The (low) phylogenetic relatedness of Conative Animal Calls: The case of Mokpe and Oroko (Bantu Zone A)

    No full text
International audienceThe present article is dedicated to the documentation of conative animal calls (CACs) in Mokpe and Oroko (Bantu Zone A) and the analysis of the cognancy / phylogenetic relatedness of these constructions. The examination of original data demonstrates that the CAC categories in both languages comply with synchronic and diachronic tendencies characterizing CACs in the world's languages. Primary CACs closely match the prototype of CACs and can be regarded as its canonical instantiations; secondary CACs may violate the prototypical features, which is also regular from a typological perspective. Furthermore, the comparison of Mokpe and Oroko CACs reveals the low cognancy of CACs in the two languages. The greater similarity exhibited by primary tokens than is the case of secondary ones does not stem from shared ancestry, but is more likely due to parallel developments and the exploitation of fully motivated, typologically common strategies

    No full text

    No full text
International audienceThis article analyzes contemporary issues surrounding martial arts (budō) in Japanese secondary education, practiced both in school clubs (bukatsu) and as a mandatory PE discipline since 2012. The study reveals a multifactorial crisis in the club system, characterized by burnout among non-specialist teachers, unpaid work overload, demographic decline, and safety risks. Reforms initiated since 2020 aim to delegate supervision to external instructors, pool resources between institutions, and progressively transfer activities to local communities. Despite these pragmatic adaptations, the future of school budō questions their capacity to become critical spaces for civic education, moving beyond identity and performance issues to prioritize a reflective ethics of martial practice.

    Gizey onomatopoeias

    No full text
International audienceThis paper offers a first overview of onomatopoeias in Gizey, a languoid of the Masa branch of Chadic (Afroasiatic). Onomatopoeias are classified as a subset of ideophones, which include words, irrespective of word class (nouns, interjections, and adverbs), that depict sensory experiences. Like other ideophones, onomatopoeias show morphological operations. A remarkable feature of Gizey onomatopoeias is the prevalence of the CiC (Consonant-vowel /i/-Consonant) root structure. However, there does not appear to be any transparent CiC-meaning association. Tentatively, we argue that the CiC pattern is merely a morphological niche from which new onomatopoeias are modelled. Finally, we highlight other more potentially serious instances of sound symbolism in Gizey onomatopoeias

: Catholic Education and Its Transformations in Vietnamese Society (1930–1990): Issues, Resistance, and Reinventions

International audienceThis research traces the history of Catholic education in Vietnam between 1930 and 1990, in a country shaped by colonization, war, division, and eventually communist reunification. Inheriting the legacy of French missions (MEP and female religious congregations), Catholic education helped form a Christian and Francophone elite. During the 1930s to 1950s, despite rising nationalist tensions, Catholic institutions adapted by Vietnamese-izing their staff and maintaining educational continuity throughout the First Indochina War. After 1954, in non-communist South Vietnam, a “golden age” emerged: Catholic schools, high schools, seminaries, and universities flourished, often supported by international networks. After the fall of Saigon in 1975, schools were nationalized and Catholic education was officially dismantled. Yet a quiet reinvention took place—through catechetical instruction, parish-run kindergartens, and informal networks. The Đổi Mới reforms (1986) opened limited space for renewed activity, albeit under state control. Female congregations, missions in exile, and alumni played a vital role in preserving and transmitting this educational, cultural, and linguistic heritage. Catholic education thus stands as a site of resilience, a repository of Francophone memory, and a continuing actor in Vietnam’s educational landscape—often in tension with the state, yet still carrying the potential for future development.

    No full text
