    Public History of Education. A brief Introduction

    This volume has an unusual structure that traces my experience as a lecturer and researcher chronologically: my first encounters with public history, mainly made up of North American literature, the first paper on these topics presented at an international conference of educational history scholars, the attempts to outline a theoretical and practical profile for public history in education, and, in tandem with all this, my own trials as a public historian, mainly within master’s and postgraduate university courses. As you can see, it is a biographical journey, a kind of ego-histoire, which I did not want to rework in an abstract way by removing the thread of memory, the various passages that have made the role that public history can play in education increasingly clear to me. I believed it was very useful to retain this chronological, sequential, personal and biographical order of my progressive awareness as my experiences and contacts with other interested colleagues (inside and outside the university) became more frequent. If others also recognise themselves in this path, or in some of its components, we can more easily collaborate, exchange ideas and comments, criticism and proposals for improvement. State ascoltando una puntata della quarta stagione del podcast di Storia dell’Arma dei Carabinieri. Ricordare la figura del Vice Brigadiere dei Carabinieri Reali Salvo D’Acquisto è sempre molto difficile. Ciò che egli fece in quel lontanissimo 23 settembre 1943 trascende i valori che l’Arma dei Carabinieri porta nel suo DNA sin dalla fondazione per assurgere ad un livello superiore. Dunque, ci è parso opportuno partire dal riconoscimento che l’Italia ha voluto concedere “alla memoria” di un Carabiniere ventitreenne: la Medaglia d’Oro al Valor Militare. Ecco la motivazione: Esempio luminoso d’altruismo, spinto fino alla suprema rinuncia della vita, sul luogo stesso del supplizio, dove, per barbara rappresaglia, era stato condotto dalle orde naziste insieme con 22 ostaggi civili del territorio della sua stazione, pure essi innocenti, non esitava a dichiararsi unico responsabile di un presunto attentato contro le forze armate tedesche. Affrontava così — da solo — impavido la morte, imponendosi al rispetto dei suoi stessi carnefici e scrivendo una nuova pagina indelebile di purissimo eroismo nella storia gloriosa dell’Arma. Torre di Palidoro (Roma), 23 settembre 1943 Suggerirei a chi ascolta questo episodio di provare a leggere la motivazione a voce alta, riascoltando la propria voce. Certamente si individua immediatamente il peso della retorica ma la motivazione, sfrondata da questa, appare potente. Dunque cosa successe nell’arco di meno di ventiquattr’ore tra la sera del 22 e quel terribile 23 settembre 1943 ce lo raccontano i testimoni e i documenti che gli studiosi hanno potuto analizzare. Ma vi lasciamo ascoltare l'episodio...     Spatio-temporal characterization And prediction of drought in Southern italy, case study: campania Region

    2020 - 2021Drought is a natural phenomenon that has widespread and significant effects on the global economy, environment, industries, and communities. early drought detection allows for the implementation, mitigation strategies and measures before its occurrence. Therefore, drought assessment is critical in the planning and management of water resource systems, particularly during dry climatic periods. However, assessing droughts is not always simple. This study described and evaluated drought conditions in Campania (southern Italy) using an in-situ measurement database that spans a centennial period from 1918 to 2019. With the assistance of these tools, water managers may more accurately assess droughts and prepare in advance for water management operations during droughts. Since water resource management in our area was crucial, the Campania region in southern Italy was selected as the case study region. To achieve the objectives of this study, an analysis of the precipitation coefficient of variation, assumed as index of inter-annual climate variability, was first performed over the period 1918-2015. Based on the findings of the above analysis and with the aim of reconstructing continuous long-term monthly scale precipitation time series, the in-situ point measurements (observed at the rain gauge locations) for the two datasets were projected on a 10×10 km resolution grid covering the whole region by using a geostatistical interpolation approach. Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) time series were reconstructed for different accumulation timescales (from 3 to 48 months) to explore the full range of drought types. The modified Mann–Kendall and Sen's tests were applied to identify SPI and SPEI changes over time. In addition, the impact of the vegetation stress to better understand causes of the drought phenomenon was evaluated. Drought characteristics (Duration, severity and peak) were furthermore investigated for both moderate (SPI/SPEI ≤ −1) and extremely severe conditions (SPI/SPEI ≤ −2). Spatial autocorrelation was used too, to evaluate whether the different events studied have similar characteristics in terms of spatial aggregation, i.e., if there are areas increasingly affected by drought and how they are affected. The same events in which drought was already assessed with the SPI and SPEI indices were taken into consideration, i.e., the events of 1962, 1989, 2003 and 2017. [edited by Author]XXXIV cicl

