    Get PDF
The article analyzes the phenomenon of double trauma in Phan Thuy Ha\u27s I Am My Father\u27s Daughter, focusing on the role of the second generation in receiving and re-narrating the trauma memories of the previous generation within post-war Vietnam. The study uses postmemory and intergenerational trauma theory, employing a qualitative research methodology combined with an interdisciplinary approach that bridges literature and psychoanalysis, along with narrative analysis. It argues that the nonfiction text operates as a layered memory structure and proposes the application of the concept of “dual trauma” for the second generation as a new approach to better understand the depth of post-war narratives. The findings indicate that the narrator not only inherits wartime memory but also undergoes secondary trauma in the process of probing unresolved memories. The paper affirms that the act of narration the testimony of the following generation becomes an expression of the responsibility to remember and opens the possibility for healing

This paper analyzes the role of the community in preserving the Kamakura-bori, a traditional lacquered wood carving craft with a history of over 700 years in Kamakura City, Kanagawa Prefecture. Employing qualitative research methods, including interviews with artisans, on-site observations at production facilities, and analysis of historical documents and policy materials, the paper demonstrates that the Kamakura-bori community not only maintains traditional techniques and cultural values but also actively engages in education, skill transmission, market development, and product innovation. From community classes to cultural experience workshops and tourism-craft fusion models, the community has created a flexible cultural and social ecosystem that enables the Kamakura-bori craft to adapt to modern society

Spatial studies in literary research consider geographical space not as a static element but as a dynamic and changing factor that affects the formation of the artistic thinking of poets and writers. Combining Yi-Fu Tuan\u27s phenomenological perspective on place with Robert Tally Jr.\u27s geoliterary criticism, the article analyzes how space and place are constructed in Dong Duc Bon\u27s poetry. The results show that Dong Duc Bon\u27s poetry has evolved in its approach to reconstructing landscapes, shifting from romantic poetics to existential poetics, to reflect the sense of exile and contemporary cultural and social conflicts

This research explores perceptual differences among tourist clusters to examine regional tourism linkage in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. Building on prior perception-based segmentation, we re-estimate clusters with higher granularity (k = 3) and statistically validate differences across 25 variables using one-way ANOVA. A pruned decision tree clarifies the minimal set of cues that separates segments, while a correlation-network analysis visualizes how governance, cultural experience, and environmental attributes co-organize in tourists’ mental models. The results indicate 23 variables with significant mean differences (p < 0.001), with governance signals (policy coherence, partnership mechanisms) and cultural events emerging as dominant discriminators. This paper contributes by connecting perception-based segmentation with statistical verification, providing evidence-based outcomes for specific regional tourism strategies. The findings emphasize the significance of symbolic and structural characteristics in influencing tourist perceptions of interprovincial cooperation. This research explores perceptual differences among tourist clusters to examine regional tourism linkage in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. THE FAILURE OF THE WEST TO FILL THE POWER VACUUM IN EAST ASIA: ANGLO–FRENCH RIVALRY ON THE KOREAN PENINSULA, 1866–1887

    Get PDF
In the late nineteenth century, the race for colonial expansion unfolded across many regions of the world, most notably in Asia and Africa. Although this imperial contest drew in the principal European and American colonial powers, certain areas remained “power vacuums” owing to rival cooperation or the absence of explicit agreements among Western states. The Korean Peninsula during the final decades of the nineteenth century epitomises such a case. Despite their military and diplomatic interventions, both Britain and France failed to construct a sustainable “Western order” on the peninsula, thereby leaving an unfilled “power vacuum” within East Asia. This vacuum was gradually occupied by Japan from the late nineteenth century onwards, especially following the first Sino–Japanese War and, ultimately, through formal annexation in 1910, while the Qing dynasty still retained residual influence and Korea pursued a strategy of “pragmatic balancing.” This paper seeks to analyse the failure of Britain and France in their endeavours to conquer and partition East Asian territories through a case study of Korea between the 1860s and 1880s, and to elucidate the structural and contingent reasons behind this failure, thereby contributing to interpretations of how East Asia’s power structure was transformed amid the colonial expansion of the Western imperial powers and the rise of Japan, which came to replace the West’s regional role during this period. In the late nineteenth century, the race for colonial expansion unfolded across many regions of the world, most notably in Asia and Africa. This qualitative study explores how competency-based education (CBE) is used in English writing classes for non-English majors at Vietnamese universities, focusing on digital tools and writing skills for employment. Based on theories of competency-based education and socio-constructivist learning, the study uses semi-structured interviews with 10 lecturers. This data, supported by classroom observations and document analysis, provides a detailed account of teaching practices, their benefits, and the challenges of putting them into practice. The lecturers reported that digital tools helped students produce realistic texts and receive ongoing feedback. However, they also identified problems with assessment practices, heavy workloads, and limited support from their universities. The findings indicate a need for clearer curriculum guidance and specific professional development to align teaching and assessment with the goals of CBE. By concentrating on the lecturers\u27 views, the paper offers practical advice for curriculum designers and teacher educators and suggests future research should include student perspectives and policy analysis. This qualitative study explores how competency-based education (CBE) is used in English writing classes for non-English majors at Vietnamese universities, focusing on digital tools and writing skills for employment.
