A descriptive study of multicultural factors and client attitudes toward misdiagnosis and social work treatment, 1999

    Get PDF
This study examined the problems and ethical standards in Multicultural counseling which impacted the misdiagnosis and pre-termination of clients in the mental health setting. The study was based on the premise that cultural awareness and sensitivity are linked to consumers completing the contract for treatment and being diagnosed correctly. Six independent variables were considered, and six dependent variables were identified. Data were gathered from thirty consumers enrolled in a mental health center, which is part of the DeKalb Community Service Board. A questionnaire and an analysis grid were developed. The researcher found that counselors at the Mental Health Center are not culturally aware, and did not spend enough time getting to know their clients and their behavior patterns. The conclusions drawn from the findings suggest that counselors should be trained on issues of ethics and cultural awareness. The results of this study clearly identified cultural factors that related to premature termination and misdiagnosis

A descriptive study of the distribution of calcium and iron ions in tail tissues of rana pipiens larvae (stages I-XVIII), 1968

Sections of the tail region of Rana pipiens larvae were studied in an attempt to determine the localization and relative concentrations of calcium and iron in the different tissues during stage differentiation. Tails were excised from animals in embryonic stage 25 and from larval stages I-XVIII, and fixed in Bouin1 s fluid. Alizarin red-S was used in determining the localization and relative concentrations of calcium and iron ions. Calcium was not detected in the tissues of the one embryonic stage (25) studied. However, iron was localized in the epidermis, basement lamella, and the inner fibrous lamella of the notochord sheath in the same stage. The larval stages were inconsistent in their distribution and relative concentrations of the ions according to stage differentiation. Calcium appeared in fewer tissues than did iron, but in greater concentration. The largest concentration of calcium was found in the musculature, whereas iron was distributed most abundantly in the epidermis and the basement lamella. The cells of the notochord demonstrated the presence of very little calcium and iron. This investigation indicated that the greater percentage of the calcium localized in the tissues was exchangeable calcium rather than nonexchangeable calcium

The purpose of this research was to demonstrate to social work professionals such as educators that some living arrangements of elderly African Americans can affect their emotional well-being. This study evaluates the elderly African American's mental health and their living arrangements. The population for this study was forty-one elderly African Americans that reside in the Techwood community low-rise houses and the Palmer's high-rise apartments of Atlanta, Georgia. The theoretical orientation used in this research was based on the Ecological Perspective. The findings of this study significantly demonstrated that the environment of the elderly African American does in fact affect their mental health. Statistically significant differences were not revealed in terms of how one environment affects the elderly African Americans mental health more than another environment
