Extracurricular activities and student achievement: examination of casual relationship, 1996

    Get PDF
This study examines the causal relationship between extracurricular activities and student academic achievement at one high school for the academic year ranging from August 1994 through June 1995. This process investigates whether grades were impacted based on the activity and the time spent involved in the activity. Grades were compared and viewed in accordance with the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills. Surveys given to teachers and students to gather information regarding their perceptions examined behavior, concentration level, and homework habits for activity participants during and after the season of their activity. Statistics to find any significant differences were applied to the survey items. The findings indicate that there is no significant difference in students' grades during the period of activity versus non-activity. The only indicators causing a difference in grades is related to the amount of time the student spends engaging in the activity and the level of commitment the student exhibits for the activity. The conclusion is that a student's being involved in extracurricular activities does not affect grades; however, the degree of involvement can

Hybrid neural network image processing testbed, 1996

The focus of this research was to establish a testbed for pattern recognition In this testbed, the wavelet transform is used as a preprocessor for various neural networks. The wavelet transform is used to perform image compression, and several wavelet filters and compression techniques are implemented The compressed data is later formatted and used as input to a neural network where pattern recognition is performed. The wavelet filters used in the wavelet transformation were the Daubechies 4 (DAUD4) and the Haar wavelet filters. After compression was performed, the root mean square error (RMS) was computed and compared with a 'common' compression technique called JPEG compression. After testing each compression technique, zone compression using the wavelet transform yielded the best results. At this point, the compressed data was used by various neural networks for pattern recognition. There were three neural nets in the testbed They were the neocognitron, a genetic algorithm driven neural network, and the Hopfield neural net. Each neural net was used to perform pattern recognition using the compressed data The results from each neural net were good, but the neocognitron gave the best results

An analysis of various activities performed by a high school principal, 1981

Statement of the Problem How much time does a high school principal spend on various activities he performs and how do these activities relate to his in-terpersonal role, informational role and decisional role? Purpose of the Project The researcher's purpose for making this study was to analyze the time used in performing various activities. Utilizing Henry Mintzberg's paradigm 'The Manager's Job: Folklore and Fact,' the researcher set up a checklist to see how often he performed activities that could be identified with Mintzberg's Interpersonal, Informational and Decisional roles, along with his designated subroles: figurehead, leader, liaison, disseminator, spokesman, monitor, disturbance handler, resource allocator and negotiator. Findings The following data provide information into the use of this princi-pal's time from February to May: 1. The Informational role required 57 percent of the researcher's time; the Interpersonal role required J>2 percent of the researcher's time; and the Decisional role required 11 percent of his time. 2. Subroles of disseminator, figurehead and monitoring were most time-c onsuming. 3. Subroles of resource allocator, liaison and negotiator were least time-consuming. Conclusions 1. Approximately three-fourth of the principal's time was spent on activities that involved verbal communication. He had to make much use of the telephone, as well as take part in numerous conferences with staff, students, parents, area and central office personnel. 2. Because of the amount of information that had to be shared with staff, students, parents, area office and central office, the subrole of disseminator was essential in implementing the school program effec-tively. 3. Less time was devoted to monitoring activities, i.e. those directly related to supervising the instructional phase of the program, than to figurehead activities. Implications 1. The issue in time management is how to get more time free to act rather than react. 2. How to spend more time on policy development and other leader-ship activities and less time focusing on other people's crises or engaging in pointless activity. Recommendations 1. Continual administrative orientation should be afforded princi-pals in the area of 'time management.' This could be implemented by the board of education as part of its staff development program. 2. The writer must continue in his thrust to delegate more respon-sibilities, and use the assistance of others in disseminating materials, in order to minimize time devoted to these activities. 3. This research should be reviewed by other high school principals with expectations for future studeis to be made by others, to make them cognizant of how their time is utilized

Nigeria's African relations: a case study of the foreign policy of Nigeria towards Southern Africa, 1960-1979, 1981

This dissertation seeks to describe and explain the changing nature of Nigeria's Southern African policy from i960 to 1979 Utilizing a case study of its Southern African relations during that period, the author argues that certain 'power factors' or 'capabilities' conditioned Nigeria's foreign policy. These capabilities include its population and size, military preparedness, political processes and leadership, and economic capacity. While the Southern African policy of the pre-civil war regime is seen as inconsistent and passive, the author maintains that there were significant and positive changes in that policy during the post Nigerian civil war era and that the changes were reflexive of corresponding changes in the above-mentioned capabilities as well as the external environ-ment.Looking at the history of the pre and post-civil war regimes, it is concluded that Nigeria during its early years did not project a Southern African policy stance commensurate with its capabilities. In other words, the pre-civil war regime was unable to utilize Nigeria's capabilities to influence the racist regimes of Southern Africa nor their Western allies. However as the objective basis of its capabilities changed positively, the post civil war regimes became more aggressive in influencing the events in that region

Isolation of the elderly and its impact on their health and welfare, 1986

The purpose of this study was to find out the impact of isolation on the elderly Americans heal the and welfare. It was estimated by the 1980 census that there were nearly 100,000 elderly persons of 60 years or older who are living in Fulton County. Out of these number, 44,922 (44-.9%) are living alone. Most of these live-alones are neither contacted by someone nor reached by services. Also, there are many elderly persons living in Fulton County than any of the other counties in Atlanta Region. Some of the reasons for their isolation were found to be frailty, illiteracy, lack of knowledge of existing services, absence of telephone reassurance and the like. This paper, therefore (a) investigates the possible problems and obstacles that stand in the way of the elderly in obtaining the much needed services for food, shelter, clothing and caring; and (b) how lack of resources coupled with poor general public attitude and perception of the elderly have compounded their problem. The setting chosen for this research was Fulton County specifically the Senior Citizen Services of Metropolitan Atlanta-an administrative agency which oversees as well as dispenses programs and services to the elderly in the comity. Also, included were the Multi-Purpose Senior Center, the researcher's own clients and other respondents to the questionnaires the researcher administered in Fulton County. The sample for the study consisted of eighty (80) elderly persons of 60 years of age or older of "both "black and whites. The data collected on each respondent included a senior citizen needs assessment survey questionnaire and elderly isolation questionnaire. Percentages and descriptive statistics were utilized to analyze the data. The results of the study support the hypothesis that: (a) The proper physical, social, and psychological functioning of an elderly individual is definitely influenced "by the kind of environment in which he/she lives, (b) There is a definite relationship of isolation on health. The conclusion of this was that problems does exist in the delivery of services to the elderly in the county. There is need for outreach services in order to locate and identify the isolated and hard to reach elderly. Older persons require special counseling, reassurance and assistance in obtaining the needed services. Furthermore, there is need for increased public awareness programs to- foster sensitivity to the needs of the isolated elderly person, and to increase general awareness of services available to the elderly
