Aus den Untersuchungen zum Wiener Palimpsest des Grammatikers Herodian II: Hdn. Vind. fr. Ia (fol. 6r), Zeilen 1–13, De prosodia catholica, Buch 5, Nomina auf -ιος*

For several years an international team of five classical scholars have been working on the decipherment of the Vienna Herodian palimpsest, i.e. fragments of the important but lost work De prosodia catholica of the grammarian Aelius Herodianus (2nd cent. AD) that Herbert Hunger discovered sixty years ago in a palimpsest of the Austrian National Library in Vienna (see GLO 41–42, 2023, 233–287). The classicists are preparing a critical edition of these fragments, the so-called Herodianus Vindobonensis, with a comprehensive commentary. In cooperation with leading specialists in the field of the digital recovery of palimpsests various state-of-the-art methods of imaging and image processing have been applied to render the erased early-tenth-century Greek script visible. While the digital recovery and the decipherment of the text are still ongoing, some parts of the palimpsest, where the undeciphered gaps have been reduced very substantially, are being published in a preliminary version (text, translation, commentary). The current article presents the beginning of fr. Ia of the Hdn. Vind. The rule in question belongs to Book 5 of the De prosodia catholica and concerns the accentuation of the nominative singular of nominal forms ending in -ιος. The preliminary edition of the new text – presented here for the first time – is accompanied by a German translation and a detailed commentary. An English translation is included in an appendix

The Archimedes Palimpsest: Experiences of a Palaeographer

    Get PDF
The famous palimpsest containing important works by Archimedes was discovered by a Danish scholar early in the 20th century. But owing to its poor state of preservation many passages were difficult to read or completely illegible. This paper describes the stages by which, thanks to the application of modern technology, it has been possible to resolve most of the difficulties

Volumes et viscères. Sens et emplois de ὄγκος dans les textes médicaux et philosophiques grecs, son rapport à ἔγκατα (Homère) et la question de la Loi Eichner

The present work is devoted to the Ancient Greek lexeme ὄγκος, which denotes a swelling, a distension, a tumor (cf. oncology), a round mass, especially in the vocabulary of anatomy and physiology. More generally, ὄγκος means ‘bulk, size, mass of a body’. Textual evidence confirms that ὄγκος originally refers to volume, not to weight. These observations pave the way for a diachronic analysis of the word. [abstract exceeds 1.5 p.

Aus den Untersuchungen zum Wiener Palimpsest des Grammatikers Herodian I: Prolegomena

Herbert Hunger’s discovery of fragments of the De prosodia catholica of the grammarian Aelius Herodianus (2nd c. AD) in a palimpsest of the Austrian National Library in Vienna sixty years ago opened up new possibilities for recovering this important but lost ancient work on the accentuation of the Greek language. It has been hitherto known only through epitomes and quotations by later authors. The fragments survived in ten folios of an early-tenth-century manuscript, but have for centuries been hidden underneath a later script. About 1200, the text of Herodian was removed by scraping and washing off the original script and the parchment was re-used for a new copy of the Life of St. John Chrysostom (ÖNB Codex hist. gr. 10). In 1967 Hunger published an edition of passages that he managed to decipher using ultraviolet light. Still, a larger part of the palimpsest remained illegible. In the last 25 years new efforts have been made to decipher the Vienna Herodian fragments, the so-called Herodianus Vindobonensis. An international team of five classical scholars has been charged with the task of continuing the research started by Hunger. In cooperation with leading specialists in the field of the digital recovery of palimpsests various state-of-the-art methods of imaging and image processing have been applied to render the erased Greek script visible. Over the past several years the classicists have made considerable progress in deciphering and examining the fragments. They are preparing a full critical edition with translation and an extensive commentary. Since the text is still illegible in many places, new digital, technical and physical approaches are going to be applied. While the recovery and the decipherment of the text are ongoing, some parts of the palimpsest, where the undeciphered gaps have been reduced very substantially, are going to be published in a preliminary version (text, translation, commentary). The present article contains the prolegomena to these preliminary publications

Die Skythika Dexipps von Athen : Gedanken zur Abfassung

    Get PDF
The historian Dexippus of Athens covered the events of his time in two separate works: a chronicle from mythical times to A.D. 269 and the so-called Scythica, which focused on the invasions in the Black Sea region by East Germanic tribes in the third century A.D. down to about 271. This paper discusses the relationship between the two works, both preserved only in fragments. New text from the Scythica, the socalled Scythica Vindobonensia, makes it likely that Dexippus repeated sections from the chronicle practically verbatim. This discovery sheds light on the nature of the Scythica, which appears to be a combination of terse, informative passages from the chronicle and elaborate historiographical set pieces, such as speeches and strategems in the tradition of Thucydides. When Dexippus reaches the reign of Aurelian, no longer covered by the chronicle, the nature of the account seems to have changed to some extent. The fact that the author reused and replenished the same material in this way gives clues about his intentions when using the format of the historical monograp

Gu(n)thuríkos, ein weiterer Namensfund im Wiener Dexipp

This paper presents considerations concerning the identity and career of the Gothic military leader Gou(n)thourikos, who appears in the Scythica Vindobonensia (the Vienna Dexippus palimpsest), newly deciphered fragments on the „Scythian“ Wars of the third century. It is argued that this figure is not identical with the Gunthericus mentioned by Jordanes but a hitherto unattested character: this can be inferred by the reference to his recall from exile, which our knowledge of Gothic and Germanic parallels strongly suggests was caused by a power struggle rather than a military defeat. Moreover, the author questions the historicity of Jordanes’ report on Gunthericus. In conclusion, he outlines the impact of the new discovery and the directions scholarship may take in its wake

A Brief Reflection on the Death of Dido, with an Acrostic Coda

    Get PDF
Close study of the end of Virgil’s fourth Aeneid will demonstrate the appropriateness of the poet’s identification of the goddess Juno as “omnipotent,” in light of the curse of Dido on the Romans of the future and its manifestation in the history of the Punic Wars. Consideration of the noted acrostic Maure from earlier in the book will reveal an inadvertent prediction of Rome’s eventual success over the Carthaginian queen’s imprecations

Why do Slovak Speakers Experience Difficulties in Understanding and Using French Articles?

    Get PDF
The author of the following article aims to tackle, principally from a linguistic point of view, the reason for the difficulty surrounding the use of French articles by Slovak speakers. More precisely, the author focuses on the developmental, pragmatic, and stylistic functions that the articles fulfil in written and oral discourse. They suggest that the absence of articles in Slovak grammar is not the one and only reason why learners of French whose mother tongue is Slovak may experience difficulties employing these articles. The root of the issue in fact proves to be much more complex and can be attributed to three areas of difficulty which are experienced simultaneously. It is more a question of the difficulty associated with the grammatical and referential development of nouns in French as well as the stylistic and pragmatic nuance affiliated with articles that arises in the construction of the speaker’s communicative intention. These theoretical observations are confirmed through the learning process of French as well as through the process of translation.
