native region. Sherpas are historical trans-Himalayan seasonal migrants and became more recently permanent transnational ones as they form a visible diaspora in New York City. This study reveals a high level of connection between Nepal and United States through financial, social and even environmental remittances engaged by “translocal sherpas.” To characterize the intricate connections between international migration and local transformation, three layers of networks have been identified: (i) the key role of sponsorship, (ii) the active association Sherpa kiydug and (iii) the intense use of digital media. Those physical and virtual ties transcend the boundaries of home and host countries, collectively forming a substantial aspect of “translocality.

    No full text

    No full text
International audienceBy drawing on a corpus derived from a social network platform and by analyzing discourse interactions, we demonstrate that the identity of the Vietnamese discursive being is constructed through its responsibility towards non-persons. The Vietnamese collective ethos, known as “họ”, provides the framework within which the liminal ritual of discourse interaction creates social bonding from absent beings. The discursive beings within the “họ” are thus defined as ethical entities.

The Unclassifiable Arctic. René-Yves Creston and his Boreal Representations: Ethnology, Art, Marine Studies, and Polar Visuals

Network in Canadian History & Environment | Nouvelle initiative Canadienne en histoire de l'environnement | niche-canada.orgA French scientist from the first half of the 20th century, polymath, and renowned artist, René-Yves Creston explored the polar waters of the north during various missions, whether military, scientific, or artistic in nature, but often a combination of all three (with J.-B. Charcot, P.-E. Victor, …). An unclassifiable figure and department head at the Musée de l'Homme in Paris, he was one of the pioneers in offering representations of the Arctic to both the general public and informed audiences. To do so, he sketched, drew, noted, recorded, collected, and painted both the natures and cultures of the Arctic. His prolific work can now be reread and revisited in light of the changes and transformations affecting these Arctic territories and their populations. This is the purpose of this publication: based on Creston's work, which illustrates the text, parallels are drawn with the contemporary era, demonstrating certain continuities, but also, of course, changes

    No full text
