Fairness perceptions of AI use by tax administration

    No full text
We tested whether the proportion of AI versus auditors in fraud selection matters for fairness, and whether there is an impact of transparency (explanations). We found that a higher proportion of AI was more procedurally fair, mostly through bias suppression and consistency, and that the attitude toward AI and trust in the administration explained most variance. Transparency (explanations) had no impact. We also found two small negative interaction effects concerning trust and procedural fairness: with high trust in the tax administration, fairness increased less (as AI increased). Conversely, with low trust, fairness increased more (as AI increased). Dataset 1 was used for the pilot (with students and professionals) Dataset 2 was a representative dataset for the Flemish population

The Democratic Innovations and Scale Database

    No full text
The objective of the present database is to provide an exhaustive as possible list of direct and deliberative democratic innovations worldwide, of their core contextual and institutional features and, most importantly, of the population size of the political entity in which they have been implemented. Studying the impact of political entities’ population size on the functioning of democratic innovations is the main interest of the ‘Democratic Innovations and Scale’ research project that this database is part of. To establish the database, I drew on the most exhaustive existing databases on direct as well as on deliberative democratic innovations to date (as cited in the method, acknowledgements and citation section of the sheet). After merging databases and eliminating duplicates, I filtered the cases that were in line with the selection criteria of my own research (see criteria specified in the method, acknowledgements and citation section of the sheet). Excluded cases are documented in a separate sheet. For the final list of retained cases, the population size of the political entity in which they were conducted was collected based on World Bank, Database Earth or national census data. No full text
The dataset contains individual-level information on all 5850 eligible voters (male, older than 25, paying a minimum of tax) in the city of Antwerp in 1871. It lists every voter's name, address, birthplace, date of birth, and the amounts of land tax, sales tax, liquor tax, patent tax, or personal tax paid in the preceding year. It was transcribed entirely from the source "Stad Antwerpen Lijst der Kiezers voor de samenstelling der Kamers, Provincie en Gemeente, 1871 / Ville d'Anvers Liste des Electeurs pour la formation des Chambres, de la Province et de la Commune, 1871." Retrievable at the Antwerp Felix Archive: https://felixarchief.antwerpen.be/archievenoverzicht/260964. This dataset offers researchers a unique opportunity to study socio-economic inequality between Antwerp's elites or across geographical space. Alternatively, it can provide additional information about Antwerp residents encountered in other sources

    No full text
