The effects of the principal's leadership behavior upon teacher application to work, teacher morale, and student, 1991
The purpose of this study was to determine whether principals planning techniques, interpersonal style, and teacher involvement in decision-making, Influenced teacher morale, teachers' application to work, and student achievement in low- and high-achieving elementary schools. A descriptive research design was used. One hundred forty-six C146) teacher responses were paired for data analysis. Seven (29%) of the null hypotheses were accepted and seventeen (71%) of the null hypotheses were rejected. The results of the study indicated that the principal's leadership behavior is related to school climate and school achievement under specific circumstances. Several alternative strategies are recommended for administrators and teachers to use in order to Improve the unsatisfactory conditions in low- and high-achieving elementary schools
Job related and non-job related predictors of stress among Georgia special education directors, 1991
Factors which predict general and job-related stress levels of Georgia Special Education Directors were identified and analyzed. The research was based on responses to a seventy-nine item survey which was mailed to the entire population of Special Education Directors in Georgia. Eighty-one percent of the surveys were returned. The study allowed participants to identify personal and professional stressors in their lives. These were related to the characteristics of represented school systems and the characteristics of each Special Education Director. Data were analyzed using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient at a pre-established significance level of .05 or a confidence level of 95%. A statistically significant relationship was found to exist between general stress and (a) job stress, (b) job satisfaction, and (c) overall health. Further, a statistically significant relationship was found to exist between perceived souces of job stress and (a) overallr health and (b) job satisfaction. No relationship was found to exist between the personal and professional characteristics of the Special Education Directors and general stress or job stress. Further, no relationship was found between general or job related stress of Special Education Directors and the characteristics of their respective school districts. Because the research was based on responses of 146 of the entire population of 180 Directors, recommendations are made which should benefit Georgia Special Education Directors and, ultimately, the students whom they serve
Patterns of black homicide in Atlanta: 1979-1989, 1995
Atlanta, Georgia ranks first among cities in the United States in violent crime rates and third in homicide rates. This research proposes an analysis of homicide patterns in Atlanta from 1979 through 1989, in terms of homicide rates by victim-offender relationship, race and gender of both perpetrators and victims, perpetrators' motives, weapons utilized and seasonal variation (month, day and time of homicide). Motives are classified as follows: verbal argument, emotional argument, sex related, lovers tiff, alcohol and drug, theft, and other. Homicide patterns will be analyzed by both statistical and graphic methods. Annual percent change in homicides by all afore-mentioned variables will be compared and tested for statistical significance utilizing t-test procedures. Auto-regressive (ARIMA) are employed to predict the homicide trends i.e., over the next ten year period
Probation in the state of Georgia, 1992
Many people believe that criminals whose sentences are reduced to probation are given a slap on the wrist and call for wide use of incarceration. Supporters of incarceration note the high recidivism rate among probationers as enough reason for the increased use of imprisonment. Non-supporters of incarceration theory contend that the conditions laid down by the courts for individuals placed on probation comprise inadequate punishment in most cases. First, this thesis describes the various components of the criminal justice system in Georgia. Secondly, it deals with adult and juvenile probation in Georgia. Thirdly, it analyzes probation in Georgia by race, gender, education and types of crimes from 1981 through 1990. Sources of data include Georgia Probation Manual, interviews with officials of the Georgia Department of Corrections, officials of the Georgia Corrections Academy, scholarly articles, and books dealing with probation. The major findings disclose: (1) the use of probation by judges in Georgia has increased appreciably and annually since 1981; (2) the number of blacks on probation in discussed years has increased steadily since 1981; (3) Georgia probationers are getting older; (4) probationers are more likely to commit misdemeanors than felonies; (5) the number of females on probation has increased annually; and (6) the number of probationers on drug-related charges has increased

A comparative study of the performances of sixth grade students in elementary and middle schools, 1989
