‘Welcome to the Anthropocene’ Public Environmental History
The geological concept ‘the Anthropocene’ circulates widely outside Earth System Science – in museum communities, public culture, social sciences, and amongst social science and humanities scholars, artists, activists and public historians too. It is an evident idea for public historians today working with environmental history to engage with a concept that successfully and popularly bridges academic and public interests. This article discusses the concept of the Anthropocene within public environmental history’s historiography and brings in Dipesh Chakrabarty’s influential discussions from the academic field of history and theory about the non-synchronous temporalities geological time and historical time. The article categorizes public environmental history’s methodological approaches since the field emerged in the 1990s, revealing the important concepts being landscapes, human-nature interactions, climate change, sustainability and the Anthropocene. It concludes that the Anthropocene is a concept that can further develop public environmental history but that it also a paradox to the field potentially affecting a core idea in public history – relationships to publics. This has to do with temporal implications of the concept: it squeezes the temporality of memory important to public history and humans out of view; it imposes an extremely slow and long chronological time that is unfamiliar if not foreign to ordinary people to perceive of; it carries with it the idea about a future without humans and other species of today
Intervista a Eva Meran LA CASA DELLA STORIA AUSTRIACA COME FORUM
The paper aims to study the small museums of the Alpine School as sites
for building a local history of the school, shared with the population through the creation
of exhibitions, the reconstruction of the biographies of historical teachers of the country,
the collection of oral sources on the school experiences of the inhabitants, campaigns to
collect photographs or school supplies to be displayed more or less temporarily in exhibition cases, etc. The research, therefore, focuses in particular on public history initiatives
– that is to say, on “bottom-up” participatory history, with the contribution of non-professional historians – promoted within museums located on two distinct sides of the Alps:
the Trentino and Alto Adige, on one side, and the Piedmont, on the other. These “places
of school memory” are not simple exhibition spaces, but local identity elaboration spaces,
able to aggregate around themselves real “communities of memory” and to contribute
significantly to the social and cultural resilience of communities in areas at high risk of
depopulation. The people who visit these museums are not only visitors, mere spectators
of a representation of their school past, but rather co-authors of a great collective narrative, shared with the other members of their own community
The contribution aims at highlighting how oral history and educative
memories can be analysed in order to explore changes in teachers’ mentality in Italy between 1970s and nowadays. Public History of Education and its methodologies are going
to give an important stimulus in order to reach the task. The database “Memorie scolastiche in video” (Scholastic video memories) set up by the University of Florence between
2020 and 2022, is going to be considered as the main source for this research. Teachers’ memories prove that some scholastic reforms, as the Mattarella Law in 1990 or the
Gelmini Law in 2009, are perceived by people interviewed as benchmarks. Furthermore,
interviews evidence changes in how “older” and “younger” teachers’ generation look at
their job and its relationship with self-perception and private lives
This contribution aims to highlight the activities currently being prepared
at the Comprehensive Institute “G. Fortunato” of Picerno (Pz) in relation to the conservation and valorisation of its historical-educational heritage. In this regard, a collective
book is being prepared, created by the teachers, and a first mapping of the documentation
present in the school’s historical archive has been carried out. This material will also be
the basis for the creation of a school museum. Again from this perspective, and through
Public History, a project was created in the 2022-23 school year where students retraced
some important historical phases in the history of their municipality
L’Accademia dopo Morrocchesi.
This is the first part of an essay on the teaching of
declamation at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence, in the years following Antonio Morrocchesi's
death. The undisputed protagonist of this new chapter in the history of the Florentine fine art academy
was the philodramatist and playwright Filippo Berti.
In this part of my research, is presented a biographical profile of him and is examined the first two years
of his tenure at the Academy, as an assistant to maestro Ferdinando Ceccherini. In the second part (it will
be published in one of the next issues of this journal),
there is an analysis of his subsequent teaching activity, marked by the creation of the Ginnasio Drammatico and the attempt to graft into public education an unprecedented model of private participation
Spazio pubblico e memorie nelle pratiche della Public History
The paper first discusses the hermeneutics of Public History (PH) as
a discipline that responds to the needs of the present, describing its participatory
methods and interaction with society and its various communities. It then considers
the relationship of PH to memory and the creation of collective identities, as opposed
to the political use of history and memory. It also examines examples of participatory
PH projects, some of which are linked to the complex construction of collective
memory in Italy on the 150th anniversary of unification and in Europe after 1989.
Finally, it will be shown how international PH favors the creation of new memorial
archives that respond to the immediate needs of communities (rapid response
archives) after traumatic event
“Ma nemmeno la Duse!” Una storia di tradizione
In questa testimonianza si ripercorre parte della
vita dell’attore Giovanni Battista Diotaiuti (1926-
In this testimony, is traced a part of the life of the

His human and artistic journey has been marked
by encounters with prominent figures in Italian
theater of the 20th century. As a student of
Tofano, D’Amico, and Strasberg, who themselves
were witnesses and friends of Eleonora Duse, Diotaiuti taught acting for almost sixty years: from
1963 to 2019. His is a pivotal figure bridging the
gap between the teachings of the Divina and today’s actors and actresses
In his Discorso sulla poesia (1953), Salvatore Quasimodo wrote: «One day we will make a poetic map of
the South; and it doesn't matter if it will touch
Magna Graecia again, her sky above the imperturbable images of innocence and blinding senses. Perhaps the permanence of poetry is being born there».
This paper is inspired precisely by this intuition of
Quasimodo to retrace a crucial period of the Italian
literature of the twentieth century, in which for the
first time, among southern authors, there was a new
awareness of both expression and identity, which
would lead them to represent a vast a territory that
had until then been practically excluded from official
poetic cartographies, introducing new expressive instances into the literary debate
