Cultural Relations in Schools: Evolving Practice in a Globalised World
No full textThis study provides an overview of the added value of working internationally with schools through a cultural relations approach. It begins by providing a definition and situating education programming within the broader landscape of cultural relations. The paper then provides an overview of how various cultural institutions conceptualise and integrate cultural relations through schools in their programming. Finally, it analyses the case of the British Council in more depth, providing evidence from its overall programming aims, and from implementation in seven partner countries.
The literature on the value of international education partnerships has, to date, focused largely on cultural diplomacy, soft power and higher education initiatives. This research adds to the current evidence base by focusing on interventions at the primary and secondary level, and by providing a definition of cultural relations through schools that reflects its unique characteristics compared to other similar but distinct approaches. This study defines cultural relations through schools as:‘mutually beneficial partnerships and activities between education systems, meeting today’s learning needs to address tomorrow’s global challenges’
Next Generation: What We Know on Women and Girls
Get PDFThis report and accompanying briefs present what we know about women and girls across three main areas: education and skills, ending violence against women and girls, and socioeconomic and political empowerment. The focus is on seven Next Generation countries: Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Viet Nam, Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Poland.
The report applies a socio-ecological lens to identify the factors that enable or hinder progress for women and girls within and across the three areas. It also incorporates the principles of gender equality and social inclusion (GESI) to research design and delivery across the various country contexts. It re-analyses seven Next Generation datasets to the extent possible based on age (15-24 and 25-35), sex (women and men), and location (rural and urban). Insights are also drawn from qualitative interview data collected in 2023

Get PDFThis study addresses the lack of knowledge, data and awareness of the challenges of artistic freedom worldwide and explores the current status of systems which monitor and document violations of artistic freedom. By interviewing key actors in the landscape of artistic freedom and analysing available reports, this study portrays how donors, international organisations and civil society organisations (CSOs) understand the current challenges they face. It identifies gaps in the promotion and protection of artistic freedom, including what is needed to address them, and points to a number of positive developments as well as negative trends. The study explores the dependency of CSOs on funding and how donors, policymakers and UN bodies are, in turn, dependent on and benefit from information provided by CSOs as well as the fragility of this interdependency

No full textRadikalisierung, gewaltbereiter Extremismus und transnationale Netzwerke extremistischer Organisationen, unterstützt durch die Reichweite sozialer Medien, ziehen zunehmend Menschen in ihren Bann. Präventive Maßnahmen können die Resilienz gefährdeter Personen gegenüber Radikalisierung und der Anziehungskraft gewalttätiger extremistischer Gruppen und ihrem Gedankengut erhöhen. Oft ermöglichen sie sogar radikalisierte Personen in ihre jeweiligen Gesellschaften zu reintegrieren. In dieser Studie werden ausgewählte Projekte der Extremismusprävention unter Berücksichtigung der regionalen politisch-kulturellen Lage sowie unter ideologiespezifischer Aspekte für schwer erreichbare Zielgruppen in den folgenden Regionen und Ländern untersucht: Sahel, Afghanistan, den Flüchtlingscamps Al-Haul und Roj in Syrien, Ägypten und Tunesien. Hinzu kommt ein interregionales Projekt in der MENA-Region. Daraus abgeleitet werden Empfehlungen für künftige Maßnahmen der Auswärtigen Kultur- und Bildungspolitik