    Λ + c production vs the event charged-particle multiplicity in pp collisions at 13 TeV with ALICE at the LHC

    2020 - 2021The Quantum Chromo-Dynamics (QCD) theory predicts, in condition of very high temperature and/or energy density, a phase transition from the ordinary nuclear matter to a colour-deconfined medium called Quark–Gluon Plasma (QGP). The ALICE experiment was designed and optimized for the investigation of this hot and dense medium, produced via heavy-ion collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Due to the very short lifetime of the QGP, its properties cannot be directly revealed and its characterization is done through indirect signals, obtained from the observation of the ordinary particles that emerge from the interaction region. In particular, charm quarks are effective probes used for the investigation of QGP. Due to their large masses, they are produced in hard scattering processes on a timescale shorter than the QGP formation time and therefore experience the whole system evolution. The measurement of charm-baryon production, and in particular the baryon-to-meson ratios, provides unique information to characterize novel mechanisms of hadron formation beyond in-vacuum fragmentation, e.g. coalescence, which are expected to be significant in presence of a medium characterized by free colour charges. Measurements of charm-baryon production in pp collisions are essential to establish a baseline for p-A and A-A collisions. In addition, they provide critical tests of perturbative QCD (pQCD) calculations and models of charm hadronisation in hadronic collisions. The aim of the studies carried out in this thesis is the measurement of Λ + c charmed baryon yield, employed for the estimation of the baryon-to-meson ratio Λ + c /D0 . The first measurements of the Λ + c production yields and of the Λ + c /D0 baryon-to-meson ratios as a function of the charged-particle pseudorapidity density are presented. The study allows the characterization of the evolution of the Λ + c /D0 baryon-to-meson ratio from very low to high charged particle density and provides new experimental constraints on the production mechanisms in pp collisions. The analysed sample is collected in pp collisions at the energy in the centre-of-mass system of √ s = 13 TeV with the ALICE detector. The measurement is performed by reconstructing the hadronic decay channel Λ + c → pK0 s → pπ +π −, exploiting selections on its decay topology and on the particle identification (PID) of the decay products, extracting the signal via an invariant mass analysis and correcting for its selection and reconstruction efficiency and for the detector acceptance. A machine 1 learning algorithm based on Boosted Decision Trees (BDT) has been developed and is used in order to improve the signal extraction by optimally combining topological and PID variables that allow discriminating signal candidates from the combinatorial background. The results are compared with a theoretical model that explains the multiplicity dependence by a canonical treatment of quantum charges in the statistical hadronisation approach and with predictions from PYTHIA event generators that implement colour reconnection mechanisms beyond the leading colour approximation to model the hadronisation process.     The use of Artificial Intelligence for the Melanoma Binary Classification Problem on images (MIBCP)

