Introduction: Compliance with long-term secondary prevention guidelines in primary care settings is hampered, in part, by a shortage of health professionals in rural areas. Telemedicine has shown promise in supporting preventive care without requiring the physical relocation of professionals to underserved regions. Although many studies have shown positive outcomes with telemedicine, more evidence is needed. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of telemedicine on compliance to guidelines for blood pressure and lipid control in primary care in patients with ischaemic cardiovascular disease compared with traditional care in rural Sweden. In addition, the study investigated the effect of five years of telemedicine follow-up on improvements in blood pressure and lipid levels compared with a control health centre.
Methods: Two rural health centres in northern Sweden were included. The intervention group received regularly scheduled online video consultations between a cardiologist and the local nurses, while the control group received conventional centre-based monitoring. Patient-based registry information was collected for the period 2016-2020. Data included available measurements of systolic and diastolic blood pressure, LDL, HDL, total cholesterol and triglycerides. Compliance with the guidelines was assessed by recording the number of available blood pressure and lipid measurements from the list of eligible patients. Those with one or no measurements were considered non-compliant. Means of blood pressure and lipid measurements at two time points were estimated, followed by difference-in-difference analysis.
Results: The intervention group showed increased compliance to guideline recommendations. However, there were no statistically significant differences in blood pressure and lipid measurements over time compared with the control group.
Conclusion: The results highlight the potential of telemedicine to improve compliance to secondary cardiovascular prevention guidelines in rural primary care. This study serves as a successful model for integrating telemedicine into real-world healthcare and highlights the need for continued research and evaluation.
Introduction: Vaccine hesitancy, including concerns about possible fertility side-effects, caused delay in the uptake of COVID-19 vaccines in Canada and elsewhere. One way of tackling vaccine hesitancy is the use of infographics that explain key issues and address concerns. The aim of this study was to explore the collaborative process of rapidly developing an infographic that was informed by community feedback and tailored to address fertility concerns during urgent COVID-19 pandemic conditions.
Methods: A survey promoted through social media and focus group discussion with community contacts were used to iteratively consult target audiences and gather feedback on interpretation of the infographic’s content and meaning. Survey results were analysed using descriptive methods. A focus group discussion was analysed using inductive thematic and sentiment analysis. Feedback guided infographic development.
Results: A draft infographic and survey were shared online. 33 of 37 survey respondents expressed that they trusted the information provided in infographics. Survey respondents and focus group participants both wanted simple language and additional information to address concerns about the long-term effect of COVID-19 vaccines on fertility. Opinions indicated that more effort was needed to address varying levels of health literacy within communities. There was conflicting feedback on whether use of inclusive language by removing gender labels and focusing on biology, was helpful or confusing.
Conclusions: This study shows public feedback can help tailor content and design of vaccine confidence building tools making them more accessible to the general population. In addition, efforts to resolve specific concerns can be augmented by modifying and/or creating different versions of infographics.
A Princess of Science? Becoming the first Woman Professor in Mathematics in Modern Europe
In this paper I look at the process of becoming the first Woman Professor in Mathematics in Modern Europe by reading the personal and literary writings of Sofia Kovalevskaya. The paper emerges from a wider Leverhulme funded project of writing a feminist genealogy of “automathographies,” tracing women mathematicians’ historical emergence as subjects of scientific knowledge, as well as creators of philosophy and culture. What I argue is that it is essential to throw light onto the social, cultural, and political practices that some women mathematicians deployed in surpassing the restrictions and limitations of their gendered position and excel in the field of mathematical sciences and beyond. In this light, I initiate a process of intense memory work against a wider background within which women mathematicians’ figure as exceptional, albeit marginalized, and largely unknown subjects, and not as active agents, whose scientific, philosophical and literary work has had a huge impact on the cultural formations of modernity and beyond. By highlighting the importance of memory work, as a way of understanding the lasting effects of the past into the present, I trace new paths in the field of gender and science studies to confront women mathematicians’ marginalization within the archive and beyond
Educating the First Generation of Textile Researchers: The Drawing School for Women and the Development of Textile Research as a Field of Knowledge
This article explores the role of the Drawing School for Women (Tegneskolen for Kvinder) in the development of textile research as a field of knowledge, as well as its contribution to women’s education and social status in Denmark. Through an examination of the lives and work of early textile researchers associated with the Drawing School for Women, the article first considers the emancipatory potential of knowledge in relation to the professionalization of textile crafts. It then sheds light on the ideals and potentials expressed by the advocates of textile research – as well as how, and to what extent, these were realised. Specifically, it suggests a close relationship between textile research, women’s emancipation, and Danish nationalism. It concludes that the proponents of textile research were successful in making women’s textile craft – and the study of it – a matter of national pride and interest, furthering the opportunities for women in the field

Gender Gap in Entrepreneurial Potential in Finland and Reflecting Its Underlying Causes
The gender gap in entrepreneurship is a widely recognized phenomenon meaning that women are less likely to start a business than men. However, increased gender equality is believed to remove barriers to female entrepreneurship. We used secondary data collected for Global Entrepreneurship Monitor from 2003, 2009, 2015, and 2021 to get closer to this phenomenon in Finland, one of the most equal countries in the world. The aim of the study was to clarify the gender gap in entrepreneurship potential in Finland during recent decades, taking into account different age groups. We found that the gender gap exists in business start-up intentions and has not narrowed in the twenty-first century in any age group. A clear gender gap was also found in fear of failure in starting a business and perceived skills in entrepreneurship. Finally, the underlying causes of the gender gap in the Finnish context are discussed
