Weise Praise-Singing, Part 2
On September 3, 2013, three days after the inaugural Kuria Cultural Festival, we visited the best female poet (Waisa) in a small village in Southwestern Kenya, just metres from the Tanzania border. Michael Derek Gideon studied the poetry and music of Kuria for nine months in 2013, with the guidance and expertise of teacher and scholar, Peter Muniko. Second group performance at the 2013 Kuria Poetry and Music Festival 2013. The group is led by Gichama (Thomas Mwita) and they are from the Bugumbe clan. The instruments are: Ibitiambui (woodblock shoes with or without bells that only men wear) and Ekerongwe (flute).