    2021 - 2022The healthcare industry plays a critical role in saving lives ev ery day. As a result, researchers, physicians, and experts are constantly working to find new ways to address illnesses and dis abilities. In addition, technological advancements, especially in artificial intelligence and machine learning, have helped the sci entific community design and propose advanced diagnostic tools to help physicians make crucial patient care decisions. These tools allow researchers to analyze vast amounts of data in new ways, often in real-time, for various purposes, such as detect-ing patterns behind illnesses, analyzing signals and detecting potential cancer from images. In this context, this work was dedicated to the study of the Melanoma Image Binary Classification Problem (MIBCP), mainly by analyzing and proposing solutions to addressing the open issues in this field that did not allow a massive utilization of computer-aided diagnostic systems for early diagnosis. In partic ular, this work focuses on the resolution of the problems that may be behind high-performance automatic prediction models: the need to minimize risk situations, even by accepting lower overall performance; the opportunity to use clinical images instead of instrumental images in early diagnosis; the need able doctors to evaluate how the automatic prediction models learn and choose the results, rather than blindly relying only on the statistical values that can be calculated by analyzing the performance of the system on training, validation and test tests; the need for a scalable architecture specialized in allowing the refinement of prediction models in a fast and accessible way to non-experts. The results reported aim to help increase trust in the automatic system that can be implemented thanks to deep learning, in particular by showing these systems’ advantages, limitations and disadvantages and providing tools that show the potential to overcome these limitations. Also, this work aims to improve Melanoma early detection, which is now a limiting factor for f irst-line therapies in this tumour pathology. Di conseguenza, ricercatori, medici ed esperti lavorano costantemente per trovare nuovi modi per affrontare malattie e disabilità. Inoltre, i progressi tecnologici, in particola re nell’intelligenza artificiale e nell’apprendimento automatico, hanno aiutato la comunità scientifica a progettare e proporre strumenti diagnostici avanzati per aiutare i medici a prendere decisioni cruciali sulla cura del paziente. Questi strumenti con sentono ai ricercatori di analizzare grandi quantità di dati in modi nuovi, spesso in tempo reale, per vari scopi, come rilevare modelli dietro malattie, analizzare segnali e rilevare potenziali tumori dalle immagini. In questo contesto, questo lavoro è stato dedicato allo studio del Melanoma Image Binary Classification Problem (MIBCP), principalmente analizzando e proponendo soluzioni per affrontare le questioni aperte in questo campo che non hanno consentito un utilizzo massiccio di sistemi diagnostici assistiti da computer per la diagnosi precoce . In particolare, questo lavoro si concentra sulla risoluzione dei problemi che pos sono essere alla base di modelli di previsione automatica ad alte prestazioni: la necessità di minimizzare le situazioni di rischio, anche accettando prestazioni complessive inferiori; l’opportunità di utilizzare immagini cliniche invece di immagini strumentali nella diagnosi precoce; la necessità di medici in grado di valutare come i modelli di previsione automatica apprendono e scelgono i risultati, piuttosto che affidarsi ciecamente solo ai valori statistici che possono essere calcolati analizzando le prestazioni del siste ma su traning, validation e test set; la necessità di un’architettura scalabile specializzata nel consentire l’affinamento dei modelli di previsione in modo rapido e accessibile ai non esperti. I risultati riportati mirano ad aumentare la fiducia nel sistema automatico che può essere implementato grazie al deep learning, in parti colare mostrando vantaggi, limiti e svantaggi di questi sistemi e fornendo strumenti che mostrano il potenziale per superare questi limiti.     Copula link-based additive models for bivariate time-to-event Outcomes with general censoring scheme: Computational advances and variable ranking procedures

    2021 - 2022La presenza di esiti bivariati basati su dati di sopravvivenza è di enorme interesse nelle scienze applicate, dove l'oggetto di studio è l'occorrenza di due eventi. Tuttavia, l'utilità pratica dei bivariate copula survival model(s) è spesso ostacolata dalla presenza di dati influenzati da vari meccanismi di censura e da dataset ad alta dimensionalità. Questa tesi presenta una soluzione innovativa per affrontare queste due sfide. Nella prima sezione, proponiamo un approccio di regressione copula generale e flessibile in grado di gestire efficacemente dati di sopravvivenza bivariati, soggetti a vari meccanismi di censura. Questo approccio offre versatilità nella modellazione dell'associazione tra i due eventi di interesse. Nella seconda sezione, introduciamo una procedura di selezione delle variabili basata sulla classe di modelli presentata nella sezione precedente. Questa procedura rappresenta una novità assoluta nel panorama dei modelli di sopravvivenza bivariati basati sulle copule. Per valutare l'efficacia delle metodologie proposte, sono stati condotti ampi studi di simulazione. Inoltre, vengono discusse illustrazioni ed esempi utilizzando dati basati sull’ Age-Related Eye Disease Study. However, the practical utility of bivariate copula survival models is often hindered by the presence of data influenced by various censoring mechanisms and high-dimensional datasets. This thesis presents a novel solution to address these two challenges. In the first part, we propose a general and flexible copula regression approach capable of effectively handling bivariate survival data subject to various censoring mechanisms. This approach offers versatility in modelling the association between the two events of interest. In the second part, we introduce a variable selection procedure based on the class of models presented in the previous section. This procedure represents an absolute novelty in the panorama of bivariate copula survival models. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed methodologies, extensive simulation studies are conducted. Additionally, illustrated examples using data from the Age-Related Eye Disease Study are discussed. Lastly, the developed modelling frameworks are implemented in the R programming language, making them accessible to a wide range of users. [edited by Author]XXXV cicl

