    No full text
International audienceThe development of emerging technologies demands a rapidly expanding knowledge base and intensive collaboration across organizational, institutional and cultural borders. This book is the first of its kind to focus on the management of key emerging technologies and their social and economic impact in Europe. Split into four parts, across seventeen chapters, the scholars offer multiple levels of analysis concerning the management of emerging technologies across various sectors ranging from nanotechnology, renewable energy and cloud computing to synthetic biology and particle therapy for cancer.<br/

    No full text

Financial institution network and the certification value of bank loans

    No full text
International audienceSocial networks and reputation are believed to play important roles in mitigating informational frictions related to financial intermediation, in particular bank lending. We investigate the effect of the network and reputation of financial institutions on the certification value of bank loans using data on syndicated loans to European companies. We find that the presence of more central and reputable leaders in a syndicate substantially increases the stock market's reaction to loan announcements. This certification value is reinforced when informational frictions are more important, but vanishes in case of severe disruptions in the functioning of financial markets, such as during the financial crisis of 2008

Revisiting Sun Tzu at the information overload age for applied intelligence education

    No full text
National audienceThe Asian Sun Tzu's 'Art of War' has been studied for Intelligence Education with the idea of 'Foreknowledge' in particular. In substance the idea of 'Observe your environment and you will win your battles' has been used as a cornerstone of the discourses and practices in Intelligence for Business, Law Enforcement and National Security. In the Occident, the approach is rather based first and foremost on modelisation rather than on the Asian potential of the situation. Today, our resources are scarce and we suffer from an information explosion. So the question is: At the Information Overload Age, how shall we inform ourselves and our leaders? We will present the major criteria to select the modelisation approach and the potential of situation approach, as well as a combination of methods along the continuum between the two

International audienceThe objective of this paper therefore, is to develop a conceptual model and the instruments of measurement in order to be able to identify the background regarding mobile penetration in Africa. This research is based on the theories of acceptation and utilization of technologies and the facilitating conditions related to the countries. Based on this model, a comparative study was carried out between Mali and Senegal, which allowed us to better identify the factors and those that significantly influence the penetration of mobile telephony in Africa.L'objectif de cet article est d'élaborer un modèle conceptuel et des instruments de mesure à même de cerner les antécédents de la pénétration du mobile en Afrique.

Men and women in IT entrepreneurship : consolidating and deconstructing gender stereotypes

    No full text
FNEGE 4, ABS 2International audienceInformation technology (IT) plays a major role in entrepreneurship as a source of innovation and for the development of e-business activities. Recent initiatives, namely in Europe and the USA, encourage women to develop IT and web businesses. However, the gender imbalance remains, mainly due to persistent stereotypes (Clayton et al., 2012; Gupta et al., 2013). The main purpose of our research is to investigate whether stereotypes concerning gender and IT entrepreneurship are perpetuated or undermined amongst generation Y. Assuming that social differences between women and men are socially constructed, we adopted a constructionist and structurationist view to explain how gender stereotypes are broken down or reinforced. We conducted empirical research with male and female students participating in an entrepreneurial competition for entry into a business incubator. Our study suggests that subtle gendering processes, which we term 'gender stereotyping moves', can affect the stability of gender stereotypes. A typology of consolidation and deconstruction moves is provided, and two illustrations of structuring moves in practice are discussed

Technology licensing decisions : a real options perspective

    No full text
International audienceAs part of the growing trend toward Open Innovation, the market for technology has seen an unprecedented growth over the last decades. Yet, empirical studies in this area remain underdeveloped, and the decisions made by firms regarding technology licensing are not well known and understood. In this paper, we argue that the real options (RO) approach, which draws from financial options theory and is particularly adapted to uncertain environments, can be useful to analyze technology licensing decisions, both from an academic and from a managerial perspective. We identify the main real options that are contained in out-licensing and in-licensing decisions. We discuss the characteristics of these options, the context in which they may arise - in terms of type of technology, firm size, timing, etc. - and the benefits of using a RO approach to frame strategic decisions regarding licensing. We find that there is no "universal use" of the RO approach in this area, as a variety of real options may arise from technology licensing decisions. RO theory may be useful for scholars to analyze issues such as the optimal governance mode to exploit an innovation; yet the main benefit of the RO approach probably rests in enabling managers to translate their intuitions into clear decisions rules, to determine whether the firm should license-in or license-out a technology, and under what conditions. Finally, we find that the real options contained in technology licensing decisions have "exotic" characteristics, which implies that we need to develop user-friendly and flexible models to estimate their value

    No full text
International audienceThe main aim of this article is to explain the differences of adaptation of the French and Italian e-waste management regimes to the European WEEE directive by examining modalities of waste governance at different levels. By carrying out a comparative case study analysis between Milan and Toulouse, it focuses on the local construction of a management chain in Italy and France that has been built to pursue the territorialisation objectives set by the European WEEE Directive. The empirical and theoretical framework driving the analysis is to evaluate the overall (dis)functioning of the "Clearing House" model through the relationships between involved actors: citizens-consumers, local authorities, distribution systems, hi-tech equipment producers (via eco-organisms), third sector actors (social economy) and treatment operators. In this approach, the concepts of socio-technical regime and transition management have been deemed useful tools since it is believed that the particular configuration of the supply chain is the result of the reciprocal interaction between the following factors: 1) A macro normative framework represented by the WEEE Directive and its implementation in France and Italy; 2) A meso dimension, which corresponds to the implementation on the urban scale of this regulatory framework; 3) A micro level, which is represented by technological niches where radical innovations occur.

    No full text
