Mos patrius e pater ignominiosus
IV.6
e Cato Maior de senectute XI.37The article takes into account the concept of mos patrius as it is formed and evolves from
the origins of Rome's history to the Augustan age. In this way, reference is made to the fear of the
father and the terror of patricide in ancient societies and, in particular, in the Roman experience. The
concept of mos patrius, as well as the binomial pater familias-pater patriae, together with the problem
posed by the censorial commination of ignominia, are analysed in two famous Ciceronian passages,
de Rep. IV.6 and Cato Maior de senectute XI.3
Development of edible coating functionalized with hydroxyapatite, complexed with bioactive compounds for the shelf-life extension of food products
2021 - 2022The main goal of food packaging is to protect the food from physical,
chemical and biological contaminations. The environmental impact of
conventional food packaging directed research towards new packaging
strategies based on environmentally friendly and biodegradablenatural
polymers. The nature of biopolymers influences the physicochemical and
mechanical properties of films and coatingssuch as mechanical stability,
transparency, moisture and gas barrier. Generally, polysaccharides are
employed to avoid gas permeability, lipids limit water vapour transmission,
and proteins improve the mechanical stability of the structure.
Anovel way to preserve the safety of food products and prolong their shelf
life is represented by the incorporationinto edible coatingsof active
compounds, such as nutrients, antioxidants, antimicrobials, colorants, and
flavorings, which are mainly used to improve the functional properties of
coatings. However, the poor stability of these bioactive compoundsunder
processing conditions and during storage makes it necessary to use a carrier
system for the release of the compound from the coating to the product
surface.
Among severalcarriersystems adopted to protect active compounds,
hydroxyapatite crystals seem to be attractive candidates for this application.
Hydroxyapatiteis a calcium phosphate similar to that present in the human
hard tissues as regard morphology and composition. It is used especially for
the fabrication of inorganic scaffolds for bone replacement and tissue
engineering. Thanks to its structure and composition, this mineral is able to
chemically interact with different organic molecules such as proteins and
antimicrobial peptides, representing a potential carrier for the delivery of
bioactive compounds in the development of active systems.
On the basis of the above considerations, my research project has been
focused on the development and optimization of an alginate-based edible
coating enriched with hydroxyapatite crystals complexed with active
compounds, for the shelf life extension of food products.
Among active compounds, the flavonoid quercetinhas been already used in
different active systems mainly for its antioxidant capacity; However, my
interest was also focused on its potential antimicrobial activity. The results on
antimicrobial activity of quercetin glycoside compounds against
Pseudomonas fluorescens, one of the most abundant Gram negative bacteria
responsible for meat and meat products spoilageon obtained, showed a total
bacterial reduction at 1000 mg/L and 500 mg/L of quercetin,Similar results
were obtained when quercetin was loaded into hydroxyapatite structure, at
the same quercetin amount. [...] [edited by Author]XXXV cicl

Statistical Learning for business decision making: from big data to informative data
2021 - 2022In this thesis, we will pitch out these four aspects that are fundamental in modern businesses.
The first aspect is about the growing importance of Statistics in business, which has two purposes:
synthesizing and generalizing.
Synthesizing means preparing the data collected in form (tables, graphs, numerical summaries) that
enables a better understanding of the phenomena for which the survey was carried out. Synthesis
meets the need for simplification, which stems from the human mind's limited capacity to handle
articulated, complex, or multidimensional information. Descriptive Statistics is a specific field of
Statistics that describe how to use techniques that allow a comprehensive study of a large amount of
quantitative and qualitative information to highlight its characteristics, links, differences or
associations among the variables surveyed.
Generalizing means extending the result of the analysis performed on a limited group of statistical
units (sample) data to the entire community to which it belongs (universe, population). This operation
of generalizing is carried out according to methods of induction, which represent the content of
Inferential Statistics.
With the Inferential Statistics and Decision Theory closely related to the calculus of probability, it is
possible to understand and interpret uncertain or random events and suggest rational rules of behavior
and decision-making. ..

