Sustainability and the circular economy business development
Currently, there has been a tendency for companies to focus on the development of their businesses following circular economy trends associated with sustainability. European Community guidelines have established deadlines for the implementation of management strategies that allow creating and maintaining an effective and resource-efficient economic system, reducing the amount of energy and materials used in production. This study aims to analyze the existing literature review on the integration of sustainability and circular economy (CE) principles into business development. The research methodology is a systematic literature review using the SCOPUS database, in which 97 academic articles were analyzed after exclusion using keywords. The findings show that, after the analysis carried out in VOSviewer, business development, and circular economy are themes studied by many authors, with links related to the theme of sustainability. The conclusions indicate that CE and sustainability are interlinked, and companies must implement appropriate sustainability and CE strategies to increase their competitiveness and improve resource efficiency. These strategies can integrate innovative technologies, the use of sharing platforms, extending the useful life of products, recovering resources to minimize waste, and integrating sustainability concepts into business
Prior de San Juan, justador castellano del Cancioneiro Geral, de Garcia de Resende (1516)
According to Garcia de Resende, the Prior of San Juan is one of the participants in the poetic jousts that took place during the wedding celebrations between the Portuguese crown prince, the infant Afonso, son of the kings of Portugal, D. João II and D. Leonor, and the princess Isabel, the heir of the future Catholic Kings. The relative position of this participant in the aforementioned game suggests an importance which understanding is complex for historical, political, diplomatic and poetic reasons. Through the analysis of the poetic creation assigned to the Prior of San Juan, of the paratextual data that frame it and of secondary historical sources on this figure who dialogues, at the same time, with the religious, military and political dimensions of peninsular history at the end of the 15th century, this article is dedicated to deepen the knowledge and to discuss the meaning of the inscription of the Prior of San Juan and his invention in the Cancioneiro Geral de Garcia de Resende (1516)
Digital management of employer branding in companies in Spain and Portugal
Up Start–Creative Industries. Assemblage for immigrant integration and creative heritage preservation
The Up Start-Creative Industries is the result of a collaboration between the Aga Khan Foundation and the University of Évora (UÉ), financed by the Portugal Social Innovation program. It focuses on a synergy founded in design for social innovation, heritage, and management. Within this collaboration, the UÉ has been conducting research on constructing an alternative economic model based on socio-cultural innovation and creative ways with disenfranchised individuals. The hypothesis advanced by the Up Start initiative is based on the possibility of leveraging participants’ income and improving living conditions for the communities involved – migrant groups from the Lisbon metropolitan area – through the development of cultural and creative industries, beginning with the identification and mapping of methods, arts, and crafts created by migrants from their cultural heritage.
The paper is composed of three parts: the first part critically analyses the network of interactions between all actors involved in the project, the creation of the Bandim cooperative, and the production of handicrafts, in the light of the concept of assemblage, by the philosophers Deleuze and Guattari; the second part investigates how the preservation of cultural heritage is a key factor for the development of an alternative form of entrepreneurship of disenfranchised people; and the third and last part makes a critical reflection on how Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and e-commerce can improve communication, access to information, collaboration, and economic sustainability of social and cultural projects such as the Bandim cooperative
Looking back to 1850 in 2025: Historascan to digitize historical journals
This chapter analyses current technologies and the challenges involved in extracting and classifying articles and news headlines from historical journals, as well as converting images to text format. The work to develop a tool focused on digitising historical journals was carried out by a multidisciplinary team of experts in media studies, artificial intelligence, image processing, and cultural heritage preservation. The data used derives from two historic Portuguese journals, Diário de Notícias and Jornal de Notícias, which were created in the mid- 19th century. This project is based on a mixture of heuristics, computer vision, pattern recognition, and other artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques. The main challenges included the variability in the design of historical journals, preserving the quality of images over time, and continuously improving image processing and OCR techniques to adapt to different styles and periods of newspapers
Improving sustainable supply chains using blockchain technology
Blockchain is considered a disruptive technology and its impact goes beyond the economy, as it can transform the supply chains' social, economic, and environmental performance, leading to a more sustainable supply chain. This study presents a Systematic Bibliometric Literature Review (LRSB) of research on the correlation between blockchain technology and sustainability. The review integrated 61 scientific and/or academic documents indexed in SCOPUS presenting up‐to‐date knowledge on current insights on the various ways blockchain technology drives sustainability. The LRSB provide findings that can be used to exploit the sustainable opportunities created. For instance, blockchain-supported technologies can provide value creation opportunities, support humanitarian causes, trace production aspects such as gas emissions and energy consumption, among others
Are we adequately measuring patient satisfaction with telemedicine? A systematic review with a meta-analysis
Telemedicine has gained significant attention
as an effective means of providing health care remotely,
particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Patient satisfaction
is a critical aspect of implementing telemedicine, but
we have no comprehensive understanding of satisfaction
levels and the associated factors. The aim of this systematic
review and meta-analysis was to assess patient satisfaction
related to telemedicine consultations and to identify key factors
influencing satisfaction levels.
