No full textThis research evaluates the effectiveness of the intercomprehension approach for teaching French as a foreign language in the Andorran education system, a unique context where four Romance languages coexist — Catalan, Spanish, French, Portuguese. Based on 6h20min41s of participant observation at the Andorran Secondary School of Encamp (learners aged 12-15) and a survey of the seven teachers comprising the French department of this institution, the study reveals differential effectiveness across linguistic domains. The survey reveals teachers themselves embodying this interlinguistic navigation, exploiting the local Romance continuum — Catalan, Spanish, French, Portuguese. Intercomprehension proves highly effective for pan-Romance vocabulary (500 words) and transparent syntactic structures, but limited when facing opacity zones (French binary auxiliary system, vocalic prothesis). Analysis identifies a three-phase acquisitional progression (transferawareness-restructuring) and innovative pedagogical strategies: collaborative interlanguage, cognitive spatialization ("house of être"), systematic translinguistic mediation. The originality lies in articulating historical perspective (from Raynouard to contemporary European projects) with current empirical data. The Andorran experience demonstrates that intercomprehension constitutes a powerful pedagogical optimization lever but insufficient alone, requiring integration into comprehensive plurilingual didactics.Cette recherche évalue l'efficacité de l'approche intercompréhensive pour l'enseignement du FLE dans le système éducatif andorran, contexte unique où coexistent quatre langues romanes — catalan, espagnol, français, portugais —. S'appuyant sur 6h20min41s d'observations participantes à l'École andorrane d'enseignement secondaire d'Encamp (apprenants 12-15 ans) et une enquête auprès des sept enseignants composant le département de français de cet établissement, l'étude révèle une efficacité différentielle selon les domaines linguistiques. L'enquête révèle des enseignants incarnant eux-mêmes cette navigation interlinguistique, exploitant le continuum roman local — catalan, espagnol, français, portugais. L'intercompréhension s'avère hautement efficace pour le vocabulaire pan-roman (500 mots) et les structures syntaxiques transparentes, mais limitée face aux zones d'opacité (auxiliation binaire française, prothèse vocalique). L'analyse identifie une progression acquisitionnelle triphasique (transfert-conscientisation-restructuration) et des stratégies pédagogiques innovantes : interlangue collaborative, spatialisation cognitive (« maison d'être »), médiation translinguistique systématique. L'originalité réside dans l'articulation entre perspective historique (de Raynouard aux projets européens contemporains) et données empiriques actuelles. L'expérience andorrane démontre que l'intercompréhension constitue un levier d'optimisation pédagogique puissant mais non suffisant, nécessitant son intégration dans une didactique plurilingue globale
On Islands and Deserts: Algerian Appropriations of the World
No full textInternational audienceThis essay revolves around three post-colonial Algerian novelists: the bilingual Rachid Boudjedra, the Arabophone Tahar Ouettar, and the Francophone Tahar Djaout. These writers embody the plurilingualism of the Algerian literary field, and although they are usually studied separately, like self-contained islands, they were actually good mutual acquaintances in Algiers. While the unequal structure of the literary world impacts peripheral writers, I argue, they appropriate the world through the lens of their own significant geographies, which are here studied at regional and local scales. I demonstrate that literary forms that could be said to be directly imported from Paris are in fact sometimes mediated by their circulation in the Arab world, and they are always used in very specific ways within the competitive literary field. With two consequences. First, they become not just slogans of “modernity” but genuine literary practices enabling the writers to subvert local hierarchies. Second, the linguistic inequalities structuring relations between the writers of the same field may be alleviated and give way to a surprising circulation, in particular from the Arabophone to the Francophone side of the field. Finally, I argue that these writers appropriate the world in their own desert novels by defining their own transnational audiences, and challenge Algerian national identity by inscribing it in a transnational geography