nazionale. From the Sixties and the Seventies institutions and museums devoted to rural culture have spread in Trentino-South Tyrol, following a national movement; nevertheless, nowadays there isn’t a museography and museology analysis about these borderlands’ realities. This article wants to focus on the two most significant experiences in this region, after a brief excursus on the fascist event. The outputs underline that the museal narration
related to the same object, the rural cultural, could be differ and not in these conterminous provinces, creating a
peculiar movement inside the national context
Mapping Our Digital Menagerie: A Monster Manual for the Megadungeon
Relying on a comparison between the complex spatial organization of our current digital ecosystem and the ones from dungeons in role-playing games, this article analyzes the multiple entities that populate our computers, smartphones and video game consoles. Trolls, bugs, worms, conversational AI agents, NPCs, daemons, ghosts, Trojan horses and others are presented and discussed with a focus on their different degree of agency, ranging from human-controlled to having a certain degree of autonomy. By addressing how we coexist with such beings, this paper contributes to the nascent field of digital folklore
The thesis investigates the phenomenon of international trafficking of cultural goods and its
interaction with the activity of criminal and terrorist organizations.
To this end, the research starts from the examination of the international, European and internal
norms aimed at the protection of cultural heritage and traces the evolution of the jurisprudence of
the international criminal tribunals in the fields of war crimes and against the humanity for
devastation and plunder of cultural heritage and property.
The pivot of the work is, however, constituted by the critical examination of the Italian law of 9
March 2022, n. 22, containing provisions on crimes against cultural heritage, which systematically
reorganizes the existing discipline with a view to a tendential tightening of the sanctions.
In particular, the Italian Law intends to align it with the measures aimed at preventing and
combating illicit trafficking and the destruction of cultural property set out in the Nicosia
Convention, concluded by the Council of Europe in 2017 and entered into force on 1 April 2022. To his end, it also includes some tools to combat transnational organized crime provided for by the
Palermo Convention
Pursuant to Protocol no. 2 annexed to the Union Treaties the Italian
Parliament activated its competence to intervene regarding the proposal for a directive
presented by the European Commission as part of a "package" designed, among other
things, to react to problems raised by the Qatargate case. In particular, the proposed
directive has been unexpectedly criticized in Parliament because of its incursions into
the criminal field, considered ultraneous by the majority of the “Politiche dell’Unione
europea” Commission of the Chamber of Deputies. The contribution underlines the
wide competences of the European Union, which legitimize its exercise in the field of
combating corruption as a “particularly serious criminal conduct” of transnational
dimension, while not neglecting the need to proceed with corrections of the proposal
within the context of the process of adopting the European directive.È recente l’attivazione da parte del Parlamento italiano della propria
The paper is the reworking of a speech given at the Conference entitled
“European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms and the Italian
legal system: New substantive and procedural developments” held at the University
of Salerno on 17 April 2023. The subject of the speech illustrates the characteristics
of the defence of the State Attorney, in particular in international fora. It describes
the modalities of litigation before the ECtHR in the light of the normative changes
introduced in the national legal system since 2018 and in the perspective of a systemic
approach that takes into account the characteristics of the defensive activity carried
out both before the national (Constitutional Court, Court of Cassation, Council of
State) and the European supranational courts, underlining similarities and
differences. The tasks of the Agent of the Government and the State Attorney in the
advisory phase are also briefly explained. The role of the State Attorney is described
in the context of the principles of subsidiarity and proximity, emphasising its essential
role in supporting the Administration to be defended and ensuring connection and dialogue between the European Court of Human Rights and the national courts.
Finally, a brief mention is made to the respect of human rights in wartime.
e ordinamento italiano: Nuovi Sviluppi sostanziali e procedurali” tenutosi
sovranazionali europee, mettendone in evidenza affinità e differenze.
