Rebound effects and ICT : a review of the literature
International audienceThis paper presents a critical review of the literature on the rebound effects generated by information and communication technologies (ICT). Following a discussion of the types of general rebound, including direct, indirect, and economy-wide, the literature on ICT-related rebound effects is critically assessed. The chapter suggests ways of overcoming rebound and lays out promising avenues of research to better understand and tackle rebound effects in ICT
TIC & handicap
Quelles contributions les technologies de l'information et de la communication peuvent-elles apporter à une meilleure insertion des personnes en situation de handicap ? Les articles et témoignages de ce numéro apportent chacun une réponse à cette question
Meta-modeling : concepts, tools and applications
International audienceModels are essential artifacts in software engineering; they provide a compact, easy to understand, and mostly graphical description of a domain or system of interest. The construction of these models must adhere to a permitted structure that itself can be specified as a model - a meta-model. Nowadays, meta-modeling plays a growing role in Information Systems Engineering and is becoming a universal technique to define generic information structures, reference models, and modeling languages. However, for researchers and practitioners engaged in a meta-modeling activity, certain conceptual and operational issues remain vague and the full potential of meta-models not thoroughly understood. The goal of this tutorial is to give attendees a clear picture of the latest research in meta-modeling, to illustrate the variety of application domains and to demonstrate possibilities offered by available meta-CASE technologies along with their limits. Attendees will acquire the knowledge needed to properly envision the role of meta-models in information systems life-cycle and, accordingly, to select the adequate meta-modeling technical infrastructure
Extending organizational cognition: A conceptual exploration of mental extension in organizations
International audienceThe study of collective cognition has taken many forms in recent years, including collective managerial cognition, organizational learning, shared mental models, transactive memory and psychological climate. However, few studies have confronted the foundational ideas underlying group mentality directly, leaving the concept as largely metaphorical. The current work reviews foundational debates around the conceptual components of group minds to serve as a meta-theoretical heuristic to orient future research. To lay out this framework, conceptual distinctions are drawn between phenomenal, vehicle, content and context elements of cognition. Next, existing approaches are reframed as conjunctions of claims across the four levels, leading to a distinction between configurationalist, situated and extended views of collective cognition. Finally, future research is proposed regarding the interfaces between conceptual levels and the possibility of establishing bona fide group mental entities
Unraveling the link between managerial risk-taking and innovation: The mediating role of a risk-taking climate
International audienceScholars have proposed that taking risks in organizations is important for explaining innovation performance. Scholars traditionally have analyzed this link from two unconnected perspectives. From a managerial perspective, entrepreneurial orientation and leadership theories have been used to explain the positive relation between risk taking and innovation. From an employee perspective, creativity theory suggests that a risk-taking climate helps to explain innovative behaviors. However, there is little empirical research analyzing this link. This study examines the possibility of a connection between managers’ risk-taking propensities, employees’ risk-taking climate, and innovation performance. To do so, we test a quantitative model where the impact of the manager’ risk-taking propensity on innovation is mediated by its effect on employees’ risk-taking climate. Structural equation modeling is used to test the research hypotheses on a data set of 182 firms from the Spanish and Italian ceramic tile industry
The basic principles of competitive strategy: external and internal diagnosis
International audienceFirms operate in a more and more complex, dynamic, less predictable environment. This situation requires following different approaches of strategic positioning and strategic planning and developing new patterns of strategic thinking. There are several strategic models and tools. Most of them have advantages and disadvantages. In spite of these limitations, these models must be examined. The purpose of this chapter is to conduct a strategic analysis (external and internal diagnoses). It familiarizes the reader with the forces that shape competition in a company's external environment and then analyzes internal strategic capabilities for identifying strategic sustainable competitive advantage
Regulatory barriers to eco-innovation
This document presents the regulatory barriers to eco-innovation in the LED sector. These barriers have been collected through face-to-face interviews from the four cycLED partners in charge of developing a demonstrator (ONA, RIVA, BRAUN, ETAP), as well as through an online survey of European LED firms. This document also includes a study of patents as potential barriers to eco-innovation in the LED sector. It concludes by highlighting the benefits of its findings for actors involved in policy-making issues related to this sector
Revisiting Sun Tzu in the information overload age for applied intelligence education : stop answering, find good questions
International audienceSun Tzu's 'Art of War' is an illustration of the Chinese Strategic Mode of thinking. Today, faced with Information Overload it is unclear if the model of ''Foreknowledge'' is as relevant as it once was. The method we used in this paper is Action Research to compare an Occidental approach and an Asian approach. The results obtained are applied suggestions to Intelligence Education. The contribution is to show how to step away from the epistemic of the information-centric approach to shift to a more multi-centric approach. We identified anchors such as strategic and critical questioning, identifying source people we do not yet know, and uncertainty-acceptance and bounded rationality. The implications are numerous. We are not so much dependent on the information available as associated with Big Data and software. Our suggestions can be used in Small and Medium-Sized Organizations and do not necessitate resources associated with Large Organizations
Cambridge Handbook of Strategy as Practice
International audienceNow in its second edition, this extended and thoroughly updated handbook introduces researchers and students to the growing range of theoretical and methodological perspectives being developed in the vibrant field of strategy as practice. With new authors and additional chapters, it shows how the strategy as practice approach in strategic management moves away from disembodied and asocial studies of firm assets, technologies and practices to explore and explain the contribution that strategizing makes to people working at all levels of an organization. It breaks down many of the traditional paradigmatic barriers in strategy to investigate who the strategists are, what they do, how they do it, and what the consequences or outcomes of their actions are. This essential work summarizes recent developments in the field while presenting a clear agenda for future research.<br/
