Syn-Arctic Comprehension: Envisaging a Holistic Understanding of the Contemporary and Future Arctic Ocean

    Get PDF
The relatively small, but extremely resource-rich Arctic Ocean is under considerable pressure from a resource-hungry world. Our scientific approach is often characterized by national, sectorial approaches. However, the Arctic Ocean cannot be understood, let alone managed, without an all-encompassing, pan-Arctic perspective. In natural science, first steps have been taken to achieve such a holistic understanding of the contemporary Arctic Ocean, but to support a sustainable and wisely managed Arctic Ocean in the future, the integrative work has to be carefully and wholeheartedly expanded. Suggestions, such as the integration of national investigations and the education of a future generation of scientists can improve the indispensable understanding of the entire Arctic, resulting in adequate comprehension and management

Tendencias en los problemas de salud mental entre los jóvenes y la presencia de clínicas juveniles en Suecia: Un análisis ecológico controlado de series temporales interrumpidas utilizando las encuestas Health on Equal Terms (2004 a 2021)

    No full text
Introduction: In Sweden, youth clinics (YCs) address, among other things, issues related to the mental well-being among young people. However, YCs´ impact on their mental health have not been assessed. This study aimed to: i) analyse trends in mental health outcomes (stress, anxiety and psychological distress) among young people in Sweden according to the municipal availability of YCs; and ii) assess the impact on mental health outcomes of the presence of YCs with a first-line mental health (FLMH) assignment and YCs without this assignment, as compared to municipalities without YCs. Methods: An ecological controlled interrupted time series design was applied. Annual data over 18 years (2004-2021) on self-reported stress, anxiety and psychological distress of individuals aged 16-25 were used. Thus, the mental health outcome trends in municipalities with YCs and those without YCs were compared. The prevalence ratio and their 95% confidence intervals were estimated. Results: In total, 17,174 young people aged 16–25 participated in the study. A decrease in the reporting of stress, anxiety and psychological distress was observed from 2004 to 2010, followed by an increase in all three outcomes during the period 2011–2021. Trends were not statistically significant different in municipalities with or without YCs (even among YCs with the FLMH assignment). Conclusion: The prevalence of mental ill-health has been increasing among young people in Sweden since 2011. While YCs play an important role in the prevention of mental illness, their impact on these trends could not be determined. We recommend that structural factors such as education and the labour market for youth, which are outside the scope of YCs, should be addressed to curb these trends.

“If I lose my mind, she will take care of me.”: The importance of relational autonomy and legal planning in later life

Personal autonomy is among the core values of modern Western liberalism, but what is the precise meaning of this term, and why is autonomy valued so highly? What if one is no longer fully capable of self-determination, as may be the case as we grow old? In this article, we clarify the meaning of personal autonomy, claim that its importance is connected to its contribution to human well-being, and introduce some legal instruments with which to support the autonomy of older people. We illustrate our theoretical and legal analysis by drawing on the actual experiences of older people in Finland. Our empirical material supports the theoretical claims about autonomy’s importance, its connection to well-being, and its relational nature. However, this article also reveals that people should be more aware of the importance of engaging in legal planning in advance to ensure an autonomous life until the end of their lifespans

Printing School Democracy from Below: Student Press Activities as Collective Action in Mid-Post-War Sweden

This article deals with the growth of a national school student press in Sweden during the 1950s and first half of the 1960s. It outlays the role of student magazines in furthering school democracy by investigating the nationwide periodical SECO-aktuellt and the press organisation SVEP (Svensk Elevpress). The article departs from an understanding of press activity among school youth as a form of collective action during the mid-post-war period. This activity became part of a pupil movement that demanded increased influence and participation in decision making, as well as expanded forms of self-government. Drawing from earlier historical research, the article portrays this press activity as taking place “from below” since youth often was marginalised in the past and not always seen as legitimate historical actors. The article also deploys perspectives from research on social movements, and analyses school student press activities in Sweden as “repertoires of contention.

Female Friendship in the World of Higher Learning: The Entangled Lives of Grethe Hjort/Greta Hort (1903–1967) and Julie Moscheles (1892–1956)

During WW2, the Danish scholar of English literature Grethe Hjort developed a close friendship with the Czech-Jewish geographer Julie Moscheles. Their paths crossed in Melbourne, and afterwards they settled in Prague. When Moscheles died in 1956, Hjort returned to Denmark to become only the second female professor at Aarhus University in 1958. Based on a study of private correspondence, this article has three interlinked intentions. Firstly, I explore the two women’s entangled lives and their encounters with the world of academia during peacetime and war. Secondly, I situate their biographies in a historical context in light of the academic paths followed by modern young women of the interwar generation, who experienced education as a gateway to independence from conventional gender norms. Finally, the article offers an affective sensibility that adds to the conceptualization of scholarly personae

Charity and Global Solidarity - A Dying Idealism?

    Get PDF
This opinion piece raises concerns about whether solidarity can remain broad or will narrow to self-interest-driven initiatives, compounded by current aid policies linking assistance to trade benefits and redirecting development funds closer to home. My Rotary group took on a project supporting the Galkayo Education Center for Peace and Development (GECPD) in Somalia, founded by women’s rights activist Hawa Aden Mohammed. The project, driven by her vision, emphasized education for girls, addressing inequalities tied to poverty and cultural practices like female genital mutilation. Over three years, we funded a teaching position and covered school fees for underprivileged students. By connecting local and global actions, this effort exemplifies how solidarity can transcend geographical and cultural divides. Working in such initiatives not only contributes to social change but also offers personal growth, underscoring the enduring value of innovative engagement models in an evolving world

The Landscape of Longing and Belonging: Temporality in the Kola Sami Writer Askold Bazhanov’s Poetry

The article examines Kola Sami literature, focusing on the autobiographical nature poetry written by the Skolt Sami author Askold Bazhanov (1934–2012) in the 1970s–2000s. The focus is on landscape and temporality in the contexts of Sami and Soviet literature, especially the literatures of small northern peoples. What characterises Bazhanov’s nature-centred texts in general is the complex way in which temporality and human and non-human existence are manifested in the northern landscape described. As a case study, the article examines nostalgic discourses, which in Bazhanov’s texts are associated with longing for the childhood landscape in Sami villages that were submerged in the 1960s. These discourses are often combined with romanticised idyllic depictions of reindeer herder life, which I analyse as arctic pastorals. In Bazhanov’s nature poetry, the temporality of the landscape, particularly the Sami history conveyed within the landscape that is described as strongly local, is an important means by which the identity and agency of the poems’ speakers are constructed and reinforced