    Salerno, Testi e linguaggi (2021)According to Friedmar Apel «[...] Literary translation is a “form” that understands and gives substance to the experience of the original in another language». Of this “dialectical uniqueness”, in its form and content, the German scholar highlighted above all the relationship that, from time to time, was being established between the single work and a specific “horizon of reception”; and on whose perspective line the historical-cultural context, the language stage, the literary tradition and the dominant ‘poetics’ were placed. If compared to the experience of five poet-translators in contemporary Italian Literature (Mariano Bàino, Franco Buffoni, Roberto Deidier, Roberto Piumini, Eduardo Zuccato) the definition of Friedmar Apel’s “movement of language” seems to find a very authoritative model; forerunner in the idea of “poietic interlocking” formulated by Luciano Anceschi.     A pesar de lo mucho que la crítica ya escribió sobre la novela La casa verde, del peruano Mario Vargas Llosa, aún queda algo por decir, sobre todo con respecto a la dimensión mítica muy peculiar que el autor introduce en el libro. A menudo, los lectores de la novela destacan la ambientación selvática y la atmósfera mítica como los elementos más significativos de la narración y sugirieren una relación entre estos dos aspectos. Sin em-bargo, lo mítico se sitúa en otro contexto narrativo, es decir, en el contexto urbano de Piura. Las coordenadas geográficas de la legendaria Casa Verde y los recursos narrativos utilizados por el autor dan lugar a un mito de creación muy alejado del contexto selváti-co y, por el contrario, narran el origen de la ciudad latinoamericana bajo el influjo de la civilización del espectáculoIn the last fifty years critics have written a large number of essays about the novel La Casa Verde by Peruvian author Mario Vargas Llosa, but there is still something to be said, es-pecially concerning the very peculiar mythical dimension that the author introduces into the book. The myth of the Green House is usually associated with the jungle, due to the most popular exotic perspective that readers acquire in regard to this element.     Il principio del contraddittorio nel procedimento amministrativo

    La presente ricerca affronta il delicato problema della portata e del campo di applicazione del principio del contraddittorio nel procedimento amministrativo, con particolare riferimento all’istituto del cd. preavviso di rigetto (art. 10-bis legge 7 Agosto 1990 n. 241 s.m.i) nel rapporto dialettico con la categoria dogmatica e giurisprudenziale della cd. inesauribilità del potere amministrativo. Vista la complessità del tema, il lavoro prende le mosse dall’esame del regime del principio del contraddittorio nell’ordinamento giuridico multilivello e negli stati europei di civil law della Francia, Spagna e Germania. Segue l’illustrazione della natura giuridica e funzione del procedimento amministrativo, presupposto necessario per l’inquadramento al suo interno del cd. diritto al contraddittorio; distinguendosi tra diritto sostanziale o di base e diritto/interesse procedimentale, ed esaminando accuratamente le varie posizioni della dottrina. Viene illustrato anche il presupposto di tale esercizio (obbligo di comunicazione dell’avvio del procedimento), e i contenuti essenziali di questo diritto, nonché i vizi di legittimità e di merito derivanti dalla lesione del diritto del contraddittorio e più in generale del diritto di difesa. Poi, si affronta il grave problema del rapporto tra lo speciale istituto del preavviso di rigetto e la concezione della cd. inesauribilità del potere amministrativo. Ad avviso della scrivente, la difesa del principio del giusto procedimento, è un valore irrinunciabile; tanto più, che la dottrina ritiene che il procedimento debba costituire il luogo degli assetti definitivi del procedimento stesso (cd. “one shot secco”); anche se la giurisprudenza, al momento, è orientata verso la possibilità di riedizione del potere amministrativo con temperamenti (cd.“one shot temperato”)This research deals with the thorny situation related to the application of the contradictory principle in the administrative lawsuit, particularly focusing on the so-called rejection notice (art. 10 bis, 07/08/1990 n. 241 and further modifications) in the dialectic correlation with the dogmatic and case-law inexhaustibility of the administrative power. Because of the complexity of the topic, this work begins with the examination of its regime in various contexts: both in the multi-layered legal system and in different European states like France, Spain and Germany, which follow the civil law. Subsequently there is an illustration of the juridical nature and of its function in the administrative proceedings, a fundamental aspect in order to settling it in correctly in the context of the so-called contradictory law; it is distinguished into substantial (or basic) law and in procedural law; The different interpretations of the doctrine are accurately analyzed. It is also explained the assumption of its use (the obligation of communicating the beginning of the procedure), and the essential contents of this law, but also the mistakes resulting from the incorrect use of this law or, more generally, of the defensive law. Afterwards, the serious issue of the connection between the rejection notice and the conception of the so-called inexhaustibility of the administrative power is handled. Following the writer’s opinion, the defense of the principle of the right procedure is an unavoidable value; even more if the doctrine considers that the legal action has to establish the locus of the definitive layouts of the actual procedure (so-called “curt one shot”); even though the jurisprudence is nowadays contemplating the opportunity of reviewing the administrative power with some corrections (so-called “tempered one shot”.
