Durational differences between homophonous va affixes and non-morphemic va in Bora (Northwest Amazon)
International audienceAcoustic differences between homophonous morphemes raise concerns for mainstream models of language production. But evidence for such differences so far comes almost exclusively from word final s in English. The current study analyzes homophonous va affixes and corresponding non-morphemic syllables in a corpus of Bora, an under-resourced and morphologically complex Amazonian language. Results from a statistical model that controls for final lengthening and other factors known to influence syllable duration indicate that non-morphemic vas are on average 8.2 ms longer than va affixes. This adds urgency to reconsidering the role of morphology in language production
Cette recherche est issue de l’appel à projet lancé en 2019 sur le thème : La déontologie des professions juridiques et judiciaires : le conflit d’intérêtsOften analyzed from the point of view of the legislation that has emerged over the last decade and the accompanying « deontological turnaround », the question of conflict of interest has rarely been considered from the point of view of the uses to which it is put, or from the angle of the difficult situations andcases in which it arises. With the aim of understanding this emerging area of professional and institutional practices, and taking stock of the emerging politics of conflict of interest, this study takes a two-pronged approach. The first, historical and sociological, examines the emergence of an area of deontological practices and reveals the diversity of uses made of the mechanisms (declaratory obligations, charters, deontological colleges, etc.) among those occupying these new deontological positions, within the Conseil d’État as well as in the legal profession. The second, casuistic and normative, is based on situations and cases of public-public or public-private cumulation, whether synchronic or diachronic, as documented in the press in the case of members of the Conseil d’État. Based on the legislative definition of conflict of interest given by the law of October 11, 2013, a typology of conflicts of interest is proposed, together with an analysis of the risks they pose to the reputation of impartiality of the administrative jurisdiction. In conclusion, the ambivalence and plasticity of the notion of conflict of interest are highlighted, leading us to propose the creation of a permanent, independent observatory of public- private mobility, equipped with the methodologies needed to grasp the issue.

SAGA: TRANSLANGUAGING AND SUSTAINABILITY: A Green Paper to Seed and Grow the Research Project
SAGA is a 5 year research project (2023-2028) to investigate and advance sustainability transitions across language and context. The project's goal is to advance more-than-English language capacity as an overlooked means to embed diverse cultural values within more effective sustainability strategies. For some, sustainable development is an international signifier of a greener, fairer world. For others, it is an empty signifier. The fact that English is the lingua franca of sustainable development discourse and policy is one barrier to the emergence of a cultural code of sustainability that is needed for a sustainability transition. Removing this barrier requires more than rough translation; it demands adequate interpretation, contextualization, and connections to communities in place – a process of translanguaging. With reflexive, observational and collaborative investigations in English, French, Finnish, Danish, and Indigenous languages, in different urban contexts, the SAGA research team will investigate the translanguaging processes that permit and inhibit the activation of sustainable cities in ways that hold cultural meaning. We aim to crack the lived coding of sustainable cities, as opposed to their global blueprints, by inquiring into the role of language in sustainability talk and sustainability interventions in monolingual, bilingual and multilingual contexts
The PAN Voiced Stops and Affricates
International audienceThis paper examines the fate in Formosan languages of the Proto-Austronesian voiced stop and affricate phonemes. It argues that two sets with different airstream mechanisms should be distinguished: an implosive set consisting of *b and *Z (in Ross’s notation), little subject to devoicing, and a plain-voiced set, prone to devoicing, comprised of the more retracted stops *D [ɖ] and *g [g], and two affricates *d [ʤ] and *z [dz]. Outside of lenitions, the plainvoiced set remains voiced only in the southern Formosan languages Paiwan, Puyuma, and Rukai. This general pattern is obscured in the modern languages by the widespread mergers affecting the coronals. In the present analysis, the Proto-Austronesian alveolar stop—implosive [ɗ]—is thought to be the phoneme symbolized *Z by Ross, not his *d, which I take to have been [ʤ]. This paper also argues that *D [ɖ], *d [ʤ], and *z [dz] became implosive in Bunun through merger with *Z; and that the more retracted articulation of /d/ compared with /t/ in Pazeh and Bunun comes from being ‘zombie implosives’, that is, plain-voiced sounds having evolved out of an implosive.Implosive
