Leveraging Speech LLMs for Audio-based Lexical Retrieval in Dictionaries: the Case of Audio Queries in WhatTCSay, a Dictionary app for the Teochew Language
National audienceThis study focuses on Query by Example -Spoken Term detection in low-resource scenarios. It reports on our experiments in building an audio-based query functionality for the diasporan Teochew dictionary WhatTCSay. This functionality enables users to retrieve dictionary entries without prior knowledge of the writing systems in Teochew, thereby facilitating language revitalization efforts within Teochew communities. To address the retrieval task, we explore: (i) a supervised ASR-based approach using pengʼim-to-pengʼim matching and a sinogram-to-sinogram matching methods, and (ii) a non-supervised method based on Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) for audio-to-audio matching. Retrieval performance is evaluated using recall at rank k. Results show that pengʼim-to-pengʼim matching achieves the best performance, followed by audio-to-audio matching. In contrast, sinogram-to-sinogram matching performs the worst.</div
Contemporary Pedagogical Innovation in Urdu Language Teaching :Theoretical Perspectives and Pedagogical Reflections
International audienceDespite Urdu’s formal recognition in India and its designation as the national language of Pakistan, the language has witnessed limited pedagogical development. Among Urdu speakers, there is a discernible shift toward English —a language that carries considerable social capital and serves as the primary medium of socioeconomic mobility in both countries. In addition, Urdu’s association as a secondary linguistic medium of Islam in South Asia has increasingly confined its primary function to religious domains. Existing instructional resources for Urdu remain largely outdated, with a strong orientation toward Muslim audiences. Although the early decades of the twenty-first century have introduced modest innovations in Urdu pedagogy aimed at broader and more inclusive constituencies beyond religious affiliation, Islamic cultural framing continues to exert a significant influence. Recent advancements include the emergence of digital platforms featuring conciseaudiovisual materials and mobile applications that provide lexical tools to support language learning

: Projeto GENgiBRe. “Relação com a natureza e igualdade de gênero. Uma contribuição à teoria crítica a partir de práticas e mobilizações feministas na agroecologia no Brasil”. Guia metodológico
Field research and its methodology are at the heart of the GENgiBRe project's knowledge construction and socialisation objectives. The Methodological Guide therefore constitutes an essential outcome of our project, which reflects our "research-action" approach and our feminist epistemology. The development of this Guide was based on important instruments already proven in the field of feminism and agroecology, such as the Sociobiodiversity Map, the River of Life, the Feminist Social Cartography and the Body-Territory, which were adjusted for the objectives of our project and completed by new instruments. Through this publication, we wish to continue this collective construction, making our Methodological Guide available to communities of researchers with converging interests.
Winter fishing and the winter of fishing: social-ecological mutations at work within the Finnic communities of the Baltic
International audienceThis presentation is based on ethnographic research carried out among various Finnic communities in the Baltic Sea watersheds. This long-term survey seeks to understand the interrelationships between human communities and their insular, coastal, marsh or riparian environments. In particular, it aims to decipher the changes at work affecting primary activities linked to the “wild”: gathering, gleaning, hunting, fishing...Winter is an ambivalent season in the multi-site field surveyed. First and foremost, it is a time for land-based activities, in preparation for the other seasons, when frost, ice and snow are absent (gear repairs, net raking, basketry practices, cutting down woody debris, etc.). But it is also the focus of a large number of hunting and fishing activities in aquatic environments, which take advantage of the cold season to target a particular species or territory, and, above all, the presence of ice. Contrary to popular belief, winter is just as important as any other season in community calendars. This season, the length of which varies according to multiple criteria, is historically a season of opportunity: hunters and fishermen accumulate few reserves, and predation is used primarily for immediate food needs. This became anchored in local cosmologies, through the sedimentation of thoughts and representations. We can observe practices that specifically target the winter season, and have adapted strongly to it.However, climate change, which is affecting this region in particular, is disrupting these historic community seasonal patterns. Coupled with other ongoing changes, notably socio-economic and political, the winter season now appears to be a season of uncertainty. These uncertainties are leading to a wide range of changes in practices, from abandonment or prohibition, through reorientation to emergence. The aim of this talk is to show what winter means from an ethno-historical point of view for the Finnic communities of these territories, but also, and above all, to decipher the changes underway. These changes, which are rapid and brutal, certainly lead to adaptations, but above all to the disappearance of practices. A “winter of fishing” can also be observed in the field, making the perpetuation of many ancestral local activities totally uncertain. But like any winter, a spring may follow: the aim is also to sketch out a few avenues of transformation in local societies, which may prove interesting to observe

Alexandria, how not to adapt ?
Coastal cities are particularly vulnerable to risks of marine submersion and must find ways to adapt. But public authorities still need to implement sustainable protection solutions
