Management, and what HR can learn from it
International audienceSlow Management is defined by the Financial Times as having three key notions. The first is that employees require meaning and recognition, second is that ‘Slow’ should not be taken literally: “It is about understanding that taking the time to meet your team is about contributing to their well-being and thus, contributing to the performance of the business as a whole
Experimenting in the unknown : lessons from the Manhattan project
Experimentation is of paramount importance in innovation. On this topic, the seminal book of Prof. Thomke entitled “experimentation matters” has received a warm welcome from innovation scholars and practitioners. Unfortunately, the companies still have major difficulties to organize experimentations in situation of high uncertainty. This research aims at verifying the validity of Thomke’s principles in such situation. For doing this, this research studies the exemplary experimentations carried out by the Manhattan Project to create the first implosion type fission bomb. Our findings show that the Thomke’s organizational principles by are ill adapted to manage experiment in the unknown. In particular, the lack of theoretical knowledge, the crisis of the scientific instruments and the absence of pre-established organizations are critical aspects. Finally, research avenues for experimenting in the unknown are formulated.L’expérimentation joue un rôle fondamental dans le processus d’innovation.
The human resource issues and their impact on firm growth in small e-businesses in China
International audienceThis paper studies the human resource issues in small e-businesses in China through questionnaire survey about online shoppers and current employees in e-commerce companies, interviews with human resource managers who are now working in successful e-commerce firms and those who have worked before in the broken e-business websites. E-businesses inevitably confront with the human resource dilemma, especially when they rely on high-quality service for differentiation. In order to deliver infinite scalability, these firms need to reduce their dependence on human resource. However insufficient human resource investment impedes the firm growth. Analyzing how these issues impede the firm growth, by developing the case study of comparing two Chinese B2C websites, Jindong, one of the leading B2C websites, and Vipshop, one of the small e-businesses struggling to "tip" in the market, recommendations are given to small e-businesses to improve their human resource and promote the firm growth
The impact of RFID on pharmaceutical supply chains : India, China and Europe compared
International audienceThis paper analyzes the impact of Radio Frequency Identification (RIFD) on pharmaceutical supply chains in Asia and Europe, focusing particularly on India, China, France and the UK. As the global pharmaceutical industry is rapidly expanding due to the entry of generic drugs coupled with the prevalence of business process outsourcing activities among companies there is a heightened risk of counterfeit drugs becoming more easily available in the market place. The application of RFID, both as a security measure and as a device for optimizing supply chain efficiency, will bring about a significant change in the functioning of the industry's distribution network. The present paper discusses several applications of RFID in regard to both the Asian and European pharmaceutical supply chains and points to its potential use as a Business Intelligence (BI) tool. RFID, used as a modern BI tool, provides several advantages to the enterprise, among the most prominent of which is the transformation of raw RFID data into vital business information. Through this mechanism a company can be better positioned to efficiently analyze customer needs and buyer behavior, as well as forecast sales and improve potential profit margins
How task instructions impact the creativity of designers and ordinary participants in online idea generation
International audienceOnline idea generation platforms are increasingly used to generate ideas of innovative products. Crafting the problem statement carefully is a key factor of success, however, the current literature remains limited concerning what kind of task instructions should be used to increase the quality of ideas in online idea generation. This research examines three different types of task instructions. The unbounded task instructions allowed participants generating the ideas they wish without any restriction. The suggestive task instructions indicate domains of ideas that are innovative. The prohibitive task instructions indicate domains of ideas that are not innovative. The impact of these three types of task instructions on creative outcomes is compared through an empirical study on eYeka, a global online idea generation platform. Based on logit models, we found that the task instructions have a significant impact on the creativity of participants. Our result shows that prohibitive task instructions enable the production of the most original ideas whereas suggestive task instructions favor the production of the most feasible and valuable ideas. Unbounded task instructions are mostly found to be inefficient. The implications for the management of online idea generation communities are discussed. 2 " The formulation of a problem is often more essential than its solution, which may be merely a matter of mathematical or experimental.

Contextualizing knowledge sharing strategy : the case of an international organization in the area of development assistance
International audienceThis paper proposes an operational evaluation grid which helps Organizations to determine the perception employees have about the degree of alignment between their Information System (IS) supporting knowledge sharing and different organizational culture contexts. Relying on this perception, Organizations can: (1) analyze barriers to a successful use of information system functionalities for greater efficiency of knowledge sharing and (2) identify appropriate IS functionalities they should invest on to increase the dynamic of knowledge sharing. A case study illustrates the use of our evaluation grid and the implications of this work are finally discussed at the end of this paper
International audienceThe objective of this study is to elaborate a technical model of enforcement of IFRS to be used by the regulators. The methodology adopted is qualitative, based on an empirical observation of the financial information oversight system of the AMF in France. Our model has been developed following the risk-based approach which consists of assessing the risk of non-compliance with IFRS, in order to focus the review on areas which are more likely to contain a risk of non-compliance. The model was then tested in issuers’ reference documents by the controllers of the AMF. The results indicate that if some factors had been proved difficult to be assessed at the regulatory oversight level, the model constitute a relevant methodological tool which helps to identify important areas of non-compliance with IFRS.
