    Gamification in innovation teams

    No full text
The paper examines the relationship between gamification – the use of game elements in non-gaming contexts – and innovation teams’ outcomes. It builds on psychological and teamwork theories, arguing that gamification overcomes collaboration issues and generates multiple positive outcomes, particularly in coordination, alignment, engagement, and teams’ motivation. The research follows a qualitative theory-driven using a case study of an innovation project. The conceptual model built through the findings offers valuable insights about applying gamification in innovation teams, namely: i) surprising teams with such a new and playful approach reduces stress among team members; ii) rules and time constraints play a crucial role in teams’ coordination by avoiding dispersion and enhancing focused efforts. The paper provides a set of testable theoretical propositions derived from the conceptualization of gamification in the context of innovation teams. It supports innovation managers interested in measuring gamification outcomes in teams

Supporting a sustainable and engaging online transition for co-design through gamification

    No full text
Co-design approach is increasingly popular in many organizations that address global change and social sustainability challenges, thanks to its unique and diverse methods of engaging relevant people in design processes and decision-making. However, the social distancing led by the COVID-19 pandemic seriously problematized the traditional in-person co-design activities. A sustainable online transition is unprecedentedly pressing. By acknowledging the limitations of online co-design, i.e., lack of means for participant engagement, we argue that gamification holds great promise for online co-design. This paper presents an empirical study to investigate this potential qualitatively. Based on the data collected from three gamified online co-design implementations, we examine the benefits of gamification and how future activities should be designed and implemented from the participants’ perspectives. Based on the participants’ perceptions, we propose several recom-mendations for designing impactful gamification. The finding suggests that gamification can facilitate online co-design activities in an enjoyable, relaxing, structuring, and creative manner, since they are perceived and recognized by the participants. Moreover, the successful implementation of online co-design implies that great sustainability benefits can be achieved through online transition, i.e., reducing paper consumption and time spent on meetings and unproductive discussions, supporting extensive diversity and density in representation. Online can enable this by overcoming not only the geographic and time limitations but also relevant social issues

Towards an interpretation of the Portuguese cultural tourist: Motivations and constraints

    No full text
The importance of cultural tourism for the development of tourist destinations has created a need for knowledge on both supply and demand sides, related to the motivations and constraints which can affect the decisions of the cultural tourist. The aim of this study is to develop and validate for the Portuguese tourists two scales to measure motivations to travel and its constraints, considering theories of needs and constraints, and to examine differences according to tourists’ socio-demographic characteristics. The scales were determined using a non-linear principal component analysis followed by bootstrap confirmatory factor analysis, and differences were examined using parametric tests. A six-dimensional model for motivations and a five-dimensional model for constraints were validated, both with good overall fit. Motives linked to culture, intellectual curiosity and cultural knowledge stand out with high levels of relevance. Lack of resources and other commitments are the most important constraints. Significant differences were found in almost all characteristics. The results reveal influential dimensions on travel decisions which are of utmost importance for the design of the cultural offer of destinations

    No full text
Objective: To explore the quality of maternal and newborn care (QMNC) during the COVID-19 pandemic by facility type among 16 European countries, comparing rates of instrumental vaginal birth and cesarean. Methods: Women who gave birth in the WHO European Region from March 1, 2020, to February 7, 2022, answered a validated online questionnaire. Rates of instrumental birth, instrumental vaginal birth, and cesarean, and a QMNC index were calculated for births in public versus private facilities. Results: Responses from 25 206 participants were analyzed. Women giving birth in private compared with public facilities reported significantly more frequent total cesarean (32.5% vs 19.0%; aOR 1.70; 95% CI 1.52–1.90), elective cesarean (17.3% vs 7.8%; aOR 1.90; 95% CI 1.65–2.19), and emergency cesarean before labor (7.4% vs 3.9%; aOR 1.39; 95% CI 1.14–1.70) (P < 0.001 for all comparisons), with analyses by country confirming these results. QMNC index results were heterogeneous across countries and regions in the same country and were largely affected by geographical distribution of regions rather than by type of facility alone. Conclusion: The study confirms that births in private facilities have higher odds of cesarean. It also suggests that QMNC should be closely monitored in all facilities to achieve high-quality care, independent of facility type or geographical distribution

Addressing glocalization challenges through design-driven innovation approaches

    No full text
The aim of this paper is to explore a relevant conceptual limitation in the literature on Glocalization approaches, when firms deploy their innovation strategies. For that, traditional Local Global and Glocal approaches to serve different types of markets are analyzed and dealt with through a series of case studies. Although glocalization has been researched in many dimensions, the link between glocalization and the design-driven innovation approaches has not been extensively considered in the literature. For bridging the research gap, this paper adopts a design-driven glocalization framework that makes a cross-comparison of several cases of design-driven innovation approaches, which are drawn from the existing theory. Findings show that design driven approaches have the power to engage stakeholders from academia, industries and society in the globalization or/and localization strategies of products/services/business models to different markets and users. Findings also support the conclusion that design-driven approaches facilitate the expression of emotional factors in cultural products, strengthen interactions among individuals, supporting the creation of new visions that intertwine objects and the environment. As a result, design-driven approaches help deliver not only great user experiences, but also support the personalization of different concepts

