Managing Experts in the Knowledge Economy by Enneagram

    No full text
The purpose of this paper is to analyse how the Enneagram may be used to help the knowledge management (KM) made by experts. Experts are the stars among knowledge workers, and they manage more knowledge than the average worker. The Enneagram is a complex dynamic system to evaluate human personality, human motives and the way how people think and behave. The exercise is not new; for centuries the Christian, Judaist and Islam churches used the Enneagram for the management and development of high church officials, who could definitely be classified as knowledge workers. The Enneagram works with nine personality types, three subtypes, and nine levels of personal development. It also recognises special interrelations between types based on an individual's particular life situation. All the mentioned factors together enable us to understand individual's behaviour, to predict it, influence it and also to help the individual's future development in accordance to his abilities and strong features. We used information from the Enneagram's organization, and on the various types of leaders selected by the Enneagram website, and analysed that information in the light of the known theories on KM. We concluded that each one of the nine type of the Enneagram personality is linked to a prominent facet of KM: 1) Values, Change and unlearning 2) Knowledge networks; 3) Knowledge leaders; 4)Thinking out the box;; 5) Creation of knowledge; 6) Trust.; 7) Risk; 8) Charisma; 9)Servant leaders respectively. The practical implication of the paper is that not all the experts manage knowledge equally, and that they have different priorities on KM according to their personality type. The paper is limited because it is basically a first attempt and should be completed by extensive and deep empirical studies

Social intelligence is a favorable condition for career decision-making and development. The social intelligence indices of Portuguese students in school years prior to a career transition are characterized and intra and interindividual differences are analyzed. Participants were 1095 students (552, 50.4% women) with a mean age of 14.78 years (SD = 1.86), in the 8th (542, 49.5%), 10th (295, 26.9%) and 11th (258, 23.6%) grades. The Cognitive Test of Social Intelligence (PCIS) was administered at two moments, six months apart. Results indicate that the 8th grade obtained higher average scores in Problem Solving, Motivation and Self-confidence (time 1), while the 10th grade obtained better results in Problem Solving, Motivation and Familiarity (time 2). Between the assessment moments, all school years register an increase in Problem Solving and Self-confidence in social situations. These results constitute favorable psychological conditions for the promotion of ethical questioning in career guidance interventions

Why is it difficult to grasp the impacts of the Portuguese quality assurance system?

    No full text
This article analyses the impacts of the Portuguese quality assurance system on academic cultures, using the Cultural Theory proposed by Douglas (1970, 1982) and developed by Thompson, Ellis and Wildavsky (1990) as an explanatory framework for Portuguese academics' preference formation in relation to quality assessment. The Portuguese higher education system has been undergoing a change of paradigm by moving from traditional collegial system to a legal framework influenced by New Public Management. The former institutional context, where academic collegiality was the basis of democratic decision, promoted the egalitarian way of life, where the group dimension is stronger. However, recent legislation has promoted two different logics. On the one hand it has decreased the influence of the group dimension by favouring individualistic values and beliefs. On the other, it has reinforced the grid dimension through greater centralisation of power and separation of roles of universities and polytechnics, thus promoting the hierarchic way of life. The new legislation framework has produced changes that have strongly modified traditional governance structures and mechanisms and are likely to affect academics' perceptions of quality assurance processes and impacts as much as they influence the development of beliefs and values

    No full text
Digital education is growing faster due to several factors, namely, the Covid-19 pandemic. Universities and other educational institutions had to quickly respond to this new environment by giving an unparalleled focus to digital and online education. Therefore, the purpose of this chapter is to bring light to what digital education is and to the main pedagogical trends connected with it and to answer the question: what are the opportunities and limitations of hybrid and online education? In this chapter, we report a case-study approach centered on the use of technology based pedagogical resources. We concluded that online learning may have several positive contributions such as, flexibility, comfort, and innovation. Also, digital education could encourage a proactive attitude in students, and facilitate the learning of other interactive methodologies. The results have implications on how university teachers make use of technology and pedagogical resources, to effectively facilitate hybrid and online classe
