Internationalization strategies of business schools - how flat is the world?

    No full text
International audienceBusiness school strategy has become more complex than ever, especially regarding internationalization. Using different paths, experiencing failure and success, business schools have internationalized, attracting many of the international students who contributed $27 billion 2 to the US economy in 2014. Some business schools are global, training global managers, others are more focused on national markets. How do business schools strategize about internationalization? Can we use existing models to explain this process? Are internationalization and globalization similar? Using a comparative analysis of six case studies in the US and Europe, we found that the engine of internationalization influences its paths and outcomes. We contribute to the body of IB research by discussing how business schools strategize their internationalization toward uniformity or diversity under isomorphic pressures from accreditation bodies (AACSB, 2011) and rankings. The so-called Uppsala model should be 1 Acknowledgements: the authors would like to thank two anonymous and rigorous TIBR reviewers for their detailed and useful feedback, as well as Prof. Richard M. Sustainability issues in Corporate Social Responsibility and strategy : sustainable or temporary competitive advantage in today's dynamic environment ?

    No full text
International audienceThe chapter examines the sustainability issue in corporate social responsibility (CSR) and strategy, specifically in terms of sustainable or temporary competitive advantage in today's dynamic environment. Sustainable competitive advantage has traditionally been the key concept used by strategic management to explain a corporation's success. CSR contributes by developing a sustainable advantage, and is more and more considered as an opportunity and a way to develop a competitive advantage rather than as a cost. The CSR practices, as they gradually emerge, involve a higher degree of implicit forms of rules and policies. Corporations have to combine two different approaches: the maximization of short-term profitability demanded by shareholders, and the need to take into account growth over the longer term (stakeholders). CSR has an impact on value creation in the short and long term. In addition, it can be considered to be a core competency, aiming to achieve a sustainable rather than temporary advantage. Also, according to the chapter authors it can be considered to be a core competency, aiming to achieve a sustainable rather than temporary advantage. Also, according to the chapter authors, the discourses of sustainability all adopt a viewpoint of the acceptability, or otherwise, of sustainable development. Equally these discourses accept that sustainability is possible, but disagree about the circumstances in which it is possible and about the resultant level of economic activity

A Sedução da Comunicação Publicitária Francesa através do Meio

National audiencein this article, the use of Parisian urban furniture as a medium for communicating advertising is analyzed drawing from the perspectives of the audrillardian consumerism and the concept of Junkspace introduced by Rem Koolhaas. Three examples of advertising integrated into the city are presented and analyzed via-à-vis these theoretical frameworks. Three extensions of the Baudrillardian concept of seduction are proposed: i) the seduction through the sign of the familial, offered by the Grands Magasins’ shop-windows, ii) the seduction by integration, reached by the Morris column, and iii) the seduction by the ambition of belonging to a reference-group, incited by a panel-siding. The characterization of the embodiments of Junkspace into contemporary Paris, as well as a reflection on the subtle and spectacular seduction of consumption through the inevitability of everyday in this city, are then advocated. Adoption of low-cost energy efficiency measures in the tertiary sector—An empirical analysis based on energy survey data

    No full text
International audienceThis paper empirically explores factors driving the adoption of low cost energy efficiency measures in the tertiary sector which mainly consists of public and private services, trade, commerce and some small industries. The measures considered include switching off installations or lighting, managing energy use, and routinely considering energy efficiency for new purchases. Our statistical analysis employs single and multivariate probit models relying on more than 1500 observations from a recent representative survey of the tertiary sector in Germany. The findings suggest that the landlord-tenant dilemma holds for the adoption of all low-cost energy efficiency measures considered. They further imply that financial incentives such as higher energy prices accelerate the diffusion of low-cost energy measures. Our findings also provide some evidence that knowledge transfer from the mother company to a subsidiary enhances the diffusion of low-cost energy efficiency measures. Likewise, public-sector organizations are more likely to adopt energy management. By and large though, sectoral heterogeneity appears to have little impact on the adoption of low-cost energy efficiency measures

University Technology Transfer offices : the search for identity to build legimacy

    No full text
International audienceTechnology transfer offices (TTOs) are of strategic importance to universities committed to the commercialization of academic knowledge. Within the university, TTOs' relationship with academics and management is single agent-multiple principal. When two principals exist in an agency relationship, conflicting expectations can naturally arise. We explore how TTOs build legitimacy by shaping identity with university academics and management. In undertaking this research we draw on 63 interviews with TTO executives across 22 universities in the Ireland, New Zealand and the United States. We find that TTOs use identity-conformance and identity-manipulation to shape a dual identity, one scientific and the other business, with academics and management respectively. We show how this combination of identity strategies is ineffective for legitimizing the TTO. We propose that TTOs' identity shaping strategies are incomplete and need to incorporate a wholly distinctive identity to complement and reinforce preliminary legitimacy claims made through conformance and manipulation. We discuss the potential implications of these findings for scholars, TTO executives and university management

National audienceThe future of independent work will partly depend on its subjective and affective conditions. This paper proposes the affective portraits method as way to inform prospective exercises including those dimensions. Inspired by the turn-to-affect, interviews, with an adapted distribution of the sensible, give raise to portraits that highlight some affective problematics as potential weak signals of future independent work condition.L'avenir du travail indépendant dépendra en partie de ses conditions subjectives et affectives.

Telemedicine has dissolved the typical singular doctor-patient syndrome. Its asynchronous nature and the explosion of the quantified self have changed the traditional model of delivering care. The ultimate question about the procedure of reimbursing telemedical care is about to be seized by new stakeholders

International audienceNowadays, more and more companies have huge masses of data from multiple sources (online transactions, traces from website navigation, social networks, sensors, etc.). These data are moreover heterogeneous and volatile. This large amount of data offers tremendous opportunities in terms of knowledge and customer relationships. However, their transformation into actionable knowledge poses important challenges both technically and ethically. Through a state of the art, this paper aims to highlight the issues and challenges of Big Data for marketing.
