This study analyses the unpublished correspondence of a Sicilian peasant family during the Great War, focusing on the functions of writing. In the The subject of letters and postcards in the World War I is critically discussed, in the first place. Second, the formal aspect of the texts is dealt with, addressing the schematic and formulaic structure by which the thematic repertoire of wartime episolography is developed. The functions of writing are then identified, according to three dimensions: performativity, the relationship between truth and deception, and the discursive reflection on learning to read and write. This study thus aims to highlight the complexity of this kind of popular writings as a crucial moment in the history of contemporary Italian
Provable Security: the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
2021 - 2022Since modern cryptography was born around the late 1970s, a myriad of cryptographic constructions and protocols have been proposed. The field quickly developed into a science whose results have had great im pact on people’s lives. Some examples are secure communication over the internet, distributed digital currencies, electronic elections, and more. Such a progress was boosted by the diffusion of a methodology called the provable security paradigm. It provides a precise framework to formalize and prove the security of a cryptographic construction. Provable security is based on three pillars: (i) definitions, (ii) assump tions, and (iii) proofs. The definition states when the system can be considered secure and what are the capabilities of an adversary attack ing the construction. The proof demonstrates that the construction satisfies the definition, assuming that all the assumptions hold. Prov able security provides objective ways to compare different construc tions, as well as more reassurances on their security. However, it is not devoid of pitfalls. For example, a definition might not model the real world correctly, and thus any proof that a construction satisfies such definition would be worthless in practice. Furthermore, it might happen that security proofs containing errors will not get detected because of the complexity (or oversimplification) of the proof itself. This thesis explores such multifaceted nature of provable security through two parts. In the first part, we focus on the recent devel opment of automatic contact tracing systems (ACTs). When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, automatic contact tracing was proposed as an effective way to slow the spread of the virus down by detecting likely infected people earlier with the help of technology. Citizens would use a smartphone app, and users at risk of being infected - as they were in proximity of an infected individual - would be notified by the smartphone. Due to the widespread adoption that was expected for ACTs, privacy and integrity were both key concerns. The DP3T team proposed an ACT [114] which was shortly after implemented and deployed over smartphones by Apple and Google with the name of GAEN. Informal security assessments were per formed by the DP3T team, including wrong or misleading claims about the privacy and integrity guarantees that ACTs could provide. Sev eral attacks to DP3T pointed out by other researchers were deemed as inherent by analyses that considered very powerful adversaries. How ever, the concrete attacks could have been carried out by much weaker adversaries to which other ACTs could have possibly resisted. We model these and novel integrity and privacy attacks with a focus on mass surveillance and analyze the security of DP3T w.r.t. them. We propose two new ACTs named Pronto-C2 and Pronto-B2, which encom pass DP3T/GAEN both in terms of privacy and integrity guarantees. Our ACTs also demonstrate that such attacks are not inherent. Fi nally, we consider the terrorist attack conjectured by Vaudenay [116]. It involves a malicious party (i.e., the terrorist) bribing infected users to inject false alerts in the ACT. We show how to concretely implement automated terrorist attacks to jeopardize the integrity of GAEN. In the second part of this thesis, we provide novel contributions in the area of threshold cryptography. In particular, we focus on proofs over threshold relations, threshold ring signatures, and extendable threshold ring signatures. We point out several fallacies in the usage of the provable security paradigm in prior works published at major cryptography conferences [5, 64]. Such issues include errors in the se curity proofs as well as inadequate definitions where the real-world system’s requirements and adversary’s capabilities are not matched by the definition. We overcome such issues proposing stronger defini tions, new constructions, and revisited security proofs. Additionally, our new constructions improve the previous ones in terms of efficiency, security, and/or features. [a cura dell'Autore]XXXV cicl
A Brief Editorial Note on Relations and Megadungeons in the Digital and Public Humanities
After four years of deep methodological reflections on our scholarly field, we are pleased to announce the publication of the first guest-edited issue of magazén, thus hopefully kickstarting a new trend in our Journal’s historical record. Furthermore, we are glad that this second issue of our 2023 volume embraces this year’s topic, centred on the concept of “Relations” as an intrinsic characteristic of Digital and Public Humanities, in a quite unexpected way. Guest-Editors Paolo Berti, Stefania De Vincentis and Gabriele de Seta indeed make their point in articulating the scholarly principle of relation-building in the Digital Humanities as seen from the perspective of megadoungeons
In this work we approach the play La patria fría
(2012) by the Argentineans Daniel Binetti and
Mariano Saba, the lyrics written by the Uruguayan Pedro Dalton for the rioplatense band
Chillan las bestias and the group album covers,
drawn by Dalton himself. Through the analysis we
observe how the grotesque materializes and acquires meaning, on the one hand from contradictory and dual images, and on the other, from the
presence of the grotesque body, which humanizes
and animalizes at the same time. We also take into
consideration the concept of bestiary, based on
the circulation of animals in these literary and visual texts. It is from these parameters that our
work is organized and acquires its ultimate meaning

Starting from what seemed to us to be one of the distinctive existential conditions of our time, with Heidegger definable as existential negativity, the essay attempts to discuss from a philosophical, critical and hermeneutical point of view the forms of this not in some novels of Italian literature (Moravia) and French (Sartre, Camus). This survey intends to offer an insight into some states of mind that can be traced back, with Benjamin, to the description of the creaturely condition and the ways of redemption that can open up. Melancholy, boredom, indifference, nausea, domesticity, extraneousness and accusation have therefore risen to representative traits, of which a brief analysis is therefore proposed
Is history science or art? The question of 19th century historians was resolved by Marc Bloch with the parallelism
of the cutter and the luthier. But can historiography influence cinematic art? Can the research work of James
Ford Rhodes, the Beard spouses, Frank Owsley influence the works of David Griffith, Buster Keaton, Michael
Curtiz and Quentin Tarantino? Through this journey through US historiography and cinematography, we want
to show how the cinematic representation of the Civil War was influenced by changes in historiographical paradigms and changes in society and the public use that cinema made of history

Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence from the Istanbul Convention to the EU Framework: The Proposal for an EU Directive
The main focus of this paper is on the path that is leading the EU legislator
to combat violence against women and domestic violence using different approaches.
Starting with the recent development that led the EU to ratify the Istanbul Convention
with the decisions approved on 1st June 2023, the author examines the recent proposal
for a directive on the topic, evaluating in particular its legal basis as proposed by the
European Commission (Article 82.2 and Article 83.1 TFEU), taking into account
Opinion 1/19 of the EU Court of Justice, and all the decisions that authorised
signature and ratification of the Istanbul Convention and the possible alternatives. In
this context, reference will be made to the provisions of the directive dealing with the
qualification of certain forms of violence against women (in particular the ones
connected to cybercrime) and to the risk of challenges by States that have not ratified
or are raising problems about the implementation of the Istanbul Convention, seeking
to assess the prospects for the future adoption of the proposed directive