Application of BIM methodology for structural inspection and maintenance ECO-Systems: semi-automated monitoring procedures to implement different kinds of data into Enriched COoperative Systems
2020 - 2021The main objective of the present thesis work is to develop an efficient methodology for setting up and
managing up-to-date and updatable Monitoring ECO-Systems, intended as Enriched COoperative Systems. It
is thus organised into twelve chapters clustered in three main parts. The first part covers an introduction to
Building Information Modelling [BIM], Structural Health Monitoring [SHM], and the overall standardised
Scan-To-BIM methodology proposed hereto. Subsequently, the second part presents a procedural and semiautomated methodology within the framework of the macro Scan-to-BIM approach for the digitisation of the
Italian Infrastructure Heritage, particularly focusing on bridges, viaducts, and overpasses. The pilot case study
for the developed procedure is the Olivieri Viaduct (Salerno, Italy). On the other hand, the third part deals with
automated procedures for the integration of data from sensors in a BIM environment, developed on the Temple
of Neptune (Paestum, Italy). It was chosen for the extensive existing database and for the possibility of
integrating data from the innovative system of seismometers recently arranged for monitoring microdisplacements. Therefore, this application allows to implement pieces of information from both active sensors
– i.e., Terrestrial Laser Scanners [TLS] and Seismometers – and passive sensors – i.e., cameras mounted on
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles [UAV].
As explained in the first part, in a more distinctively figurative way, we could exhaustively describe the
Building Information Modelling [BIM] methodology as the ideal combination of symbolic representation –
starting from the cavemen’s drawing and fast-forwarding to the 3D digital twins of the physical world – and
numerical modelling – that indeed dates back to the Greeks, i.e., Pythagoras. However, much like the prisoners
of the cave of the well-known Plato’s allegory, we are every day more convinced that the digital reproduction
of the phenomenal world can become itself the reality. If not, at the very least, it can flawlessly mirror it. On
the contrary, it is not to forget that the whole experience of the world is just not equal to the objective reality,
may this even exist, but a version of it mediated by our observation, thus a discretisation of it, no matter how
faithful it may come to be, should never propose as the absolute truth.
The concept of Structural Health Monitoring [SHM] is relatively recent too. Starting from the early years of
the 21st century, the problem of monitoring the physical-chemical-mechanical conditions of structures and
infrastructures for civil use began to be thought of in a significantly different way than in the last century.
Indeed, over the previous twenty years, it has been realised that novel construction materials, such as reinforced
concrete and pre-stressed steel may have a long life but not an indefinitely long one. More has also been
understood regarding materials of the past, i.e., wood. Thus, it has become clear that carrying out correct and
methodical maintenance is essential and can significantly extend the useful life of a structure or infrastructure.
All these arguments have then led to the definition of the modern concept of structural health and the need for
its monitoring, similarly to what happens to human health.
Furthermore, specifically for the highly historicised Italian territory, SHM constitutes a good tool for the
historical and architectural heritage to enhance the management of the assets. Particularly, the Guidelines for
risk classification and management, safety assessment and monitoring of existing bridges underline the
importance of predictive models. It then appears clear how current experimentation focuses always more on
conjugating the SHM numerical modelling with the BIM modelling technology, often employing advanced programming tools – such as Visual Programming Language [VPL] script – so as to add visualisation to asset
management systems, to provide a highly beneficial cognitive aid for processing overwhelming amounts of
information.
As a result of the presented considerations, it arises the main objective of the present thesis project, i.e., the
development of a methodology for long-term management in a BIM environment of structural monitoring
Enriched COoperative Systems [ECO-Systems], which falls within the topics of the ninth sustainable goal –
Industry, innovation, and infrastructure.
The monitoring ECO-system is designed as an open environment that needs continuous input to maintain its
order; the inputs will be represented by up-to-date and updatable information, in order for the ECO-system to
function properly. It is therefore imperative when organising a facility management BIM system to clearly
establish implementation and data management procedures, i.e., to define the so-called Common Data
Environment [CDE, in italian Ambiente di Condivisione Dati – ACDat]. The proposed methodology moves
towards a standardisation of the modelling procedures of the existing built environment, while also being easily
adaptable ex-novo modelling, by simply leaving out the initial integrated survey.
COoperativi Integrati [Enriched COoperative Systems]. Il corpus è dunque organizzato in dodici capitoli
raggruppati in tre parti principali.
passivi – cioè fotocamere montate su Aereomobili a Pilotaggio Remoto [APR].
Oppure possa
quantomeno rispecchiarla in modo impeccabile.
dovrebbe mai proporsi come verità assoluta. Anche il concetto di Structural Health Monitoring [SHM] è
relativamente recente.

sostenibile – Industria, innovazione e infrastrutture.
[a cura dell'Autore]XXXIV cicl
