The Reclamation Project: Exploring One HBCU's Pursuit of Institutional Accreditation Through Executive and Senior Leadership Actions

    No full text
Several Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have experienced warnings, probations, and ultimately loss of accreditation under the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges (SACS). Eighty percent of HBCUs fall under SACS and have been cited disproportionately compared to predominately White institutions (PWIs) that fall under the same accreditor. Recently the U. S. Department of Education eliminated the geographical boundaries for regional accreditors. As a result, HBCUs can seek viable options from U. S. Department of Education-approved accreditors with rigorous standards and support toward gaining accreditation. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine executive and senior leadership actions and practices that led to the successful reclamation of accreditation through the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools (TRACS) when the regional accreditor lost accreditation. Future research should include a study across the seven other HBCUs that have lost accreditation. The findings of this study generated recommendations for procedural leadership execution of processes for maintaining institutional effectiveness, for achieving institutional accreditation after a loss of regional accreditation, and how the Board of Trustees' selection, evaluation, compensation, and termination of a president influence accreditation. This study encourages executive and senior leadership to seek viable options for accreditation when efforts to regional accreditation have failed

Black Stem Mentors Matter: A Descriptive Case Study Examining the Contextual Factors of Mentoring Relationships in Stem at One Private Hbcu That Contribute to African American Student Persistence Within Stem Majors

    No full text
This case study aimed to examine the contextual factors that make up mentoring relationships in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) at a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) that contribute to African American student persistence in STEM. An exploratory mixed methods approach was utilized to focus on STEM students at a private HBCU in the Southern region of the United States. Critical race theory and the phenomenological variant ecological systems theory were used to undergird the findings that were revealed about mentoring relationships in STEM at HBUCs. The results of this study indicated that there is a strong, positive significant relationship between quality of mentoring and students' motivation (r = .85, p < .001) suggesting that when students receive quality mentoring their motivation increases which may contribute to their persistence within their STEM major. The qualitative data revealed common themes amongst students as it pertains to the contextual factors that make up the mentoring relationship. The findings have implications for STEM mentors and STEM programs at institutions where African Americans tend to struggle with persisting in STEM

An Examination of Motivational Factors Associated with High School Students' Intent to Pursue Postsecondary Pathways

    No full text
Since the early 1980s, college access and student achievement have been defining components of America's growing economic disparity. While declining college enrollment rates have been further impacted by the onset of the Coronavirus, this study evaluated the subjective perceptions of 96 students attending an urban high school located in a Southeastern region of Georgia. A quantitative research design was applied to develop a modified 4-point Likert fashion survey instrument used to measure the extent in which perceived motivational influences were associated with participants' intentions to transition to college after graduation. A correlation analysis revealed that students' perceptions of usefulness in high school subject areas, interest in high school subject areas, parental encouragement, school encouragement, peer encouragement, peer interest, and financial costs associated with college were all significantly related to students' intent to pursue college as a postsecondary pathway. To address the persistent decline in immediate college enrollment rates, the findings from this study suggested a need for new developments in education policy, practice, and future research. In addition, recommendations were made for secondary schools, higher education entities, policymakers, and practitioners