Results: The search yielded a total of 147 cross-sectional
studies, of which 107 met the criteria for inclusion in the
meta-analysis. Overall, patient satisfaction with teleconsultations
was found to be high, with satisfaction levels
ranging from 38 to 100 on a scale of 0 to 100. Only a small
percentage (2.72%) of the studies reported satisfaction levels
below 75%. Surprisingly, most studies used nonvalidated satisfaction questionnaires, which highlight the need for the
development of standardized measurement instruments.
Conclusions: This systematic review and meta-analysis
provide evidence that patients generally exhibit high levels
of satisfaction with telemedicine consultations. The use of
nonvalidated satisfaction questionnaires in many studies,
however, suggests a need for more standardized assessment
tools. Factors such as the time interval between the consultation
and the assessment were found to influence satisfaction
levels. Understanding these factors can help health care
providers improve telemedicine services and patient–provider
relationships and optimize health care delivery in the context
of telemedicine. Further research is warranted to develop
validated satisfaction measurement instruments and explore
any additional factors that influence patient satisfaction with
telemedicine
Generative AI in Hotel Marketing – A Reality Check
This paper verifies the capacity of generative AI (ChatGPT in particular) to design a marketing strategy for a hotel by using the example of a 5-star property in the centre of Lisbon. The indicative solutions and reflexive tactics suggested by Dwivedi et al. (2023) were used to develop the prompts based on which ChatGPT designed the hotel's marketing strategy. The proposed approach incorporates the marketing mix elements, including digital marketing tips, the competitive set definition, a name for a marketing campaign, a logo, identification of an appropriate partner and suggested cross-selling actions. This is one of the first attempts to utilise generative AI to design a marketing strategy for a product/service. The findings of this research verify the previous assumption that ChatGPT can write it
Factors influencing adoption of construction technologies in Vietnam’s residential construction projects
Purpose: Vietnam's construction technology (CT) adoption is low when compared to other countries with similar gross domestic product (GDP) per capita resulting in lesser productivity. The research objectives are: (1) To undertake an extensive literature review on CT adoption challenges; (2) To investigate CT adoption challenges unique to Vietnam's construction sector; and (3) To propose data-driven solutions for a greater rate of CT adoption. Design/methodology/approach: A two-stage descriptive survey method was adopted in alignment with the research aim and objectives. Based on the literature review of 215 articles, a questionnaire was designed and administered to experienced construction managers (CM) to identify whether CT has been adopted, barriers to adoption, drivers, and the most popular CT tools. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the characteristics of interest in the empirical dataset and SPSS-based inferential statistics to estimate the means, frequency counts, variance and test hypotheses that informed the drawing of conclusions concerning the research objectives. Findings: The popular CT tools identified were Autodesk, Microsoft Office and Primavera. The most influential CT adoption barriers: (1) Unknow`n impact on productivity, (2) Late implementation of software in construction projects, (3) Lack of understanding of importance and needs in the construction industry (4) Lack of funds during budget planning for technological advances and implementation (5) Lack of experts required for technological change, and insufficient skills in the industry. Practical implications: It is expected that the findings could inform data-driven regulatory and practice reforms targeted at increasing greater uptake of CT in Vietnam with potential for replication in countries facing similar adoption challenges. Originality/value: The findings are intended to support data-driven regulatory and practice improvements aimed at improving CT adoption in Vietnam, with the possibility for replication in other countries facing comparable problems
