A passage to France : skilled Indian SIEs in transition

No full text
International audiencePurpose This paper aims to explore the experience of self-initiated expatriates (SIEs) moving from the global South to the global North. It considers the relationship between country of origin and host country, the role of non-traditional destinations and the choices made by SIEs. Design/methodology/approach In-depth interviews were conducted with Indian SIEs and key experts to explore the motives, identities and life narratives of skilled expatriate Indians in France. Findings The results shed light on how individuals’ careers are fashioned through the intersection of identities; highlighting the interplay between country of origin and the host country as a catalyst in SIEs’ choice of destination. Furthermore, the authors demonstrate a strategic form of agency exercised through these SIEs’ choice of an unconventional destination. Research limitations/implications The intricate nature of SIE trajectories holds implications for migration theory, diaspora studies and career theory. SIEs from the Global South adopt varying strategies linked to specific host-country career offerings, often in sharp contrast with home-country opportunities. Practical implications The results inform managerial and policy-maker understandings of career motivations for mobile skilled workers moving for career and lifestyle. For countries seeking to attract talent, the findings demonstrate the roles of host-country immigration policy, country reputation and perceived career opportunities. Originality/value This study helps address research gaps in relation self-initiated expatriation from the Global South to the North. At the same time, it identifies the potential for transitional spaces and the relationship between countries, identity-formation factors and career agency. These findings on France as a transitional space – one of intermediacy and in-betweenness, where self-identity and future career projections can be re-imagined and reshaped – shed new light on how SIEs and their movements can be conceptualized.<br /

Social entrepreneurship, age and gender: toward a model of social involvement in entrepreneurship

No full text
International audienceHow and why does an entrepreneur decide to embark in social entrepreneurship and/or in a sustainable business? While the existing literature suggests that social entrepreneurs tend to be females and/or seniors, our findings indicate that these two groups have important differences; based on the analysis of the verbatim of entrepreneurs, our findings reveal that seniors claim to enter social enterprises with a conscious willingness to help society, while female entrepreneurs are less focused on social implication

From technical to non-technical skills among information systems suppliers

No full text
International audienceExisting research infers that in the information systems (IS) and information technology (IT) fields, a shift may occur between technical and non-technical skills. However, relatively little research has focused on going changes in terms of key skills in the IS suppliers sector. The purpose of this paper is to address this gap by investigating these skills evolution in the IS suppliers domain and discusses their impacts on IS and IT curricula. Design/methodology/approach This paper uses a qualitative method based on 15 semi-structured face-to-face interviews, with highly dedicated operational managers in senior positions in the field. Findings This study identifies, for the IS suppliers, the critical skills, which are basically non-technical, and peripheral skills, which are primarily technical. It then considers the consequences of this change and the necessary adaptations it requires for businesses and training for this field. Practical implications The findings suggest the need to redesign the educational curricula for future managers, and the adaptations required to the work organization, human resource management and business models of firms in the field. Originality/value The paper’s value is twofold. First, it focuses on IS service suppliers, an understudied area (most research examines IS outsourcing from the customer’s standpoint); second, it reveals the shift away from technical toward non-technical skills in a field that is intrinsically technical – a change that may occur more slowly than in other less technical sectors – and the consequences of this change for firms, education and society

Business model performance: five key drivers

No full text
International audiencePurpose The purpose of this paper is to help readers to better understand and manage the key drivers of business model performance. Design/methodology/approach This paper investigates research on business model performance to identify and illustrate five static and dynamic performance drivers. Findings While performance mechanisms linked to traditional business model components remain instrumental for business model success, the authors argue that managers need to adopt a more dynamic view, emphasizing how changing combinations of drivers matter over a firm’s life cycle. Originality/value The proposed approach combines insights from multiple theoretical perspective into an actionable framework for management practitioners

Où est le bon participant ?

No full text

The impact of contextual television ads on online conversions : An application in the insurance industry

No full text
International audienceThe use of contextual advertising, defined as the delivery of ads in related editorial contents, is expected to grow in the television industry due to the development of new technologies. However, the impact of this practice on behavioral consumer responses remains elusive. Using data from an online price comparison company, we study the short- and long-term effects of contextual television advertising on consumers' online conversions. We find that contextual ads have a higher immediate effect than non-contextual ads on consumers' responses for the product that is related to the context. However, both effects are similar in the long term. Additionally, our results suggest that the total impact of contextual advertising can be smaller than the net impact of neutral advertising due to a “spillover inhibition effect”: Compared with ads placed in neutral contexts, contextual ads generate fewer online conversions for products that are unrelated to the context. Our findings stress the importance of assessing the long-term impact of contextual advertising on the product portfolio, rather than just on the context-related product. Failing to do so could lead to advertising allocation decisions with lower returns on investment.<br /

Recreational Diving Practice for Stress Management: An Exploratory Trial

No full text
International audienceBackground: Within the components of Scuba diving there are similarities with meditation and mindfulness techniques by training divers to be in a state of open monitoring associated with slow and ample breathing. Perceived stress is known to be diminished during meditation practice. This study evaluates the benefits of scuba diving on perceived stress and mindful functioning. Method: A recreational diving group (RDG; n = 37) was compared with a multisport control group (MCG; n = 30) on perceived stress, mood, well-being and mindfulness by answering auto-questionnaires before and after a 1-week long UCPA course. For the diving group, stability of the effects was evaluated 1 month later using similar auto-questionnaires. Results: Perceived stress did not decrease after the course for the MCG [ The divers showed a significant reduction on the perceived stress score (p < 0.05) with a sustainable effect (p = 0.01)]. An improvement in mood scale was observed in both groups. This was associated to an increase in mindfulness abilities. Conclusions: The practice of a recreational sport improves the mood of subjects reporting the thymic benefits of a physical activity performed during a vacation period. The health benefits of recreational diving appear to be greater than the practice of other sports in reducing stress and improving well-being