Perceived financial well-being as antecedent of psychological well-being: Evidence from Brazil

    No full text
Purpose: This study investigates how the relationship between perceived financial well-being and psychological well-being is influenced by income loss in the context of the adverse economic and social conditions resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic. Method: A survey conducted with 959 Brazilian respondents allowed the research hypotheses to be tested by means of multigroup structural equation models. Originality / Relevance: Individuals who reported having experienced larger income losses also reported lower levels of financial and psychological well-being. Among the predictors of psychological well-being we tested, expected future financial security is the most important. Results: Our findings show that after controlling for gender, age, and income, current money management stress and expected future financial security (the present and future dimensions of perceived financial well-being, respectively), but not financial knowledge, are statistically significant to explain psychological well-being. Theoretical / Methodological contributions: The role of financial knowledge to predict financial well-being is weakened in the presence of the psychological variables investigated, which has important implications for financial education efforts. Banks and other financial institutions can create tools to enhance personal awareness and responsibility over one’s financial future. Social / Managerial contributions: Managerial and societal implications include the provision of knowledge that may allow financial education programmes, economic empowerment interventions, and public policies aimed at reducing the negative impact of the perceived financial strain on well-being to be better targeted

Crafting political gestures of locality: The transposition of artisanal traditions in the artwork of Catarina Branco

    No full text
This article seeks to shed light on the transposition of traditional crafts related to the popular religion of the Azores into the secular context of art in the works of Catarina Branco, taking two of the artist’s exhibitions – Fez-se Luz, 2012, and Alminhas, 2013 – as case studies. The research first shows how this transposition leads to the cross-fertilization of the religious and artistic domains, imbuing art with greater spirituality and introducing reflections concerning contemporary issues, such as emigration and the position of women into the context of religion. Second, I discuss how the contingent nature of craft in art is used as a disruptive element that liberates the imagination, thought and feelings, dismantling hierarchies between the manual and the intellectual, the masculine and the feminine, as well as those between religion, art and craft, through embodied gesture. Religion is here understood in its wider sense as a form of mediation of the transcendent (Meyer 2009). I argue that these works can be seen as a political gesture, which highlights the past of women who lived in anonymity, simultaneously preserving and renewing traditional crafts that are dying out while also deconstructing the false dichotomy between the manual and the intellectual or spiritual. The act of papercutting gives physical form to the experiences of Azorean women, while at the same time addressing questions relevant to the human condition, including migration and the eternal search for transcendence. Through its inevitable polysemy, this act reveals meanings that have been hidden by habit, allowing the viewer to rediscover them

Understanding the brand management and rebranding processes in specific contexts of medical tourism

    No full text
With this chapter, the authors intend to understand the importance of brand management (specifically rebranding) in specific contexts of medical tourism and health and wellness. The case study will include an example of the medical tourism segment in Portugal. This research is particularly relevant for Portugal because it is necessary to ensure the sustainability of the health system, as health expenditures are mostly publicly funded. Models and best rebranding practices will be studied in the health and wellness sector in Portugal (e.g., medical tourism). The chapter starts with a conceptual framework based on branding and rebranding models. From this theoretical base, the concepts and models are derived. This study aims at discussing brand management in healthcare management and medical tourism contexts. From an interdisciplinary perspective, this research brings together inputs from relationship marketing, medical tourism, and healthcare management (service excellence)

A timeline model for clinical events: Empowering data

    No full text
Data visualization is key in the Big Data context, enabling different cognitive perspectives over large datasets. These visual perspectives can prompt relevant advantages with regard to healthcare records, because they may contribute to a faster, more understandable, and adequate way to capture patients' health history and overall condition, thus improving healthcare quality. Timelines are well-known visual artifacts that help healthcare professionals to visualize patients' electronic health records (EHR) over a time period. As data stored in EHR tend to quickly grow with each interaction between patient and healthcare system both number and size, traditional linear timelines are can increasingly become more difficult to manage visually, as they often span over different screens. Considering that a holistic analysis is desirable to provide proper and quality health services, data visualization should enable a seamless understanding of patients' health history and overall condition. When dealing with critical episodes - such as an emergency - where time is an important factor, this is even more decisive. Furthermore, traditional timelines do not support multidimensional data representation. This paper presents a new visual model of time-dependent EHR based on radial models. It is capable of simultaneously displaying several data categories that characterize patients' medical history, enabling medical professionals to be aware of different data categories over time in a single display, without the need to scroll between screens

Augmented reality to improve public awareness and safety at the beach

    No full text
Rip currents pose a threat to the safety of bathers at most beaches around the world. The proposed research includes the specification of a platform to empower the user to become active beach-safety agents. To achieve this strategic goal, a service design approach was implemented to conceptualize a solution for collecting data about potential hazards, including information about the status of active rip currents. The innovation is settled over the combination of immersive technologies (e.g., Augmented Reality) with visual data analytics and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Mobile Augmented Reality mixed with a gamification strategy is also considered in the architectural design to specify a mobile tool that provides an interactive and gamified environment for promoting a safe beach experience. The presented approach also addresses a strategy to create a social movement challenging citizen to integrate and benefit from the services and informational artifacts provided by the Beach Safety Community (BSC)
