From April 17, 1975 to January 7, 1979, the Khmer Rouge perpetrated a genocide in Cambodia that left an indelible mark on the Cambodian people. Literature and cinema came to an abrupt halt during this period. This thesis examines this “gap” in the history of these arts. The first part deals with the literary and cinematographic reconstitution of the history and memory of the genocide, not in terms of official and collective representation, but in terms of individual stories. What sense does this reconstitution have for the witness-writer or filmmaker? Does the plurality of their voices, which inscribes variation in filiation, influence the liberation of memory locked up in suffering, fear and censorship? Can literature and cinema take charge of a memory that history has not inscribed, and fill the “gap”? The second and third parts are devoted to the specificity of testimonial writing as a literary and cinematographic genre. I analyze the structure of literary and filmic narratives, and the literary and cinematographic processes at work. I show how literary and cinematic writings are modified by genocidal violence and its perception. I examine the notions of witness and testimony. In a final part, I identify the readers and viewers of these creations and analyze their reception, and consequently their perception of genocide.

Prédicats complexes verbaux en ginyanga (kwa)

    No full text
This thesis offers a description of verbal complex predicates in Ginyanga, a Kwa language spoken in Togo. It contains first-hand data collected in the field from 2019 to 2025. The description of verbal complex predicates is complemented by a grammar sketch and a cross-linguistic study based on the languages of the ComPLETE database. Besides a description of the semantic and structural properties of verbal complex predicates following the methodology of the ComPLETE project, the thesis offers a corpus-based analysis of verbal complex predicates that gives insights about their use in natural discourse and their structural status.

The Routledge Handbook of Eurolinguistics: Commonalities of (Post-)Colonial Varieties of European Languages: A consideration of Dutch, English, French, Portuguese and Spanish

    No full text
International audienceSeveral European national languages were spread beyond Europe due to the imperialist expansion of European states since the 14th century. The spread of Dutch, English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish and their development outside of Europe share interesting similarities and differences that have not yet received much systemic attention. In large part this is due to differences in research agendas. This contribution compares the nature, conditioning factors, and social and linguistic outcomes of these five expansionist histories and the research on them. The discussion outlines commonalities and important differences to set the stage for future investigations of this relatively neglected topic which has been much dominated by research and models based on the spread of English

Twentieth-Century Dayak Visitors to New Guinea: Cultural Interchange, Memories and Souvenirs, and Discordant Museum Artefacts

    No full text
International audienceLarge numbers of young Dayak men hailing from remote interior Borneo communities traveled to New Guinea throughout the twentieth century, under various circumstances mostly consistent with their own cultural traditions. Recent research among these men's home communities has brought to light memories and stories about New Guinea and its Papuan residents, as well as photographs and memorabilia, feeding by their evocative power the construction of alternative indigenous Dayak narratives contrasting with those available in Western written sources. In their New Guinea social encounters, Dayak travelers "traded culture", both material and immaterial, with Papuans. Scores of Papuan artefacts must have reached Dayak villages, from where they circulated across Borneo as trade goods, amulets, or souvenirs, some to be found today as "discordant" artefacts in museums' Borneo collections, subject to inquiries about their "biographies" (i.e., their origins and travel histories). The article finally Twentieth-Century Dayak Visitors to New Guinea Annali, Sezione orientale 85 (2025) 156-196 suggests the great interest of a "mirror" research focusing on Dayak cultural heritage, material or not, still dimly traceable among Papuan tribal communities.</div