Purpose The purpose of this study was to determine if differences exist in sixth grade elementary students' and sixth grade middle school students' achievement level, attendance rate, retention rate, and perception of the educational environment in a metropolitan school system. Methods and Procedures Five hundred eighty-two sixth grade students from six elementary and six middle schools comprised the study sample. Schools and homeroom classes were randomly selected for participation. Attendance and retention data were accessed from school system reports published annually. Student achievement data were obtained from results of the spring 1988 and 1989 administrations of the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills. Students' perceptions of the educational environment were assessed by the Elementary School Environment Survey (ESES). The research was descriptive in nature. All data were analyzed with the use of version ten of the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS-X). The statistical tools used were the T-test, Crosstabs and Breakdown. The level of significance was set at .05. Findings No significant difference was found in the achievement level of sixth grade elementary and sixth grade middle school students. No significant difference was found in the attendance rate of sixth grade elementary and sixth grade middle school students. A significant difference was found in the retention rate of sixth grade elementary and sixth grade middle school students. The retention rate of sixth graders in the middle school is significantly higher than the retention rate of sixth graders in the elementary school. A significant difference was found in the perception of the educational environment of sixth grade elementary and sixth grade middle school students on the Humanism dimensions of the ESES. Some significant differences were also found between the Alienation, Autonomy, Morale and Resources dimensions of the educational environment and other variables of the studv. Conclusions The results of this study indicate that there are differences in the rate of retention for sixth grade elementary school students and sixth grade middle school students in one metropolitan school system. For some dimensions of the educational environment, relationships exist between sixth grade elementary and middle school students' perceptions and their achievement and attendance rates
Personal orientations of selected black executives in fortune 500 companies, 1990
The personal orientations of 31 Black executives employed in various Fortune 500 companies were examined. The purpose was to determine whether significant differences in personal orientation existed between Black middle managers and Black senior executives. Gender differences in personal orientation were also assessed. Twenty-two middle managers and nine senior executives participated. Twenty-five of the participants were male and six were female. Each participant completed the Personal Orientation Inventory (POI). T-test results indicated significant differences between the middle managers and the senior executives on six of the 14 POI scales. No significant gender differences were found
An africentric rite of passage program and its impact on adolescent African American male attendance, discipline, and achievement, 2006
The use of qualitative and quantitative methodology for this research was deemed essential. All mixed method designs use triangulation techniques. Surveys, observations, quasi- experimental techniques and hard data collection gave a clear view of the results. Demographic data attained from the surveys gave insights into the lives of the participants and teachers surveyed. The quasi-experimental technique also adds some validity to the research. Overall, a higher percentage of students in the experimental group rated themselves as not having discipline problems and improving in attendance as compared to the control group. In other respects the control group reported higher percentages as compared to the experimental in terms of class grades, completing assignments on time, team members working equally hard for success Results on Correlation Analysis The analysis of the percentages of teachers responses to the Mighty Men of Valor program indicated that a majority of the teachers did not perceive the program as achieving the objectives
Principals' perceptions of the effectiveness and performance of traditionally trained teachers and nontraditionally trained teachers in the DeKalb County school system, 1999
This quantitative study examined the principals' perceptions of the effectiveness and performance of traditionally trained teachers and nontraditionally trained teachers. The study was longitudinal in nature and involved a population of 284 teachers who were employed in a large metropolitan school system in Georgia. The sample of the population was analyzed during a three-year period that extended from the 1994-95 academic year through the 1996-97 academic year. There were ten dependent variables, two independent variables, and three moderating variables in the study. The statistical procedures involved . tests for equality of means, analysis of variance, and Scheffe tests. The findings of the study were as follows. The principals' perceptions of the traditionally trained teachers were significantly different from those of the nontraditionally trained teachers. The mean rating scores for eight of the ten variables were significantly higher for the traditionally trained teachers. Principals' perceptions indicated that teachers who were less than 30 years of age and had three years of teaching experience or less were found to be more effective as measured by 33 effective teaching practices on the Teacher Performance Observation Record criteria
