Reframing Language Diversity in West Africa: Lessons from Bandiagara
No full textInternational audienceThe linguistic landscape of the Bandiagara Region in Mali challenges long-held assumptions in historical linguistics. At the center of this complexity lies Bangime, a language isolate that defies classification and reveals a deeper story of population history, multilingualism, and cultural resilience. In this talk, I present findings from the ERC-funded BANG project, which integrates comparative linguistics, ethnography, and (forthcoming) genomic research to explore how interdisciplinary data can reframe our understanding of migration, contact, and identity in the region. I argue that standard comparative methods developed in Indo-European contexts fall short in accounting for the linguistic convergence and divergence layers observable in West Africa. This calls for new frameworks, including that which we call the "Concept and Context" approach, which accommodates the region’s dynamic sociolinguistic realities. The talk highlights methodological innovation and the importance of working collaboratively across the disciplines to better represent those whose histories are too often obscured or misrepresented in scientific discourse
Mauritius between India, China and the world

Officially promoting non-alignment, it has developed a very pragmatic foreign policy which, while keeping close relations with the West and India, is open to cooperation with everyone, including China. Active in several regional organisations, having developed an international platform in financial and business services, Mauritius has become a gateway for investment in Africa. Its security concerns are limited, and it has a privileged security partnership with India. In that context, to enhance its influence in this country, China has focused on economic and cultural cooperation, avoiding challenging India’s position heads on. Nonetheless, its presence is more and more visible, leading both Mauritius and India to react. Other stakeholders as Japan, the European Union, France and the United States are also playing an active role, helping Mauritius strengthen its agency in this new great power game

No full textInternational audienceWe investigate here the linguistic opus of three French missionaries who contributed to the documentation of non-standard Sinitic languages between 1880 and 1940. These significant contributions, still poorly known in France, are those of: Léon Wieger (1856-1933, S.J.) posted in Hebei in North China, Henri Boucher (1857-1939, S.J.) posted in Shanghai, southeastern China, and Charles Rey (1866-1943, M.E.P.) posted in Guangdong, South China. The various editions and adaptations of the text A Guide to Kuan Hua will further take us into the surprisingly tightly integrated network of foreign language experts (French, with H. Boucher, but also Japanese, English, American, etc.) in China at the turn of the century.Nous présentons ici trois contributions francophones à la documentation de variétés vernaculaires de chinois entre 1880 et 1940, qui restent largement méconnues en France : celles de Léon Wieger (1856-1933, S.J.) au nord de la Chine, d’Henri Boucher (1857-1939, S.J.) à Shanghai, et de Charles Rey (1866-1943, M.E.P) au sud de la Chine. Les diverses éditions et adaptations de la Boussole nous permettent de plus d’entrevoir le réseau des acteurs « étrangers » (français, avec H. Boucher, mais aussi japonais, anglais, américains, etc.) mobilisés dans la documentation des langues sinitiques à la fin du xixe siècle en Chine

Friendship beyond death: Narratives from ancient China
No full textInternational audienceAbstract Friendship occupies the last place in the five social relations in the Confucian tradition, yet it plays an important role in Confucian writings. In this article, I discuss the notion of friendship that lasts beyond death from ancient China. I examine how the friendship between Bo Ya and Zhong Ziqi finds its continuation in that of Fan Shi and Zhang Shao, insofar as one of the two friends dies in both cases. These friendly bonds are tinged with a tragic tone and have fueled the imagination of the Chinese who sublimate or amplify them in all kinds of literary genres – poetry, theater, and novel – dating back to the pre-imperial period and to the Han Dynasty. All the authors underscore the faithfulness of these characters, which they consider to be the characters’ virtue. They also emphasize the spiritual link that transcends life and death. Based on the translation of these well-known and celebrated narratives, I intend to show how the exemplary nature of friendship is enhanced or mythologized, and how intertextuality has shaped the Chinese vocabulary itself in this regard
