The glyoxylate cycle in astasia longa, 1971

    No full text
Previous work demonstrated the presence of an operative TCA cycle in Astasia longa. The experimental results also suggested the presence of glyoxylate shunting mechanisms since the cells grew with acetate as the sole carbon source. In the present investigation aconitase, fumarase, isocitrate lyase, and malate synthetase have been demonstrated spectrophotomet- rically. The effects of substrate concentration, pH, enzyme concentration, storage at - 5 C, and cofactor concentration on the activity of these enzymes have been determined. The data obtained in this investigation demonstrate the presence of isocitrate lyase and malate synthetase, 'the key glyoxylate enzymes,' in cell-free extracts of Astasia longa. Based on this and previously reported data it is concluded that in Astasia longa the dual operation of both the TCA and glyoxylate cycles occur

Reflections of melancholy in the plays of John Millington synge, 1983

This thesis is an analytical study of the reflections of melancholy in the plays of the Irish dramatist John Millington Synge. These reflec-tions take the form of two principal themes: loneliness, which dominates the general atmosphere of his drama, and the death of the young and the decay of beauty. Such thematic concerns do not occur casually but are, in fact, a reflection of Synge's own private melancholy. Chapter I discusses the Irish dramatic movement, the establishing of the Abbey Theater, and Synge's contribution to the Irish theater. Chapter II presents an essential biographical background, focusing mainly on Synge's religious and emotional experiences. These experiences to a large extent colored his life with a sense of depression and loneliness. His rejection of Christianity, for example, created a barrier between him and his community, while his failure to establish a lasting relationship that could end in marriage deepened his sense of isolation. Chapter III discusses chiefly the problem of loneliness as represented in the following plays: In the Shadow of the Glen. The Well of the Saints. and The Playboy of the Western World. The mood of loneliness is so strong in these plays that it seems as if it is Synge's message to the world. Chapter IV discusses the theme of the destruction of youth and beauty as shown in The Tinker's Wedding. Riders to the Sea, and Deirdre of the Sorrows, a theme linked causally to Synge's failing health and his increasing sense of his own mortality. Chapter V is a conclusion summarizing the principal ideas of the thesis, together with a brief evaluation of Synge's dramatic universe and its association with modern drama

The regulation of carbohydrates in cockroaches, 1976

The purpose of this investigation was to obtain quantitative measurements of glucose, trehalose, and glycogen found in the hemolymph of adult cockroaches Blaberus craniifer (Burmeister) and to determine the glycogen content in muscle tissue extracts. Furthermore, the dynamic relationship of these components was measured under various levels of carbohydrate diets in order to observe any changes which might be directly attributed to the diets of these insects. All experiments were performed on adult cockroaches of B>. craniifer maintained at room temperature and fed the following diets: (a) Gerber's mixed baby cereal, (b) Gerber's mixed baby cereal plus 10% starch, (c) Gerber's high protein cereal plus 10% gelatin, and (d) starved diet. Glucose in the heinolymph was determined by the glucose oxidase method and the anthrone method was used to measure trehalose and glycogen in the hemolymph and muscle tissue. The mean values of all three components of the hemolymph (trehalose, glucose, and glycogen) were essentially the same for the fed controls and experimental. However, significant differences were noted for the decreased carbohydrate and the starved diets. The muscle glycogen mean concentrations were essentially the same. However, significant differences were noted for the starved cockroaches

The impact of the structural adjustment program on Edo women farmers in Edo state, Nigeria, 1980-1994, 1995

This study examined the impact of Structural Adjustment Program on Edo women farmers in Edo State using Edo Agricultural Development Program (ADP) as a case study. The study incorporated elements of historical and descriptive research design which included both primary and secondary data. The primary data gathered in the study were analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient, descriptive statistics, T-test, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Turkey-HSD test. The findings established that: 1. Edo women farmers' access to productive resources has not improved since SAP, 2. SAP expenditure cuts on social services/subsidies decreases the women farmers' income generating activities and intensify their workload, both paid and unpaid, 3. Food and other consumer prices have skyrocketed since SAP, 4. SAP has reduced Edo women farmers' food and agricultural production through cuts in social services/ subsidies and emphasis on cash crops production for export, with focus on large scale successful farmers at the expense of peasant farmers. Therefore, the researcher recommends that the state and the market be restructured to integrate women into the development process in response to their needs and contributions as both producers and reproducers. SAP should focus on plans to eliminate poverty and meet the basic needs of the poor and vulnerable during the transitional phase

A survey of the counseling services provided to a select group of clients by the crisis center of Grady Memorial Hospital from January 1, 1992 to January 1, 1993, 1993

    Get PDF
This study involved determining who exactly was being seen at the Grady Memorial Hospital Rape Crisis Center. This study included using the files of rape patients seen in this Center from January 1992 - January 1993. There is a great deal of patients that come in for the initial medical exam and discontinue contact with the center. There is another number of patients who return for follow up counseling sessions. The files that are kept on the patient include the case history, which is filled out by the counselor at the time of the medical examination, and there is also a copy of the patients follow up information. The majority of patients are lost and lack support. This study will attempt to uncover what is being done in the Grady Memorial Hospital Rape Crisis Center and what improvements can be made

A comparative analysis of the bulimics' and non-bulimics' perception of their family environment, 1990

The purpose of this study was to compare the bulimics' and non-bulimics' perception of their family environment in terms of cohesion and adaptability. A quasi-experimental design, using bulimics in an eating disorder clinic at Decatur Hospital and non-bulimics attending Clark Atlanta University School of Social Work. The data were collected by completion of a self-report scale design to measure the individual's perception of their family environment. The instrument utilized was the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale (Faces III), which was designed by Dr. David Olson in 1979. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and are reported in terms of frequency distribution and percentages. The t-test was employed to compare the means of the two groups being bulimic and non-bulimic. The hypotheses proposed that there was no significant difference between the bulimics' and non-bulimics' adaptability and cohesion scores. The t-test analysis for testing the differences between the bulimics and non-bulimics showed for cohesion, mean = 38.3 (non-bul1imic), 24.3 (bulimic), t-value = 5.53, df = 28, p = 0.000, for adaptability, mean = 24.3 (non-bulimic), 21.86 (bulimic), t-value = 1.24, df = 28, p. = 0.226. The level of significance was set at 0.01
