    Public History as Graphic History

    No full text
Graphic History – the telling, teaching and understanding of history through comics – has been growing in classrooms and university spaces for more than two decades. However, in the discipline of history the engagement with comics is still rare. The articles in this special section of International Public History all focus on multiple facets of graphic history in public history, ranging from research to applications in classrooms, libraries, museums, archives, and cultural institutions. We are focused on the growth and potential for historical pedagogy and didactics to embrace a framework of critical visual inquiry – elevating analysis of images to a status equal to written text. With ever increasing discussions of misinformation and a need for critical analysis in historical pedagogy, didactics, and historical thinking, we see great potential for Graphic History with its rich legacy of visual narrative and exceptional popular success and appeal to add to Public History. This special section hopes to serve as an inspiration and a call to action, to encourage public historians, and historians in general, to think more critically about their historical pedagogy, research, and teaching. What are we including and what are we leaving out

    Appunti per un’Antigone in Amazzonia

    Get PDF
Over the last two decades, Milo Rau traveled around the world, working to denounce crimes and genocides through his works. He focused “on the multimedia treatment of historical and socio-political conflicts” through Greek tragedies as well. This essay examines in particular Antigone in the Amazon, a production where ancient myth meets modern-day activism. In collaboration with Brazilian and European actors, musicians, indigenous activists, Rau retells Sofocles’ tragedy through the story of MST, a Brazilian workers’ movement fighting against destruction of the Amazon rainforest. Through the usage and intermingling of filmed passages and live sequences, real events of Brazilian History are reenacted and find a new (“real”) life on stage

    Get PDF
In this paper we review the image of Sicily in the poetry of Salvatore Quasimodo. The first stage consists of the famous Vento a Tindari, included in Ac que e terre (1930), where the island that suddenly appears in the poet's memory becomes a sort of Eden that contrasts with the unhappiness of the present. After having followed the theme of Sicily throughout Quasimodo's production, we reach the last collection, Dare e avere (1966), where Nell'isola appears which represents in a certain sense the conclusion of the poet's reflection on millenary history of Sicily and at the same time on his personal existential story, always inextricably intertwined with his land of origin

New pathways to trafficking victims’ protection? Intersection and synergies between the European Pact on Migration and Asylum and directive (EU) 2024/1712 for third-country national victims

    No full text
Victims of trafficking find themselves in an extraordinarily vulnerable position, having suffered severe violations of their human dignity and personal freedoms. This vulnerability is further intensified for those victims who are in an irregular situation within the European Union, as it complicates their ability to seek protection and support. Consequently, this paper offers a critical analysis of the legislative advancements introduced by instruments stemming from the European Pact on Migration and Asylum, as well as Directive (EU) 2024/1712, which amends Directive 2011/36/EU concerning the anti-trafficking framework in the European Union. The study aims to clarify the interactions and synergies between the trafficking and asylum systems, emphasizing both the – minimum – progress achieved and the persistent challenges in ensuring adequate protection for trafficking victims

The essay is focused on Quasimodo’s post second world war poetic production in which the usual Mediterranean landscapes are first replaced by urban spaces tragically violated by the war and then by those peculiar to so many other places observed during the author’s increasingly recurrent trips abroad until the composition of a couple of poems with a hospital setting that seem to prelude, even in their existential implications, the crossing of an extreme limit

    Get PDF
The article examines the crucial role played by artists in the antiquarian investigations of the seventeenth century, highlighting how their works significantly influenced the perception and docu mentation of ancient civilizations. The research delves into the concept of the “Greek manner” and the importance of the representational method of artists such as François Duquesnoy and Nicolas Poussin, who were active in Rome during that period. It underscores the relevance of reproducing the ancient as a methodological tool, foreshadowing the development of modern archaeological discipline. The pioneering work of Cassiano dal Pozzo is highlighted for having introduced an approach that combines scientific rigor and artistic sensitivity, laying the foundation for future investigations and stylistic studies

Carlo Bo legge l’uomo, e poeta, Salvatore Quasimodo

In January 1937, Carlo Bo is preparing a long essay about Quasimodo: as he writes in a letter to Carlo Betocchi, it is the first essay of a short series about the Italian poets. This essay, Condizione di Quasimodo, will be published in «Convivium» in 1937 and it will complete Bo’s Otto studi in 1939, just after two pieces of writing about Ungaretti and Montale. It is precisely Bo’s first critical contribution on Quasimodo, «a man with a few eternal feelings» and a poet by «an unwavering vocation». From 1937 to 1987 Bo will write some different reviews, prefaces and analysis sketching the historical and literary outline of that period, always including the leading figure of Quasimodo in it. These texts will keep on looking deep into Quasimodo’s poetical work, his relationship with the past and next generations of poets, his relevance for Italian and European poetry up to the 1959 Nobel Prize for Literature. Despite the controversies carried on by many other literary critics, Bo cleverly faces Quasimodo’s connection with Hermeticism, his crucial turning point in the Forties (towards a more realistic style) and his work as a translator. If dealing with Quasimodo means almost as looking into ourselves, Bo assures us that this poet is definitely one of the most worthy of the XXth century: we should continue reading him. He is an important man of his time: even today, Quasimodo could, and should, call on us to reflect on being humans besides being poets (or critics)

    Get PDF
Traditionally, archives have had the preservation of historical documentation as their main objective, but the so-called “boom” in public history –which has been developing for several decades– seems to have begun to influence the logic in which the archives understand their own role. In consequence, some of these institutions begin to value their collections from a patrimonial and didactic perspective, fostering actions to make these collections more visible and offer them to wider audiences. In certain cases, these initiatives are linked to public history practices, when archives become promoters of dialogue and cooperation between academics, local communities, and audiences. In this paper, we will present one of these cases: a collaborative experience with General Archive of the Consell of Mallorca, based on the principle of shared authority. The result has been an exhibition, an illustrated publication, several dissemination conferences and didactic activities, and a crowdsourcing project which we are currently developing

    Get PDF
The Author focuses attention on the enormous contribution offered to the theme of the musicpoetry relationship by Saverio Mattei, musicologist, scholar, passionate lover of the ancients, translator of biblical psalms into Metastasian arias, who worked intensely in Naples in the second half of the eighteenth century , earning controversy and acclaim with his writings, and maintaining relationships with the most prominent figures in the eighteenth century musical and theatrical world. In the intervention the author quickly retraces the long path of reflection which, starting from the first writings on the poetry of the Jews and the Greeks, found its definitive destination in the dissertation on the Philosophy of Music, published in 1773 which can be considered the highest moment and completed his theoretical reflection. The Dissertation was published in 1773, and included, not surprisingly, in volume V of the Poetic Books of the Bible: it was the indication of his intent to develop a theory, directly functional to his translation work. Mattei, a profound expert of the Jewish language and world, decided to adopt the style and meter of Anacreon in the translation of the psalms, discarding all those closed-system metric forms which did not correspond to the musical nature of ancient poetry, well convinced that only by adapting the poetic verse to the musical meter, making it 'singable', the primary aim would have been achieved, the elevation of the Spirit. The intent was to restore the true spirit of Davidic poetry, which resided, precisely, in the ability to educate by 'alluring', thus reaching the hearts and souls of everyone. The scholar underlines the strong ethical imprint that characterizes her 'system' of translation, founded on the need to restore the original values of ancient music, recovering that happy synthesis of poetry and music, of inspiration and moral rectitude, capable of making poetry useful and instructive and the music 'philosophical'. In reality, Mattei, through his singular work of translation, clearly exemplifies the existence of that problematic relationship between the modern and the ancient which runs through so much of our late eighteenth century
