The Skeptical Deal with our Concept of External Reality
No full textThe following paper contains a new refutation of the skeptical argument concerning our knowledge of the external world. The central idea is that the argument fails because it presupposes ambiguous attributions of reality. Once these ambiguities are identified, they make the argument either trivial or equivocal. Differently from others, this refutation does not lead us to undesired results

No full textThis work presents the different forms of Cantorian paradoxes that have been proposed against all the variety of forms of Actualism in the metaphysics of modality. These Cantorian paradoxes are presented in the wider context of Cantorian paradoxes directed against the notion of “world”. The article presents two main general strategies to deal with the paradoxes: (i) the strategy of “amplification” and (ii) the strategy of “restriction”. The first strategy is proposed as the most plausible. As the problems affect in the same way all actualist theories (and even the notion of “world”), they cannot be used against any particular actualist theory of modality. The feasibility of a general amplification strategy, on the other hand, is a reason to suppose that all those theories have not much to fear from those paradoxes
Uma Reflexão a Respeito da Evolução Humana e a Natureza da Linguagem
No full textIn this paper I discuss scientific and philosophical issues related to the interdisciplinary area of Neurolinguistics, focusing on the origin and nature of human language. What kind of evolutionary process leads to the emergence of language? I propose that this process began with the adoption of bipedalism, triggering the co-evolution of new brain structures and forms of social organization. This process created a context that favoured the emergence of articulated vocalization using a combinatorial linguistic system. The identification of sufficient conditions for the emergence of human language in this context depends on the paradigm adopted for the analysis. I look for a synthesis of nativist and constructivist paradigms, showing that both contribute to an understanding of the origin and nature of human language
A Pill Against Epiphenomenalism
No full textThis paper argues that epiphenomenalism – the view that physical states cause mental states, but not vice versa – is counterintuitive. Though we cannot prove its falsehood we can give strong reasons for not believing in inefficacious mental states. In doing so, this paper claims that the well-known counter-examples like arguments from the common sense or the theory of evolution are correct. Unfortunately, many arguments against epiphenomenalism do not contain empirical facts from the neurosciences. This paper tries both to do justice to this lack and to establish a new argument against epiphenomenalism: The placebo-effect provides good reasons to hold the view that mental states are efficacious in respect to an agent´s behaviour. On the one hand it is difficult for the epiphenomenalist to explain the placebo-effect without considering the causal effects of mental states, on the other hand there are well-founded empirical studies on the placebo-effect which support the contemporary claims against an epiphenomenal view

No full textThe aim of this paper is to investigate whether Tarski’s truth definition explains the notion of truth as correspondence with reality and whether it is really a semantic definition of truth. I defend the view that, although Tarski succeeded in the task of constructing correct and adequate definitions, according to his own criteria of correctness and adequateness, the definitions obtained by his method neither are explanations of the main point of a correspondence theory of truth, the relationship between language and reality on which depends the truth of a sentence, nor can be considered genuinely semantic

No full textDie Rubrik Parteienfinanzierung im Spiegel der Rechtsprechung nimmt die im Zusammenhang mit der Finanzierung politischer Parteien oder ihnen nahestehender Organisationen ergangene Rechtsprechung in den Blick. Im Berichtsjahr 2020 entschied das Gericht der Europäischen Union (EuG) in einem Verfahren über die Gewährung einer Vorfinanzierung der Parteienfinanzierung für das Jahr 2019 an eine europäische politische Partei (ACRE), die das Europäische Parlament von vorherigen Rückzahlungen von Finanzhilfen für Konferenzen im Ausland und für eine zur Unrecht im Rechenschaftsbericht als Mitgliedsbeitrag ausgewiesene Spende einer außereuropäischen Partei abhängig gemacht hatte. Die AfD unternahm – erfolglos – einen weiteren Versuch, mit ihrer parteinahen Stiftung, der Desiderius-Erasmus-Stiftung e.V., an der staatlichen Stiftungsfinanzierung zu partizipieren und – ebenfalls erfolglos – sich dem laufenden Normenkontrollverfahren gegen die Erhöhung der absoluten Obergrenze der staatlichen Parteienfinanzierung im Wege des Beitritts zum Verfahren anzuschließen. Das BVerwG sprach das – wohl – letzte Wort in dem Verfahren um die „richtige“ Verortung als Einnahmen aus Unternehmenstätigkeit im Rechenschaftsbericht der von der PARTEI aus dem sog. „Geldhandel“ erzielten Einnahmen, der als Antwort auf den von der AfD betriebenen "Goldhandel" ins Leben gerufen wurde. Erneut ging es in einem Verfahren auch um die Gemeinnützigkeit des eingetragenen Vereins Attac. Einen Verstoß gegen das Verbot der Annahme anonymer Spenden attestierte das VG Berlin der AfD, die von Dritten finanzierte Werbemaßnahmen im baden-württembergischen Landtagswahlkampf 2016 nicht im Rechenschaftsbericht ausgewiesen hatte

No full textDas italienische Parteienrecht ist in der Entwicklung und die allenthalben übliche Unbeweglichkeit des Gesetzgebers auf diesem Gebiet kollidiert mit zwei Bedürfnissen: Ein Parteiengesetz zu schaffen, dass nicht nur eine Beschränkung, sondern auch eine Garantie für die Freiheit der Parteien selbst sein kann und einen praktischen Bedarf an Finanzmitteln zu befriedigen, obgleich eine Rückkehr zur staatlichen direkten Finanzierung nach der gerade erst vollzogenen Abkehr von einem System der (auch) öffentlichen Parteienfinanzierung nicht opportun ist. Der Beitrag setzt sich mit den Problemen und den Chancen einer künftigen Weiterentwicklung des italienischen Parteienrechts auseinander und beleuchtet insbesondere auch die Rolle näher, die der italienische Verfassungsgerichtshof dabei spielen könnte

Nonconceptualism or De Re Sense? A New Reading of Kantian Intuition
No full textThe aim of this paper is to offer a critically review the recent nonconceptualist reading of the Kantian notion of sensible intuition. I raise two main objections. First, nonconceptualist readers fail to distinguish connected but different anti-intellectualist claims in the contemporary philosophy of mind and language. Second, I will argue that nonconceptual readings fail because Kantian intuitions do not possess a representational content of their own that can be veridical or falsidical in a similar way to how the content of propositional attitudes are true of false. In this paper, I will support my own reading that sensible intuition is better seen as what Evans and McDowell (1991) have called a de re sense, whose main characteristic is object-dependence. In this sense, Kantian sensible intuitions can be seen as a sensible mode of donation of objects. In my reading, the Kantian opposition between intuitions and concepts is best seen as the opposition between the objectual de re perception of something and the propositional de dicto apperception that something is the case rather than the opposition between nonconceptual and conceptual contents. However, if Kantian sensible intuition is not a mental state with a nonconceptual content, it is certainly in the general anti-intellectualist neighborhood
